Experimental demonstration of fully passive quantum key distribution

Passive scheme is a highly desirable countermeasure against the side-channels of the active-modulation in quantum key distributions (QKD) because it allows the users to remove their active modulators. However, the active modulation have never been completely removed from QKDs due to the difficulty in theory and technique. In this work, we developed a fully-passive time-bin QKD system based on the latest theoretical achievements and our passive time-bin scheme. We also experimentally demonstrated the fully-passive scheme without any active modulation to verify the feasibility and security of the fully passive QKD. This work would be a beneficial exploration for promoting the practical application of QKDs.
