•An improved policy gradient method of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) for Combined Heat and Power (CHP) dispatch problem is proposed in this paper.•The constrained CHP dispatch problem is modeled as Markov Decision Process (MDP).•Mathematical experiment of the proposed approach was compared with conventional mathematical optimization method.
