The Canton City School District (CCSD) is a public school district serving students in Canton, Ohio in the United States. In the 2020–2021 academic year its student enrollment was 8,000, making it the 22nd largest school district in the state. The district operates an early childhood center, nine elementary schools (K-3, 4–6, K-6) one 7-8 middle school and one 9-12 high school; McKinley high school. In addition to traditional schools, CCSD also operates eight magnet/alternative schools. While the district primarily serves students in Canton city limits, they also serve small sections of surrounding areas, as well as the village of Meyers Lake. Also, students in the northern part of the city go to the Plain Local School District.
This chapter per the authors discusses the importance of project-based learning in education today. It shares success stories of persistence and perseverance, acquisition of 21st Century skills, application of core subject standards to real-life situations and an increase in educational engagement. This chapter gives first hand accounts of possible solutions to problems faced by many urban schools with students currently. This chapter shares the success and support stories of a group of students in what was a short term action research project for them but also reveals the impact that short term encounter had on them personally.
