As a junior college approved by Ministry of Education, it offers two-year curriculum for vocational high school graduates and five-year curriculum for junior high school graduates. Upon successful completion of the study, students receive associate degrees.[note 1] In addition, it provides two-year vocational training for workers.
Dynapenic abdominal obesity (DAO) is known to increase the risk of physical decline and falls in older adults. However, it is still unclear how different factors—such as sleep quality, nutrition, social participation, cognition, and mood—work together to influence this risk. The aim of this study was to identify factors associated with fall risk—specifically sleep quality, nutritional status, community participation, cognitive function, and depressive symptoms—among community-dwelling older adults with dynapenic abdominal obesity. We conducted a cross-sectional study with 180 adults aged 65 and above. Validated questionnaires were used to measure sleep quality, nutritional status, community participation, cognitive function, depressive symptoms, and fall risk. Data were analyzed using t-tests, ANOVA, and logistic regression. Although poor sleep showed differences in the univariate analysis, it did not remain significant in the multivariable model. Older adults with malnutrition, lower community participation, cognitive decline, or depressive symptoms were more likely to have a higher fall risk. Logistic regression further indicated that nutritional status (OR = 7.03, p = .013), community participation (OR = 0.91, p = .031), cognition (OR = 6.18, p = .028), and depressive symptoms (OR = 9.23, p = .008) were significant predictors. Fall risk in older adults with DAO is influenced by a mix of physical, psychological, and social factors. Community nurses and other health professionals should routinely check nutrition, cognitive function, and emotional health to identify those at higher risk early and provide more holistic, preventive care that supports safe aging.
Early identification of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is essential for timely intervention. This study applies supervised machine learning to predict MCI using heart rate variability (HRV) indicators. Data from 157 individuals (107 normal, 50 MCI) were analyzed with four key features: low-frequency power (Lfa), pNN50, heart rate, and age. After preprocessing, logistic regression (LR) and random forest (RF) models were developed. The LR model showed Lfa (β = 0.88) and resting heart rate (β = 0.10) positively associated with MCI, while pNN50 (β = −0.22) was negatively associated. The RF classifier achieved 85.4
The increasing proportion of older adults globally poses challenges to mental well-being, as aging is often accompanied by a decline in positive emotional experiences (PEE) and life satisfaction (LS). While previous studies have explored the relationship between basic psychological needs satisfaction (BPNS) and mental health in older adults, the role of life satisfaction as a mediating factor in the relationship between BPNS and daily emotional well-being remains underexplored. This study aims to investigate the relationship between BPNS and PEE among older adults and to examine the mediating role of LS. By employing the Experience Sampling Method (ESM) through a mobile application, the study provides real-time data on the emotional experiences of older adults. The study recruited 33 older adults (mean age = 63.24 years, SD = 5.92) who reported their daily emotional states through a mobile application three times a day for nine days. A total of 811 valid records were collected. Positive emotional experiences were assessed at the experience level, while BPNS and LS were assessed at the individual level. Data were analyzed using Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) to examine the mediating effect of LS between BPNS and PEE. Results revealed that LS significantly mediated the relationship between BPNS and PEE. Older adults with higher BPNS reported higher LS, which in turn enhanced their daily PEE. This finding supports the hypothesis that BPNS positively influences PEE through improved LS. The study highlights the importance of fostering BPNS to improve LS and daily positive emotions among older adults. The use of mobile applications to capture dynamic emotional states offers a practical and scalable approach for psychological research, particularly in aging populations. Further interventions could focus on enhancing BPNS to promote emotional well-being in older adults.
Healthy aging emphasizes the maintenance of optimal physical functioning. As older adults age, they may experience muscle loss and decline in physical abilities, which can lead to a greater need for long-term care services. This loss of independence may result in reduced opportunities for social engagement, including learning and participation in various programs. Therefore, this study aims to implement a long-term physical activity program and investigate its benefits for older adults in day care facilities. The goal is to provide valuable insights for future program design in similar settings, offering more stable and long-lasting solutions. The study included 57 Taiwanese older adults from day care facilities, comprising 8 males and 49 females, with ages ranging from 72 to 100 years (mean age of 85.6 +/- 1.3 years). The participants engaged in a physical activity program twice a week, with each session lasting one hour, over a period of 24 weeks (December, 2021 to June, 2022). Changes in participants' functional fitness were measured before and after the exercise intervention. The results demonstrated significant improvements in participants' functional fitness following the intervention, indicating the potential of a 24-week physical activity program for promoting health in older adults. This study employed a progressive and long-term physical activity program, suggesting that care professionals should consider adopting similar approaches to provide stable and extended programs within long-term care facilities. Implementing such programs may enhance the physical functioning of older adults.
To investigate the association between intrinsic capacity (IC) and sarcopenia among older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). This cross-sectional study included 409 community-dwelling older adults with T2D (mean age: 71.2 ± 5.8 years; 207 men, 202 women). IC was assessed using the WHO framework across five domains: cognition (Brain Health Test), locomotion (Short Physical Performance Battery), vitality (Mini Nutritional Assessment–Short Form), sensory (vision and hearing tests), and psychological function (15-item Geriatric Depression Scale). Each impaired domain contributed one point to the total IC impairment score (range: 0–5), with higher scores indicating greater IC decline. Sarcopenia was defined based on the 2019 Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) criteria, including muscle mass, grip strength, and physical performance. Multiple logistic regression was used to examine associations between IC impairment and sarcopenia. The prevalence of sarcopenia was 13.4
