This study investigates the relationship between Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) strategies and Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety (FLSA) among Algerian EFL undergraduates using a quantitative correlational approach based on Bandura's theory of self-efficacy and Tobias' Input Processing Output (IPO) model. With a sample of 213 first-year students from three universities in Algeria, this study investigates the predictive role of self-ratings of speaking ability in SRL utilization and the variation in anxiety between high and low SRL users. Findings show that there is a strong negative correlation between use of SRL strategies and FLSA and that metacognitive and affective strategies have the most potent effect in alleviating anxiety. Self-perceived competence was a highly significant predictor of SRL use, emphasizing the centrality of beliefs to strategic action. Additionally, more frequent users of SRL reported significantly reduced levels of speaking anxiety, once again confirming SRL's relatively cognitively- and affect-control functions. The findings emphasize including SRL training in EFL speaking instruction in support of learner autonomy, lessened anxiety, and communicative performance that is more effective. Instructional and curriculum design issues are addressed, with suggestions for context-conditioned, strategy-oriented interventions.
