A Millimeter-Wave Wideband Miniaturized Metasurface Antenna Using Capacitive Loadings

In this work, a millimeter-wave wideband miniaturized metasurface (MS) antenna is firstly proposed for fifth-generation (5G) millimeter-wave applications. The proposed MS structure is constructed by loading several stacked patches underneath the conventional MS structure, where additional capacitances can be introduced. Accordingly, the resonance frequency can be decreased, and then the size can be miniaturized effectively. For demonstration, a millimeter-wave antenna is constructed by combining the proposed capacitive-loaded MS structure with a slot-coupled feeding structure. Simulations demonstrate that the constructed antenna can exhibit a wideband feature within a much compact aperture size of 0.28λ 0 ×0.28λ 0 ×0.09λ 0 , covering approximately 22% of the operating frequency range between 24.08~29.93 GHz. This design method offers a feasible solution for realizing compact wideband MS antennas for broadband wireless communication systems.
