Newman College is an Australian Roman Catholic co-educational residential college affiliated with the University of Melbourne. During the university year it houses about 220 undergraduate students and about 80 postgraduate students and tutors. The college was named after John Henry Newman, a former Anglican and major figure in the Oxford Movement who became a Roman Catholic in the 19th century. Although most strongly affiliated with the University of Melbourne, a small number of undergraduate students attend RMIT University, Monash University's Parkville and City campuses, and the Australian Catholic University. The collegiate system was a response to the secular nature of the university, as each of the major Christian churches were given land to the north of the main campus to establish institutions in which to teach religion. The college motto is Luceat Lux Vestra, translating from Latin as "Let Your Light Shine".At its opening the administration of the college was entrusted to the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) who continue its administration to the present day. As of 2020, the rector of the college is Frank Brennan SJ AO, an Australian Jesuit priest, human rights lawyer and academic.
Dissociative symptoms are prevalent and disabling, but little is known about what factors can longitudinally predict dissociative symptoms. This study examined the protective role of perceived social support against dissociative symptoms. We analyzed data from the International Dissociative Depression Survey Project (N = 152) and the International Female Mental Health Survey Project (N = 293). In both samples, participants completed validated measures of dissociative symptoms and perceived social support at baseline, and then reported their dissociative symptoms after approximately 6 to 12 months. We tested the hypothesis that perceived social support would predict subsequent dissociative symptoms in each sample and see whether the results could be replicated across different samples. After controlling for demographic variables, childhood trauma, and baseline dissociative symptoms, baseline perceived social support was significantly associated with fewer dissociative symptoms at follow-up (β = − 0.129 to − 0.198, p = .001). The results were replicated across the two samples. This study contributes to the very limited literature on the longitudinal predictors of dissociative symptoms. Our results point to the critical role of social-interpersonal and family interventions in preventing and treating dissociative symptoms.
A distinct optical-electrochemical correlation is uncovered in acid-free synthesized polyaniline/zinc oxide (PANI/ZnO) nanocomposites, revealing how controlled ZnO incorporation governs charge-storage dynamics and interfacial behavior. The acid-free oxidative polymerization route enables sustainable, reproducible synthesis with uniform ZnO dispersion and robust PANI-ZnO coupling. Structural characterizations including XRD, FTIR, TEM, and XPS confirm the successful incorporation of ZnO within the PANI matrix and strong interfacial interaction. Herein, we report the impact of temperature variation on the properties of carbon dots (CDs) synthesized via the hydrothermal method using Myxopyrum smilacifolium. CDs were prepared at three different temperatures and characterized using a comprehensive set of techniques, including UV-Vis spectroscopy, Tauc plot analysis, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). UV-Visible spectroscopy revealed a broad absorption spectrum with a prominent peak at 240 nm, which indicate strong quantum confinement effects. Tauc plot analysis demonstrated temperature-dependent variations in bandgap energy, with higher bandgaps for CDs have higher synthesis temperatures. PL spectroscopy exhibited blueshift in emission as the synthesis temperature increased. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of hydrophilic functional groups such as C=O and O-H and DLS measurements indicated particle sizes ranging from 6 to 8 nm. As synthesized CDs were applied as seed priming agents on mung bean plants to investigate their impacts on germination and its growth. It was found that CDs synthesized at higher temperatures promote significant root and stem growth in mung bean plants, likely due to enhanced nutrient uptake and stress tolerance. These findings highlight the potential of CDs as eco-friendly agricultural fertilizers and provide valuable insights into their multifunctionality for applications in optoelectronics and sustainable agriculture.
Abstract Aims Self-report checklists are commonly used to collect health information in social and epidemiological studies. Little is known about the reliability of such self-report data. This study examined the 6-month test–retest reliability of 28 clinical diagnoses and health histories as self-reported by a sample of adult female mental health service users. Methods A convenience sample of female mental health service users (N = 293) provided self-report data on their health histories – including physical, psychiatric, neurodevelopmental and functional domains – two times, approximately 6 months apart. We calculated the agreement rates and Cohen’s kappa of the results. Results The results demonstrated high levels of temporal consistency. Agreement rates were ≥84.5% for all conditions, while Cohen’s kappa values were above 0.50 for 21 out of 28 conditions. Conclusions Self-report checklists, as widely used in survey studies, can yield reliable health data. Social and health science researchers can employ such checklists to collect health background information of research participants, especially when clinical validation is not feasible or when hospital records are not accessible.
Bis(thiourea) cadmium chloride (BTCC) is a semiorganic nonlinear optical crystal with promising second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency. In this study, L-proline-doped BTCC crystals were grown for the first time using the slow solvent evaporation method with doping concentrations of 2–8 mol
