This study presents a novel five-step ensemble machine learning approach to improve predictive accuracy in assessing climate change impacts on inflow patterns and hydropower generation across seven dam basins in West Africa. The methodology integrates precipitation and temperature using the multi-lag approach. An initial pool of fifteen machine learning models were evaluated, and top-performing models were selected for further refinement through iterative ensemble stacking and weak learner elimination. Historical analysis (1983–2014) utilized CHIRPS and CHIRTS datasets. Future projections employed twelve bias-adjusted CMIP6 models and their ensemble mean (EnsMean) under SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5 for the near (2036–2067) and far (2068–2099) futures. Results showed notable improvements in model accuracy and efficiency across layers, with R² and NSE exceeding 0.6 for all inflow simulations and for selected energy simulations (Bagre, Nangbeto, and Taabo). Projections indicated warming up to 4.5°C and spatially heterogeneous precipitation changes across basins and scenarios, with SSP5-8.5 projecting the most pronounced shifts. Inflow reductions are projected to reach up to 24% at Buyo and 13% at Nangbeto, while hydropower output may decline by up to 19% at Nangbeto and 58% at Taabo in the future. Conversely, Manantali and Taabo are projected to experience inflow increases, and Bagre may see energy gains of up to 42% under SSP5-8.5. These findings highlight heightened vulnerability, as well as contrasting opportunities across the region, underscoring the urgent need for adaptive management strategies, such as enhancing hydropower system resilience, diversifying energy portfolios, and integrating renewable sources to mitigate climate risks. Hydropower managers and policymakers must prioritize proactive measures to ensure energy security and sustainable resource management amid changing climatic conditions.
Blockchain adoption in Africa raises critical concerns about energy sustainability and systemic financial risks. In West Africa, digital finance is promoted as a driver of monetary inclusion and sovereignty, yet Proof of Work (PoW) blockchain validation imposes unsustainable energy costs with direct implications for transaction efficiency, monetary stability, and systemic resilience. This study applies an economic modeling framework inspired by the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index (CBECI, 2024), integrating regional data on electricity pricing (Senelec, 2025), monetary aggregates (BCEAO, 2023), and blockchain activity (Chainalysis, 2023). Results show that converting 5% of Senegal’s M1 into PoW validated cryptocurrency transactions would require 144% of national electricity demand, confirming incompatibility with financial stability. Comparative analysis of Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, and Ghana highlights heterogeneous vulnerabilities but a shared unsustainability of PoW. Policy implications emphasize coordinated regulation, technological innovation, and energy governance. Proof of Stake (PoS), reducing energy use by 99.95%, emerges as a credible pathway for sustainable blockchain integration in emerging economies. JEL classification: E22, E44, G11, Q4, O33. This study provides a detailed assessment of groundwater salinization in the Quaternary aquifer of the Samba Dia region, Senegal, using an integrated approach that combines hydrochemical, stable isotopic (δ2H, δ18O), and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) techniques. Fourteen high-resolution ERT profiles, along with comprehensive chemical and isotopic analyses, were performed to identify the main causes of salinity and their spatial distribution. Results show that groundwater salinization in the area is primarily driven by three mechanisms: seawater intrusion, surface salt leaching, and ion exchange. Hydrochemical facies evolution diagrams, ionic ratios, and isotopic signatures helped differentiate marine-influenced zones from inland salinization areas. ERT imaging also mapped the three-dimensional extent and geometry of saline interfaces, confirming zone-specific mixing of seawater and freshwater. The findings indicate that salinization of the coastal aquifer has worsened over the past twenty years, mainly due to human activities and climate variability. This study recommends a sustainable monitoring strategy to support aquifer management, focusing on accurately identifying vulnerable zones and enabling adaptive resource planning in semi-arid Senegal.
