The Malayan Colleges Laguna (MCL or simply Malayan) is a private, non-sectarian, and wholly owned subsidiary of Mapúa University along with the other subsidiaries like the Mapúa IT Center in Makati and the Malayan High School of Science in Manila.MCL is among the first major institutions to branch out from the National Capital Region and set up campus in Southern Luzon in 2006. Additionally, it is known for its lack of patron saint as opposed to the traditional universities in the Philippines. With 18 baccalaureate programs, MCL has five degree-offering colleges, namely the Mapúa Institute of Technology at Laguna, the Mapúa-PTC College of Maritime Education and Training, the E.T. Yuchengco College of Business, the College of Computer and Information Science, and the College of Arts and Sciences. As of 2011, 69 position of its students are enrolled in engineering programs.
OBJECTIVES:We aimed to characterize the intrinsic AmpC β-lactamase (EMC-2) from an Escherichia marmotae clinical isolate recovered from a bloodstream infection, exhibiting resistance to broad-spectrum cephalosporins. METHODS:Cloning experiments in Escherichia coli were performed to evaluate the impact of the respective AmpC enzymes on β-lactam susceptibility. Purification of the enzymes was performed by ion-exchange chromatography, and kinetic assays were performed by UV spectrophotometry. RESULTS:By comparing the sequence of this AmpC with that of a WT E. marmotae, four amino acid substitutions and one amino acid deletion at position 296 were identified. Furthermore, a promoter alteration was responsible for an enhanced gene expression. Production of EMC-2 in E. coli TOP10 conferred an extended-spectrum AmpC (ESAC) phenotype characterized by increased MICs of cefotaxime, cefepime and cefiderocol. Site-directed mutagenesis confirmed the important role of the Arg296 deletion in this phenotype. CONCLUSIONS:We showed that the intrinsic AmpC of E. marmotae can acquire both structural and regulatory modifications that broaden its substrate spectrum, leading to reduced susceptibility to clinically relevant β-lactams, including cefiderocol.
Understanding how nurse researchers perceive and utilize this technology offers insights into its integration within the nursing education system in the Philippines and globally, The study described Filipino nurse researchers' knowledge, perception, and attitudes toward ChatGPT and research productivity. Using a descriptive correlational design, self-made, validated, and piloted questionnaires were sent to three hundred seventy Filipino nurse researchers, both novice (<5 years of research experience) and seasoned (> 10 years of experience). Descriptive statistics were used for profile characteristics, while an independent sample t-test was used to identify significant differences between the two groups of participants in KPA and research productivity. Pearson's product-moment correlation and a standard linear regression analysis examined the relationship between the independent (KPA) and dependent (research productivity) variables. The level of statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. The largest participant group comprised female Filipino nurse researchers aged 20-30 with Master's degrees in Nursing. They reported having less than 10 years of experience as instructors and having published 1-5 research articles. The KPA scores indicated a general understanding of ChatGPT’s capabilities, as a valuable tool for research and positive regard toward its use. The study findings further revealed that the t-test did not show a statistically significant difference in perception (t=1.28, p=0.20) and research productivity (t=1.28, p=0,20). But knowledge (t=4.73, p=0.00) and attitude (t=1.28,p=0.02) were found to be significant. Further analysis revealed an adjusted R-square of .145, indicating that the independent variables (knowledge, perception, and attitude) can explain approximately 14.5% of the variance in research productivity. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between attitudes toward ChatGPT and research productivity (β = 0.141, p = 0.012). This study comprised female instructors aged 20-30 with Master's degrees in Nursing and less than 10 years of experience. They reported having 1-5 publications, suggesting moderate research activity. While the findings revealed a general understanding of ChatGPT's potential for research, participants hesitated to integrate its use due to ethical concerns, which need further education on the responsible use of ChatGPT in research. Moreover, study findings suggest that Filipino nurse researchers who are more open to using ChatGPT tend to demonstrate greater research output.
This thesis study entitled “Organizational Commitment, Adaptive Performance and Job Satisfaction of Hotel Employees in Region XII” investigated the level of organizational commitment, adaptive performance and job satisfaction of hotel employees and designed to yield an intervention program that will help increase if not sustain the above-mentioned variables. The study consisted of 10 problems and 3 hypotheses. The research instrument which was an adapted 4-part questionnaire was administered to 782 hotel employees, 91 of which are managers/administration and 691 are employees of two-to-four stars hotels in Region XII accredited by the Department of Tourism to examine the level of organizational commitment, adaptive performance and job satisfaction of hotel employees. It used the descriptive research design particularly descriptive normative survey and correlational research to determine the level of organizational commitment, adaptive performance and job satisfaction of hotel employees. The paradigm of the study was the IPO (input, process, and output) where each variable was thoroughly discussed in the review of related literature and studies. The data were statistically analyzed using the frequency count, percentages, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson r. The result shows that respondents were often committed to the organization, often performed adaptively and often satisfied with their job. The hotel is therefore, urged to improve the level of organizational commitment, adaptive performance, and job satisfaction of hotel employees. Relative to the result of the study, an intervention program in a form of revisiting the policy manual and strategic planning is proposed.
Concrete is the most widely used construction material, but its environmental impact and reliance on finite resources have driven the need for more sustainable solutions. This research paper presents the optimization of bamboo fiber and wood ash as supplementary materials in concrete to enhance its mechanical performance and sustainability. A powerful statistical technique known as Response Surface Methodology was employed to systematically investigate the effects of varying bamboo fiber and wood ash content on the compressive and flexural strengths of concrete. The optimal combination of 0.36% bamboo fiber and 13.43% wood ash resulted in a flexural strength of 3.227 MPa and a compressive strength of 18.444 MPa, demonstrating the significant potential of these sustainable materials to improve concrete's mechanical properties. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for the construction industry, highlighting the feasibility of utilizing bamboo fiber and wood ash to develop more durable and environmentally friendly concrete mixtures that can contribute to a more sustainable built environment.
AbstractPurposeThis study aims to evaluate the status of Open Access Institutional Repositories (OAIRs) in Ukraine as listed in the Directory of Open Access Repositories (Open DOAR), focusing on key repository characteristics including year-wise growth, type, subject coverage, content types, languages, and software used.Design/Methodology/ApproachThe study adopts a descriptive research approach. Data were collected from the OpenDOAR website as of September 23,2024. The collected data were analysed and presented through tables and charts to identifY trends and patterns across multiple parameters such as repository type, year of registration, subject discipline, software usage, and language interface.FindingsA total of 98 institutional repositories from Ukraine were examined. Institutional repositories dominated the landscape (96.94%), with the highest number registered in 2019. English was the most used interface language (79.2%), followed by Ukrainian and Russian. Science, technology, and social sciences emergedas the mostre presented subjects. journal articles and theses constituted the majority of repository content. DSpace was the predominant software used (88. 78%).Practical ImplicationsThe findings offer valuable insights for repository developers, policy makers, and academic institutions in Ukraine, guiding them toward strengthening open access infrastructure and enhancing research visibility.Originality/ValueThis study provides a focused assessment of Ukraine's contribution to global open access through institutional repositories, helping to benchmark its progress and identify areas for strategic development.
