The Northwest African American Museum (NAAM) serves to present and preserve the connections between the Pacific Northwest and people of African descent and investigate and celebrate Black experiences in America through exhibitions, programs and events. The museum is located in Seattle, Washington's historically African-American Central District neighborhood in the former Colman School (built 1909, with official status as a City of Seattle landmark. The building also contains 36 units of affordable housing.
This paper evaluates the technical and economic performance of an experimental building-integrated earth–air heat exchanger (EAHE) system in arid regions during winter. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems can account for up to half of a building’s energy consumption, making them a critical focus for energy conservation. The EAHE system was tested for its ability to maintain indoor temperature and humidity levels using geothermal energy. The EAHE system maintained indoor temperatures of 10°C–20°C and humidity of 30%–50%, with US$2120 construction cost and rising maintenance expenses, offering significant energy savings as a viable HVAC alternative despite the high initial investment.
A numerical simulation of the behavior of three types of solar cells: Si (N⁺)/Si (P), SnO2/Si (N⁺)/Si (P), and ZnO/Si (N⁺)/Si (P) is presented in this study. The simulation is devoted to analyzing the impact of the SnO2 and ZnO window layers on the device’s performance. We utilize a renowned photovoltaic modelling code, namely PC1D. A comparative analysis was conducted on the performance of the three structures Si (N⁺)/Si (P), SnO2 /Si (N⁺)/Si (P), and ZnO /Si (N⁺)/Si (P), assessing their impact on the characteristic I (V)/P(V) and efficiency, confirming an increase in conversion efficiency with the addition of the two anti-reflective layers such as SnO2 and ZnO with 31.41% and 33.64%, respectively.
This study investigates fatigue crack propagation in aluminum alloy 2024-T351 under constantamplitude loading (CAL) and variable-amplitude loading (VAL), with a focus on energy parameters. The hysteretic energy dissipated at each load level (or per block) exhibits trends comparable to those observed under CAL conditions. At high propagation rates, both the dissipated hysteretic energy and the crack growth rate vary linearly, consistent with a propagation mechanism characterized by the formation of striations in each cycle. At lower propagation rates, the relationship between crack growth rate and dissipated energy per block follows a power-law form. The analysis is extended through quantitative microfractographic observations using scanning electron microscopy, which reveal the spatial distribution of key fractographic features and the mechanisms governing crack propagation. Based on these findings, an energy-based model is proposed that allows the replacement of load spectra with an equivalent constant-amplitude loading.
In the landscape of contemporary Tamil poetry, women poets are vociferously raising their voices through their verses to reclaim their selfhood. This journey of women searching for their own identity expands like a cosmos within the literary sphere. This research paper deeply analyzes the intricate body politics present in the selected poems of Tamil women poets such as Salma, Sukirtharani, Kutti Revathi, Malathi Maithri, and Uma Maheswari. Western critical social theories, such as Hélène Cixous's 'Écriture Féminine' (writing the body) and Simone de Beauvoir's 'The Second Sex,' provide the theoretical framework for this endeavor to liberate the female from traditional patriarchal constructs. The primary objective of this paper is to examine the strategy through which these poets document their experiences of oppression, marginalization, pain, and anguish as poems within their creative 'space of flight' (parathal veli). Consequently, these poets reframe the female body not as a target of oppression, but as an enduring force of an indestructible cosmic dynamism, often constructed through metaphors of the five classical elements (Aimbhūtas). The study finds that the bold and direct corporeal language employed by these poets’ functions as a radical political act, subverting the values and public morality of the patriarchal society.
