The University of Uyo is located in Uyo, capital of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The university was formerly known as the University of Cross River State. On 1 October 1991 the Federal government of Nigeria established it as a Federal University and the name was changed to the University of Uyo. The University inherited students, staff, academic programmes and the entire facilities of the erstwhile University of Cross River State established by Cross River State in 1983. It must be placed on record that what is today University of Uyo passed through several metamorphoses. It grew from a Teacher's College (TC) to Advanced Teacher's College (ATC), College of Education (COE), which became an affiliate of University of Port Harcourt to run degree programmes to a State University (UNICROSS), and then to its present status in 1991. Academic activities commenced during the 1991/92 academic session. The University of Uyo has 13 faculties, the postgraduate school and the school of continuing Education.Professor Enefiok Essien, is the immediate past Vice-Chancellor. In 2015 the Emir of Hadejia, Adamu Maje was appointed Chancellor.
Density functional theory (DFT) has been used to calculate electrical and photovoltaic properties of diaminonaphthalene and its derivatives, and optimize them. Findings demonstrated that time-dependent DFT investigations employing Coulomb-attenuated hybrid method with polarized split-valence 6-311G (d,p) basis sets and polarizable continuum model were able to predict excitation energies and spectra of the compounds in a reasonable manner. Levels of Energy of Highest Occupied and Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbitals from these compounds can have a positive effect on electron injection and dye renewal processes. Energy gap, short-circuit current density, light-harvesting efficiency, thermodynamic injection driving force and open-circuit photovoltage allowed for qualitative predictions about the reactivity of the different dyes.
Abstract Background Sexual function is an important component of a patient’s life and subjective well-being and is considered as one of the important indices of quality of life. Objective This study sought to assess the prevalence of sexual dysfunction (SD) and its impact on the health related quality of life (HRQoL) of male patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Method It was a cross sectional, descriptive, hospital-based study conducted among adult male diabetes mellitus patients aged between 30 and 75 years, who attended the diabetic outpatient clinics of two selected hospitals in Uyo, southern Nigeria over a twelve month period. Data on the socio-demographic and clinical details of the participants was collected using a semi-structured questionnaire. Data on sexual function and HRQoL of the patients were obtained using the International Index of Erectile Function Questionnaire (IIEF); and the World Health Organization quality of life instrument short version (WHOQOL-BREF) respectively. Results Two hundred and thirteen male patients with T2DM were recruited into the study with majority (88; 41.3%) of them aged between 50 and 59 years. About 71.8% (153) of the participants were identified as having SD. A further evaluation revealed that dysfunction was high in all the domains of sexual function with erectile dysfunction accounting for the most frequent form of SD: 97.4% (95% CI 93.4–99.3%). Our results showed that 85.6% of the patients who reported a poor overall quality of life were those with SD, while only 14.4% of those without SD reported a poor overall quality of life. This difference was statistically significant (p < 0.0001). Conclusion A high prevalence of SD among the patient population studied was observed. Erectile dysfunction was the most common type of SD among the patients. SD significantly impairs the HRQoL of male patients with T2DM. Evaluation of male T2DM patients for SD should form part of routine clinical care with the view of implementing suitable interventions to improve the HRQoL of the patient.
We present the first ab initio density functional theory study of 8-valence electron LaLiX (X = Si, Ge) half-Heusler compounds, investigating their structural, mechanical, electronic, phonon, thermoelectric, and optical properties. Formation energy calculations confirm thermodynamic stability, while Born-Huang criteria and ductility metrics (Pugh's ratio, Cauchy pressure) reveal mechanical stability and deformability. Electronic structure calculations show indirect band gaps of 0.42 eV (LaLiSi) and 0.48 eV (LaLiGe), suggesting semiconductor behavior. Strong optical absorption in the visible region highlights optoelectronic potential. Boltzmann transport calculations predict promising thermoelectric performance, with near-unity figure of merit (ZT) at room temperature, indicating viability for energy conversion. These findings position LaLiSi and LaLiGe as novel multifunctional materials for optoelectronics and thermoelectric applications.
Abstract Background Pediatric cancer care in Nigeria is constrained by several patient- and system-related factors. In line with the World Health Organization’s Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer, this scoping review mapped the Nigerian literature on diagnostic delays, treatment access, clinical outcomes, and related system gaps. Methods We searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, African Journals Online (AJOL), Taylor & Francis Online, and Google Scholar. Eligible studies were in English, published 2005–2025, and included individuals 0–18 years. Findings were synthesized thematically and narratively. Results Twenty-seven tertiary hospital-based studies (n = 2,920) were included, representing all six geopolitical zones. Most were retrospective. Frequently reported malignancies included Burkitt lymphoma, nephroblastoma, retinoblastoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, and acute leukemias. Symptom-to-presentation intervals ranged from 2 to 157 weeks (median 79.5 weeks), and two studies separately reported symptom-to-diagnosis intervals of 13.4 weeks and 54.1 weeks, respectively. Contributors to delayed diagnosis and poor treatment access included low awareness, traditional or alternative care-seeking, initial misdiagnosis, financial barriers, long travel distances, limited insurance coverage, and broader health-system constraints. Using study-reported definitions, treatment completion was 3.3% in one study and 62.8% in another; treatment discontinuation was 6.3% in one study and 64.7% in another; mortality was 6.3% in one study and 45.1% in another; and cohort-level loss to follow-up was 6.6% in one study and 52.6% in another, reaching 81.8% among patients discharged on follow-up chemotherapy in one cohort. Conclusion Pediatric oncology care in Nigeria is marked by prolonged diagnostic pathways, interrupted treatment, and poor reported outcomes. Priorities include standardized referral pathways and integration of childhood cancer into national health insurance. Graphical abstract
The rapid expansion of cloud-native infrastructure and mobile computing has rendered traditional perimeter-based security obsolete, necessitating the development of resilient digital frameworks in alignment with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure). This review article investigates the convergence of two critical paradigms: Zero-Click Attacks, which exploit system components without user interaction, and Zero-Trust Architecture (ZTA), the necessary adaptive defence strategy. Adopting the PRISMA-based systematic review methodology, this study synthesises current literature to provide a critical evaluation of the evolution of zero-click vectors, focusing on critical vulnerabilities within Android system components and media processing libraries. The efficacy of current detection methodologies is evaluated, contrasting the limitations of static analysis with the promise of sandbox-based behavioural monitoring. Furthermore, the paper explores the transition from static ZTA policies to AI-driven enforcement, utilising the SmartTrust framework as a primary case study. This hybrid deep learning approach, integrating Convolutional Neural Networks, Long Short-Term Memory networks, and Reinforcement Learning, demonstrates how real-time, context-aware risk scoring can mitigate invisible threats. Finally, the review outlines open research challenges, specifically the scalability of behavioural analysis and the resilience of AI models against adversarial evasion, proposing a strategic roadmap for AI-native Zero-Trust in hyper-connected environments.
