Eastern Florida State College, formerly Brevard Community College, is a public college in Brevard County, Florida. It is a member of the Florida College System and has campuses in Cocoa, Melbourne, Palm Bay, and Titusville, as well as a Virtual Campus.Since its inception, the college has served more than a half-million students. About 35,000 students take courses annually on the Titusville, Cocoa, Melbourne and Palm Bay campuses, and online. According to state Florida College System statistics, the college has among the top graduation rates in the 28-member Florida College System, and the highest graduation rate among state and community colleges in Central Florida. In 2010, the college reported 25,000 students enrolled for courses. There were 1,200 employees in 2011, including support personnel and faculty.
The understanding of evolutionary relationships among insect lineages has received special attention in recent years, leading to an increasing number of studies aiming to shed light on their diversity, biogeography, and species boundaries. Despite the growing use of integrative taxonomic approaches, the positioning and relationships of some groups remain controversial, mainly due to limited sampling and low-resolution genetic markers. This is the case of the Neotropical butterfly tribe Haeterini (Nymphalidae: Satyrinae), characterized by unique coloration patterns in which species display either transparent or dark wings. To date, species boundaries within Haeterini remain uncertain due to limited knowledge of their natural history and reliance on traditional morphology. Our study investigated species delimitation patterns and phylogenetic relationships within Haeterini using molecular and morphological data. Our sampling included most of the tribe's distribution range, including previously unsampled regions. We applied quantitative methods to analyze wing coloration patterns and explored the tribe's biogeographic history and diversification. Our findings contrast with previous studies and reveal weak support for some currently recognized species and subspecies, challenging Haeterini taxonomy. Additionally, the biogeographical analysis failed to identify a region of origin for the tribe but suggested dispersal-driven diversification with 8 vicariance events during the Miocene, consistent with major physiographic events such as the Pebas and Acre wetlands and the Andes orogeny. The tribe's diversification likely occurred at a relatively low, constant rate, with few speciation events, aligning with the museum model of diversification in the Neotropics.
Homelessness continues to be a chronic social crisis throughout the world, and is a public health issue. Most of the time, homelessness is caused by unaffordable housing, lawful evictions, mental illnesses, addictions, natural disasters, divorce, employment difficulties, lack of family support, and gambling. Homelessness affects individuals, families, veterans, children, the elderly, victims of domestic violence, and those who were formerly incarcerated. According to the United Nations, there are more than 100 million homeless people globally, and another 1.1 billion live in inadequate housing. According to the CDC, homelessness is closely linked to declines in physical as well as mental health. The homeless experience significantly increases rates of mental illness, infections, and substance abuse. To solve the homelessness crisis, the government and society must work together to provide better assistance with housing, treatment for mental disorders and addictions, treatment for physical ailments, job rehabilitation and training, and community support.
When controversial billionaire Donald J. Trump declared his improbable candidacy for President of the United States in 2015, it did not take long for best-selling author Stephen King to begin lambasting candidate Trump on Twitter (now X). King quickly utilized Trump’s preferred social media outlet to lob his own rhetorical bombshells right back at Trump. King’s invectives against Trump go beyond serving immediate gratification to those who despise Trump; indeed, King can be viewed as part of an online collective identity, otherwise known as digitally networked action, engaged in activist resistance to the political power wielded by Trump. This essay explores how King’s “certain kind of rough justice” operates within the long American tradition of political protest.
Neurotransmitters are molecules that, like electrical signals, carry and sometimes amplify signals between nerves and other nerves or between nerves and other cell types. They affect many functions, including our emotions, thoughts, memories, movements, and sleep patterns. Synaptic transmission is mostly affected by enhancement or inhibition of neurotransmitter release, breakdown, and reabsorption, along with the blocking of neurotransmitter binding to receptors. Neurotransmitters may be amino acids, small peptides, or derivative chemicals. The most well-known neurotransmitters include acetylcholine, dopamine, gamma-aminobutyric acid, glutamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. Over 50 neurotransmitters, or potential neurotransmitters, have been documented. When their functions become abnormal, a variety of different mental disorders may develop.
