•Cervical screening has not controlled cervical adenocarcinoma.•We looked for early markers of adenocarcinoma that might be useful for early detection of adenocarcinoma precursors.•The combination of HPV 16/18/45 and cytologic AGC predicts high risk of adenocarcinoma and adenocarcinoma in situ.
