Herein, a selective, one‐pot synthetic route to reactive benzyl‐ and allyl‐halide‐substituted naphthalenes and dihydronaphthalenes from easily accessible 2,3‐aryl‐1,3‐butadiene substrates and simple halogenated alkanes, using [Cp*RuCl(PPh 3 ) 2 ] as the catalyst, is reported. The reaction is tolerant to various functional groups, including reactive carbonyl groups, halides, and trimethylsilyl groups. The scope of catalytic reactions can be expanded to otherwise difficult to synthesize substituted and reactive dihydronaphthalene and benzo[ b ]thiophene products. The resulting benzyl‐ and allyl‐halide‐substituted (dihydro‐)naphthalene products are relevant synthons for drug synthesis, allowing for facile post‐functionalization by making use of the reactive halide functionalities. Mechanistic studies are combined with density functional theory (DFT), which revealed a sequential catalytic atom transfer radical addition, radical benzannulation, and HCl elimination sequence. It is particularly noteworthy that the key transition state proceeds via a 6‐ endo‐trig cyclization, in contrast to the classical 5‐ exo ‐trig cyclization as is normally observed for intramolecular radical additions. This cyclized intermediate subsequently undergoes HCl elimination to generate benzyl‐ and allyl‐halide substituted (dihydro‐)naphthalenes.
Higher Education Institutions are increasingly facing challenges in designing courses that enable students to develop the transdisciplinary knowledge, skills and understanding needed to engage with complex 'wicked' problems. This article reports on a conceptual framework for STEAM in Higher Education (HE), in which design thinking is interwoven with four key features of creative pedagogies: transdisciplinarity, embodied dialogue, empowerment and agency, and ethics and trusteeship. The study explores: how does the design thinking-creative pedagogies framework manifest for participants in practice? The framework was used in four international HE short courses entwining sciences, arts and entrepreneurship to facilitate participants' responses to a different 'wicked problem' in each country, based on the local context. The framework was analysed across the courses to explore how it operates in practice through iterative developments, to help educators understand how to develop it further. The study used a mixed-method, participatory research design, with 82 participants in total. This paper highlights the key creative pedagogy features and design thinking approach working together in productive patterns, helping teachers and partners establish new learning strategies and offering insight into how transdisciplinary learning around complex problems can be facilitated in STEAM Higher Education.
This study investigates how integrating lingua-didactic principles into the credit-module system can enhance English language learning in higher education. As universities shift toward more student-centered and flexible academic models, there is a growing need for teaching strategies that promote autonomous learning, communicative competence, and overall academic achievement. The research focuses on the application of lingua-didactic methods such as blended learning, task-based instruction, and digital integration and examines how these approaches align with the structure of modular education. A mixed-methods approach was used, including a survey of 120 students and in-depth interviews with 20 English language instructors. The findings reveal that incorporating lingua-didactic strategies leads to improved learner engagement, stronger vocabulary development, and increased confidence in language use. Based on the results, the study recommends institutionalizing lingua-didactic training for educators and expanding access to digital instructional tools within modular frameworks.
