A fully quantum algorithm for solving the one-dimensional linear advection-diffusion equation using the Lattice Boltzmann method as a numerical procedure is presented in this work. We start by presenting a state of the art of the current usage of quantum algorithms for solving ordinary and partial differential equations. We then describe two algorithms for the one-dimensional Lattice Boltzmann method with two degrees of freedom. The first one is an existing hybrid quantum-classical algorithm with measurements at each time step, and the second one is our improved version, viz. a fully quantum algorithm where only one measurement is needed at the end of the algorithm. The fully quantum algorithm is first executed on a quantum simulator and then compared with a classical approach. Subsequently, the fully quantum algorithm is run on a quantum system with 133 qubits to investigate the effect of noise and the depth of the circuit on the output state. We find fluctuations in the final result due to the decoherence noise of the qubits.
Air traffic control systems are complex sociotechnical systems that do not comprise solely technical elements but also have human and organizational dimensions. Recent approaches to systems engineering, and in particular human systems integration, are placing increasing emphasis on incorporating these nontechnical considerations into the design processes of complex sociotechnical systems. In particular, one crucial aspect in design is to understand the operational context of the system. There is a lack of tools and languages expressive enough to include contextual information into system models. This is especially true for the air traffic control field, as the operational context of a control tower and the tower itself are deeply intertwined and interdependent. This paper is a step toward the achievement of better integration of context-related knowledge into system design processes. We conducted a case study analysis based on a literature review and feedback from civilian and military air traffic control practitioners, and we propose an ontology of the contextual elements that characterize the context of air traffic control operations.
Decision-making under uncertainty depends on how reasoning processes integrate incomplete or inconsistent information within complex sociotechnical systems, where maintaining situation awareness is essential. To better understand how experts form and revise their judgments, we introduce BELIEF, an elicitation-driven experimental platform that captures human belief assessments during information-fusion tasks under inconsistency. Built on human systems integration principles, BELIEF combines scenario-based experimentation with structured data modeling and a Dempster-Shafer theory based artificial agent serving as a normative baseline. The platform ensures full traceability of reasoning, supports reproducible analyses of belief dynamics, and enables comparison between human and artificial reasoning. A maritime object identification experiment illustrates how BELIEF tracks fine-grained belief updates, reveals deviations from normative reasoning, and quantifies distance and conflict between agents's beliefs, offering insights into cognitive processes underlying situation awareness. Ongoing developments target large-scale data collection, and adaptive human-AI teaming, thereby informing the design of transparent and bias-aware reasoning-support systems.
Entity linking (EL) on tabular data often produces many ambiguous cell annotations that are costly to review. We present KOALA-UI, a lightweight web interface for inspecting and refining EL results on spreadsheets and CSV-like tables. KOALA-UI provides table navigation, cell-level candidate panels, color-coded scores, simple filtering, and in-place edits with export. To enable reuse across backends, KOALA-UI consumes a compact JSON schema and responses compatible with the W3C Entity Reconciliation specification, allowing integration with potentially any EL backend. We illustrate KOALA-UI with the Crocodile EL framework and demonstrate a human-in-the-loop (HITL) workflow. In addition, we report a preliminary user study, a real business use case, and a validation of pipeline execution through TAO–a workflow engine, where Crocodile was integrated as a module.
