Kwara State Polytechnic is a Nigerian tertiary institution that was established in 1973 by the then Military Governor of Kwara State Col. David Bamigboye after the decision of establishing a polytechnic in Kwara State was announced in 1971. It is located in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State.
The adverse effects of contaminants such as heavy metals on the environment and human health make their presence in water a major global concern. Heavy metals like lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, and chromium are highly toxic and originate from sources including mining, agricultural runoff, industrial waste, and improper waste disposal. Their persistence in aquatic environments leads to bioaccumulation in the food chain, posing risks of mutagenicity, neurotoxicity, and carcinogenicity. Conventional water treatment methods, such as ion exchange, chemical precipitation, and membrane filtration, have limitations related to secondary waste production, cost, and efficiency. Significant advancements in remediation technologies, like adsorption using carbon-based materials, nanomaterials, microbial biodegradation, electrochemical methods, and combined techniques, offer promising solutions for addressing heavy metal pollution. Metal-organic frameworks, functionalised polymers, and carbon-based nanomaterials possess high adsorption capacities, while bio-sorbents derived from bacteria, fungi, and algae present sustainable alternatives. Techniques such as photocatalysis and electrocoagulation are increasingly recognised as efficient and eco-friendly water treatment options. While each method has its own drawbacks, like sludge formation in chemical precipitation, high membrane demands, or limited adsorption selectivity, combining two or more approaches can mitigate these issues and enhance overall efficiency. This review critically explores the sources of heavy metals, their environmental impacts, and recent innovations in remediation, with a focus on cost-effective and sustainable solutions. Advanced treatment technologies such as electrospun membranes, photocatalysts and electrochemical systems have demonstrated 80–99
IOD has changed how industrial products are contemplated and manufactured. Industrial design no longer focuses solely on product appearance but also encompasses datadriven, generative models, digital twins, metaheuristic algorithms, and human-centred design philosophies to create optimised form, function, and manufacturing. This systematic review synthesises literature published between 2015 and 2025 on IOD within mechanical and intelligent manufacturing. Building on openaccess articles and conference proceedings, this review discusses how AI, generative design, and digital twin technologies can reduce prototyping time, enhance design iteration, enable the selection of sustainable materials, and enable product personalisation. This study also discusses meta-heuristic optimisation approaches for scheduling, process planning, and structural design, and identifies the latest developments, such as chaotic elite clone particle swarm optimisation (CECPSO), which enhances task allocation in industrial wireless sensor networks by up to 21% compared with traditional genetic algorithms. A conceptual framework is proposed to illustrate the interaction among industrial design, AI techniques, digital twins, and manufacturing processes. Bibliometric analysis indicates that generative design and digital twin-related research increased rapidly after 2018, while the review of meta-heuristic optimisation has been increasing steadily. Gaps identified in the review include the lack of holistic frameworks, the interpretability of AI-driven models, and the integration of human expertise.
Cervical cancer remains a leading cause of mortality among women, particularly in resource-limited settings where cytological screening is hindered by manual analysis challenges. This study presents a joint segmentation and classification framework integrating U-Net and a CNN ensemble to automate and enhance the accuracy of cervical cell analysis. The U-Net architecture is employed to delineate nuclei and cytoplasmic boundaries from Pap smear images, leveraging skip connections to preserve spatial resolution in complex cellular environments. Following segmentation, an ensemble classifier combining ResNet-50, VGG-16, and InceptionV3 is utilised to differentiate cervical cell types with high precision. The proposed method was evaluated on benchmark datasets (APACS-23, Cx22, SIPaKMeD) using stratified five-fold cross-validation and external validation cohorts. Experimental results achieved a mean Dice coefficient of 0.934 for segmentation and a classification accuracy of 94.6
This study examines the impact of effective teamwork on public service delivery in Oyun Local Government. Teamwork is a fundamental component of organizational success, particularly in public institutions where employees from different departments must collaborate to achieve common goals. The study investigates how communication, cooperation, trust, leadership, and coordination among staff influence the quality, efficiency, and timeliness of public services delivered to citizens. The research adopts a descriptive survey design, using structured questionnaires to collect data from employees of Oyun Local Government. Data are analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the relationship between effective teamwork and service delivery. The study is anchored on Teamwork Theory and Systems Theory, which emphasize collaboration, interdependence, and coordinated efforts in achieving organizational objectives. The findings are expected to reveal that effective teamwork significantly improves employee productivity, enhances decision-making, promotes efficient utilization of resources, reduces service delays, and increases public satisfaction. Conversely, poor teamwork is likely to result in communication gaps, conflicts, duplication of duties, low staff morale, and poor service outcomes. The study concludes that effective teamwork is essential for achieving efficient and responsive public service delivery in local government administration. It recommends that the management of Oyun Local Government should strengthen team-building initiatives, encourage open communication, provide leadership training, establish clear organizational goals, and introduce reward systems that promote collaborative performance. The findings will contribute to knowledge in public administration and provide practical recommendations for improving service delivery in local government institutions.
The world of digital technology has transformed the economy at a very high rate leaving the youth with opportunities and threats. This paper will examine how digital entrepreneurship can be used as a revolutionary instrument to empower youths and as a strategic measure of curbing cybercrime. The research is based on the Social Cognitive Theory (Bandura, 1986), which proposes that offering the youth with digital skills, positive surroundings, and entrepreneurship knowledge will stimulate them to participate in productive activities instead of participating in unlawful online practices. The literature review reveals a research gap: although the entrepreneurship studies are on the increase, not many studies have explicitly determined the relationship between digital entrepreneurship and cybercrime prevention among the youths in the developing countries, especially in Nigeria. The study design was a descriptive survey where the structured questionnaires were issued to 320 respondents, 287 (89.7) of whom were eligible. Regression and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Findings indicate that digital entrepreneurship positively affects the youth empowerment (r = 0.61, p < 0.01) and innovation/job creation (r = 0.56, p < 0.01) and negatively on cyber-risk involvement (r = -0.42, p < 0.05). The availability of training, mentorship, and internet connectivity were also important factors that affected the level of participation. The paper concludes that besides making youths more empowered, digital entrepreneurship can also act as a preventive measure to cybercrime because the potential threats are converted into legitimate opportunities. Such recommendations as digital skills training expansion, better investments and infrastructure, development of mentorship networks, and the incorporation of cyber-ethics in the curriculum of entrepreneurship are offered to ensure sustainable youth growth and digital inclusion.
