The Ateneo de Naga University (Central Bikol: Ateneo de Naga na Unibersidad / Filipino: Pamantasang Ateneo de Naga), also referred to by its acronym AdNU, is a private Catholic Jesuit basic and higher education institution run by the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus in Naga City, Camarines Sur, Philippines. It was established in 1940 when the Jesuits took over the administration of the diocesan school, Camarines Sur Catholic Academy. The Jesuits renamed the school Ateneo de Naga after taking control. The Jesuits were naming all the schools that they were opening at that time Ateneo. Ateneo de Naga was the fourth school named Ateneo by the Jesuits. Typical of universities in the Philippines, AdNU has primary (since 2014) and secondary departments, which are both coeducational.
This instrument aimed to develop the Filipino Social-Emotional Learning (FSEL) Scale as a culturally relevant SEL tool to measure the unique social-emotional dynamics of Filipino students from Grade 7 to college. With a 100-item self-report inventory using a 5-point Likert scale, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was utilized to randomly split the subsample, followed by Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). This reduced the initial 100-item to 67 items. The sampling adequacy measure (KMO = 0.945) and Bartlett’s test of sphericity resulted at X² = 5322.1, df = 2346, p <0.001 confirmed the appropriateness of extraction and revealed six factors, accounting 76.41% of the variance. The FSEL Scale showed an excellent internal consistency and reliability with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.985. Each factor also has high reliability: Pakikipagkapwa (α = 0.987), Kamalayan sa Sarili (α = 0.984), Kasipagan (α = 0.975), Pagkamakatao (α = 0.961), Pagmamalasakit (α = 0.916), and Pakikiramdam (α = 0.958). Fit indices indicated that the FSEL Scale showed an acceptable model fit (X² (5694, N=376) = 13, 271, p < 0.001, X²/df =2.33, CFI = .91, TLI = .90, RMSEA = .08, and SRMR = .03) which implied that the proposed factor structure is supported by the data. Minor model refinement may still improve the fit. More so, during the Pilot testing, the FSEL’s convergent validity showed a statistically significant positive correlation with Panorama SEL, a widely used SEL assessment tool (r = 0.752, p <0.001) which implied that the locally developed FSEL scale accurately measured the same construct. The FSEL Scale’s psychometric properties affirmed its potential as an effective instrument in assessing SEL.
Kristian Cordero’s translation of Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis instantiates what the philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari call minor literature. Preferring the Bikol term Pagkagimata—the literal event of Gregor Sama’s becoming-animal in the novel as title of the translation and the utilization of the Rinconada Bikol language for the transformed Samsa—Cordero has typified a perspective of translation that challenges the popular view of fluent translation from the source text to the target language. Exemplifying the concept of becoming-minor of Deleuze and Guattari and deploying Lawrence Venuti’s notion of the “remainder,” An Pagkagimata ni Gregor Samsa exhibits a deterritorialization of Bikol language and reveals what translation is in practice—an ideology and utopia. With this Deluezio-Guattarian perspective of Cordero’s translation an alternative way of framing questions surrounding identity, particularly of Bikolness, is proffered that is, as an invention for a people-to-come.
Access to necessary resources is sometimes limited for college students in rural areas. With these limitations, this study focussed on self-adjustment, factors related to academic persistence, health-promoting behaviours, satisfaction with life, and external social support as predictors of the flourishing of college students in rural areas. Specifically, flourishing is operationally defined in this study as the promotion of social and psychological well-being (Diener, 2010). There were 217 college students enrolled in rural-based schools in the Philippines as respondents in the study. The multiple regression analysis results showed that academic buoyancy, academic self-efficacy, regularly eating breakfast, social support from friends, and life satisfaction significantly predicted the flourishing of college students. The discussion delved into the far-reaching implications of preventive and responsive student support services programmes.
The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges to the educational system, particularly in assessing student resilience and academic performance. This study examined the relationship between academic resilience and academic performance among college students during the pandemic using a quantitative, descriptive correlational design. Data from 560 students were analyzed through correlation and multiple linear regression. The findings revealed that most participants (371 or 66.3%) exhibited high levels of academic resilience, and a majority (57.0%, or 319 students) achieved a General Weighted Average (GWA) in the 91-95 range, indicating strong academic performance. Results demonstrated a significant positive correlation between resilience and academic performance. The study identified Positive Coping and Regulation of Academics (PCRA), which refers to students' constructive coping mechanisms and self-management in academic tasks, and Negative Perception in Coping with Academics (NPCA), defined as students' negative beliefs or ineffective coping with academic challenges, as key predictors. Although these predictors accounted for only 5.1% of the variance, the findings highlight the importance of resilience factors in academic performance and suggest that additional variables, such as cognitive ability, socio-economic status, and study habits, require further investigation. The study underscores the necessity for educational institutions to implement interventions that foster positive coping strategies and address negative perceptions among students. Further research is recommended to examine mediating factors and develop targeted interventions to enhance student resilience and academic outcomes.
