Abstract High-quality drinking water is essential for modern settlements, and accurate modeling of solute mixing at pipe junctions is crucial in water distribution networks (WDNs). While complete mixing is often assumed, recent studies emphasize the need to account for incomplete mixing. This paper advances the understanding of incomplete mixing effects on water quality dynamics in WDNs. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are employed to examine how pipe connection angles in cross junctions influence solute mixing. The results highlight the significance of the junction angle and the relative distribution of inflow and outflow rates, whereas the diffusion coefficient and the turbulent Schmidt number have a limited influence. A generic regression model is developed to capture the nonlinear relationships between the dominant factors, providing accurate predictions of mixing at pipe junctions with minimal computational cost. The model is validated against experimental data from the literature and can be integrated into traditional WDN solvers such as EPANET. The findings improve the simulation reliability of contaminant concentration profiles, supporting more robust water quality analysis and advancing the state of the art in WDN modeling.
Workplace conflicts are common, yet most evidence links personality to broad conflict management styles rather than to how concrete episodes unfold. We used a mixed-methods design to examine whether Dark Triad and HEXACO traits predict the content and course of real conflicts. Hungarian employees (N = 318, 31.1% male, 68.9% female, Mage = 35.24, SD = 10.34) completed personality measures and provided written narratives of a workplace conflict in which they were directly involved. Narratives were inductively coded into indicators of conflict context, process, outcomes, and narrative structure, and binary logistic regressions were used to examine associations with personality traits.Personality traits were more strongly related to how conflicts unfolded and were interpreted than to their structural features, such as who was involved or what triggered the conflict. Interpersonal traits from the HEXACO model showed the most consistent associations with conflict dynamics, emotional responses, and relationship outcomes. Dark Triad traits showed selective but limited associations with conflict processes, offering little evidence for broad predictive advantages beyond broader personality dimensions.Overall, the findings suggest that workplace conflict is not only enacted but also interpreted through the lens of personality, highlighting the importance of integrating dispositional and situational perspectives in research on organizational conflict.
Background: Elevated APOBEC3B expression in tumours correlates with a kataegic pattern of localised hypermutation. We assessed the cellular phenotypes associated with high-level APOBEC3B expression and the influence of p53 status on these phenotypes using an isogenic system. Methods: We used RNA interference of p53 in cells with inducible APOBEC3B and assessed DNA damage response (DDR) biomarkers. The mutational effects of APOBEC3B were assessed using whole-genome sequencing. In vitro small-molecule inhibitor sensitivity profiling was used to identify candidate therapeutic vulnerabilities. Results: Although APOBEC3B expression increased the incorporation of genomic uracil, invoked DDR biomarkers and caused cell cycle arrest, inactivation of p53 circumvented APOBEC3B-induced cell cycle arrest without reversing the increase in genomic uracil or DDR biomarkers. The continued expression of APOBEC3B in p53-defective cells not only caused a kataegic mutational signature but also caused hypersensitivity to small-molecule DDR inhibitors (ATR, CHEK1, CHEK2, PARP, WEE1 inhibitors) as well as cisplatin/ATR inhibitor and ATR/PARP inhibitor combinations. Conclusions: Although loss of p53 might allow tumour cells to tolerate elevated APOBEC3B expression, continued expression of this enzyme might impart a number of therapeutic vulnerabilities upon tumour cells.
This paper investigates the scattering of flexural waves and the associated dynamic moment concentration around a circular hole with surface effects in an infinite thin plate. The analysis is based on the Gurtin–Murdoch surface elasticity theory integrated with classical thin-plate bending theory. Non-classical boundary conditions at the circular hole surface are derived, and the wave function expansion method is employed to obtain an analytical solution for the dynamic field. Numerical results reveal that the surface effects profoundly influence the dynamic moment concentration factor (DMCF). Specifically, at the micro/nanoscale, the presence of surface effects not only alters the distribution pattern of the DMCF around the hole but also induces a strong size-dependent behavior. This size dependence diminishes as the radius of hole increases to the macroscopic scale. This study underscores the critical role of surface effects in the mechanical behavior of micro/nanostructured plates.
The objective of this article is to provide an overview of the policy background of circular lifestyles in selected Central European countries, Czechia, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. Discussing related concepts and environmental policy integration in the selected region is followed by the presentation of our mixed research methodology, relying on macroindicators and content analysis. The outcomes of collecting strategic policy papers confirm that the policy landscape is fragmented, multiple documents have potential influence on circular economy and lifestyle. For documents tackling circular economy explicitly, the frequency of mentioning various types of opportunities, political and regulatory incentives; economic incentives; education and awareness raising; attitude and behaviour; existing sustainable and circular solutions; cooperation and innovation are overviewed, concluding that all of them are mentioned in every country, suggesting that they all follow a complex approach. It is revealed that top-down, direct incentives are more typical than innovation or cooperation. Further policy papers with circularity relevance are assessed in terms of their connections with CE concepts, revealing complex connections. It is concluded that cooperation among countries promise mutual benefits. Circular economy strategies can be integrated into sustainable development strategies, based on the extensive preparation and complex nature of the latter. The framework of opportunities can be applied during the implementation and evaluation of the policies as well.
