Microplastic pollution is a major global sustainability challenge, affecting ecosystems, human health, and progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Although scientific output has grown rapidly, limited research has systematically examined the evolution, structure, and knowledge gaps of this field. This study addresses that need through a three-phase approach: (1) a bibliometric analysis of 12,544 publications from 1974 to 2025; (2) the application of machine learning techniques, including natural language processing, logistic regression, Random Forest, and XGBoost, to identify influential contributions; and (3) a systematic review of key studies published between 2021 and 2025, developed from the results obtained through the logistic regression model and conducted following the PRISMA protocol. Data were retrieved from Scopus and analyzed in R using the Bibliometrix package for text mining and data cleaning, complemented by the Tree of Science method to map citation-based knowledge structures. Results indicate that China, the United States, and India lead in publication output and methodological diversity. Despite this growth, important gaps persist, particularly the lack of standardized detection methods and insufficient research on interactions between microplastics and other pollutants. The findings underscore the need for integrative conceptual frameworks to reduce theoretical fragmentation and strengthen evidence-based policymaking. Overall, the field is shifting from impact assessment toward solution-oriented research, highlighting the importance of aligning technological innovation in degradation and resource recovery with environmental risk management and circular economy strategies.
Objective: Analyze physical fitness variables and body composition to define patterns or similarities in performance using principal component analysis. Materials and Methods: Sixty-eight players participated in the study, divided into three groups according to their age: Under-13 (n = 23), Under-15 (n = 27) and Under-17 (n = 18). A comparative cross-sectional study was performed. The variables analyzed were squat jump, countermovement jump, countermovement jump with arms, hamstring strength, COD-Timer 5-0-5, COD-Timer 5 + 5, speed (5, 10, 15 m), and running anaerobic sprint test. Body composition variables were skinfold thickness, diameters, and circumferences. Results: For the squat jump, 10.4% of the variability in speed (η2 = 0.104) and 12.5% of the variability in jump height (η2 = 0.125) are explained by category, both with moderate effect sizes. For the countermovement jump, 10.8% of the variability in speed (η2 = 0.108) and 13.2% of the variability in jump height (η2 = 0.132) are explained by category, both with moderate effects. For the running anaerobic sprint test power test, a large effect size was determined for each of the six times, indicating that at least 57.4% of the variability in time is explained by category. Conclusions: Two control groups were identified according to category (Under-13, Under-15, Under-17), revealing that principal component 1 and principal component 2 were significant in the performance of anthropometric variables such as residual mass, bi-styloid diameter, arm span, and residual mass, and physical variables, specifically related to COD-Timer 5 + 5, COD-Timer 5-0-5, and speed.
Background Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare, often misdiagnosed disorder. Epidemiological data on this condition are scarce in Latin America, particularly in Colombia. This study aimed to describe the demographics, clinical features, and treatments of Colombian HAE patients to address data gaps. Methods A web-based survey (Sept 2021–Mar 2023) of Colombian physicians managing HAE patients collected anonymous data on demographics, clinical features, and treatments. Statistical analyses compared patients receiving long-term prophylaxis (LTP) versus those who did not. Results The survey included 42 physicians from 19 Colombian departments, covering 274 HAE patients. Median age at symptom onset was 13 years, with a diagnostic delay of 8 years. Most patients were female (59.85%) and had a family history of HAE (83.58%). Attacks mainly affected peripheral, abdominal, and facial areas; common triggers included stress, trauma, and menstruation. Hospitalization was reported by 46.24% of patients, with23.77% hospitalized in the past year and 4.96% requiring intubation. All had on-demand therapy, mainly icatibant (91.41%). Long-term prophylaxis was prescribed in 52.14% of cases, with danazol (66.67%), tranexamic acid (31.21%), and lanadelumab (17.02%). These patients had longer diagnostic delays and higher hospitalization rates compared to those not receiving prophylaxis (p<0.01 and p=0.01, respectively). Conclusions This study reveals significant diagnostic delays and treatment challenges for HAE in Colombia. Underreporting and geographic disparities suggest an underestimated prevalence. The findings underscore the urgent need for greater awareness, equitable access to therapies, and robust patient registries to address unmet needs and reduce the burden of HAE on affected individuals.
Solubility studies are essential for developing more efficient dosing processes and systems. The solubility of INH in a mixture of PEG 300 (1) + water (2) was evaluated at various temperatures using UV/Vis spectrophotometry and the shaking flask method. Solubility increased by 150% at 288.15 K and 298% at 318.15 K, reflecting the temperature dependence of solubility when transitioning from pure water to pure PEG 300. Generally, the solubility of INH is an endothermic process favoured by entropy. Its affinity increases with PEG 300 proportion in the mixtures, transitioning from an enthalpic to an entropic mechanism as it approaches the pure solvent. Ultimately, it is concluded that PEG 300 acts as an excellent, eco-friendly cosolvent that could help to optimise more sustainable pharmaceutical systems.
