Context: Morphometry of acetabulum bears immense clinical, surgical, and medicolegal significance. It helps clinicians to diagnose and manage hip dysplasia and hip osteoarthritis. Radiological Morphometric parameters of the acetabulum are essential to orthopaedic surgeons for planning before acetabulum surgery and selection of appropriate size acetabular components during total hip arthroplasty. The present study was designed to establish data on different morphometric parameters of the acetabulum in the adult Bangladeshi population and to determine differences in these parameters between males and females. Materials and methods: The study was conducted in the Department of Anatomy, Sir Salimullah Medical College, Dhaka from July 2020 to June 2021 on the anteroposterior radiographs of the pelvis of 70 adult Bangladeshi people age ranging from 25-45 years. Acetabular width and acetabular depth were measured unilaterally from the left side on the radiographs with MB ruler software. Then acetabular quotient was calculated. Comparison of the parameters between adult Bangladeshi males and females was done by unpaired student’s t-test. Results: The mean acetabular width of male and female were 66.69 ± 3.49 mm and 60.19 ± 4.20 mm respectively; the mean acetabular depth of male and female were 20.47 ± 2.67 mm and 19.15 ± 2.92 mm respectively and the acetabular quotient of male and female were 305.09 ± 31.59 and 313.97 ± 31.84 respectively. Conclusion: In the present study mean acetabular width was significantly higher in males while mean acetabular quotient was higher in females and the difference was significant. Disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection can mimic tuberculosis (TB) in immunocompetent individuals, leading to diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Clinicians should consider nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) in patients unresponsive to anti-tubercular therapy (ATT), especially in endemic regions.
Context: Morphometry of femoral neck is important to anatomists, radiologists, orthopaedic surgeons, prosthetists and forensic experts. The study was aimed to provide a standard data of different morphometric parameters of the femoral neck in adult Bangladeshi population and to determine the differences in these parameters between male and female. Materials and methods: The study was conducted in the Department of Anatomy, Sir Salimullah Medical College, Dhaka from July 2020 to June 2021 on the anteroposterior radiographs of pelvis of 70 adult Bangladeshi population age ranging from 25-45 years. Femoral neck width, femoral neck length and femoral neck- shaft angle were measured unilaterally on the radiographs with MB ruler software. Comparison on the parameters between adult Bangladeshi male and female was done by unpaired student’s ‘t’ test. Results: Mean femoral neck width of male and female were 34.46 ± 2.79 mm and 29.59 ± 3.05 mm respectively, mean femoral neck length were 53.86 ± 0.97 mm and 49.03 ± 4.33 mm respectively and mean femoral neck- shaft angle were 132.11° ± 4.04° and 131.16° ± 3.69° respectively. Conclusion: In the present study mean femoral neck width and femoral neck length were significantly higher in male than female. Bangladesh Journal of Anatomy January 2022, Vol. 20, No. 1, pp. 9-13
Mpox (Monkeypox) is a zoonotic Orthopox virus of the Poxviridae family. The general public in Bangladesh should be informed about Mpox to reduce the burden of a possible epidemic in the community. The study aimed to determine the level of public awareness and knowledge about Mpox among the general community to provide information regarding future preventive measures. From May to August 2022, this nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted in eight administrative divisions in Bangladesh with a semi-structured questionnaire consisting of knowledge-based questions about Mpox. Among the total of 1,711 respondents, almost two-thirds (N = 1139) of the respondents had heard about Mpox prior to the study. But we observed poor knowledge scores about the transmission pathways (0.71 ± 0.73), vaccination (0.09 ± 0.27), and the signs and symptoms of Mpox (1.91 ± 1.50). Most participants were also unaware of the treatment options of Mpox (0.22 ± 0.59). Educational status and occupation were found to affect the knowledge significantly (p value < 0.001). This study showed that the higher the education level, the higher the knowledge level. Overall, our results suggest that the general community has a minimal understanding of the spread of Mpox and its prevention. Thereby to combat and prevent a potential endemic, it is essential to implement either live or virtual awareness programs about this virus in Bangladesh and similar countries.
