Brewster Place is an American drama series which aired on ABC in May 1990. The series was a spinoff of the 1989 miniseries The Women of Brewster Place, which was based upon Gloria Naylor's novel of the same name. The series starred talk show host Oprah Winfrey, who also served as co-executive producer.
Introduction: The consequences of increased morbidity and increased socioeconomic strain, for stroke survivors and their families, is well documented in stroke literature worldwide. Variables that determine readmission rates of stroke survivors may be complicated by the intersection of social determinants of health (SDOH). SDOH include race/ethnicity, insecurities, living conditions, social isolation, health literacy, income and education. This single center, prospective, observational study explores SDOH that lead to higher risk of readmission (within 30-days to 30-90 days) after discharge from the hospital once diagnosed with stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). Methods: A questionnaire was distributed to 100 patients admitted with acute stroke or TIA per the study inclusion criteria. Additional variables of interest collected included race, ethnicity, income, insurance status, treatment, baseline and discharge National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score and modified Rankin scale (mRS) score, comorbidities, zip code and discharge disposition. Results: Univariate analysis found prior stroke/TIA and baseline mRS score of 0-2 to be statistically significant at predicting readmission within 30-days, p=0.07 and p=0.01, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed patients who find it difficult to eat healthy and participate in activities to improve their health, have history of prior TIA/stroke, coronary artery disease, diabetes and baseline mRS score were highly predictive for readmission. Discussion: SDOH are thought to contribute to readmission rates for patients who experienced stroke or TIA. In conclusion, our preliminary study found that patients who admitted to difficulties maintaining a healthy lifestyle had a correlation with both 30-day and 30-90 day readmission. Further studies are needed to identify the SDOH variables that most accurately predict readmission after stroke/TIA. This will further the mandate for increased precision medicine, tailoring targeted interventions to improve the quality of life for stroke survivors.
Emergence has been proposed as an important construct for research on the safety of sociotechnical systems. There is, however, some dissension about the fundamental nature of emergence. Furthermore, there is little clarity on how this construct might be used within safety research to guide analysis or design of sociotechnical systems. Emergence has proven to be a challenging construct to pin down in disciplines such as philosophy and computer science. Most troubling is that the distinction between emergent and non-emergent phenomena remains unclear. Here we offer a pragmatic view by outlining models of different types of emergence. We subsequently argue that one type, functional-semantic emergence, bears on a crucial distinction between Safety I and Safety II as discussed within system safety research. We conclude that safety of sociotechnical systems can be enhanced by integrating retroactive control of non-emergent phenomena with proactive control of emergent phenomena where retroactive control is achieved through use of rules and procedures and proactive control is achieved through attention to subtle information and use of recognition-primed decisions.
We have verified the use of a serial filtration method to isolate picocyanobacteria for analysis. We used eDNA metabarcoding to confirm the picocyanobacteria as members of the Order Synechococcales, Genus Cyanobium, specifically Cyanobium 6307. Fluorometric analysis using accessory pigments phycocyanin and phycoerythrin described periods of excess biomass, where the net growth rate model confirmed these conditions. The total anatoxin-a concentrations in the picocyanobacterial sample ranged from 0.0074 - 6.41 μg·L-1 representing a 40-fold difference over the entire sampling season. Sampling frequency of every three days appeared to be an important factor in capturing these changes in anatoxin-a concentration. During a period of excess biomass, we were able to establish a linear correlation between cyanobacterial biomass and Anatoxin-a concentrations.
