The Westsächsische Hochschule Zwickau - University of Applied Sciences Zwickau is a vocational university of about 3300 students located in Zwickau. Saxony, Germany. It offers Bachelor's, Master's and traditional German Diplom degrees in four core areas: Technology, Economics, Arts, and Life Sciences. The university also has further campuses in Markneukirchen, Reichenbach im Vogtland and Schneeberg.
Bias in AI systems poses risks of unfair outcomes, especially in sensitive domains such as healthcare. Existing approaches often address fairness only at the algorithmic level, leaving broader system-level safeguards under-specified. This paper presents a model-driven methodology for embedding AI bias requirements into SysML, enabling ethical concerns to be captured alongside functional and technical requirements. The methodology models safeguards such as confidence scoring, fairness evaluators, and human-in-the-loop oversight as firstclass SysML requirements, blocks, and interactions, ensuring traceability and verifiability within model-driven engineering processes. We demonstrate the approach through a smart home case study for early chronic kidney disease (CKD) monitoring, where system diagrams explicitly incorporate bias mitigation elements. This work contributes a structured method for operationalising ethical requirements in AI-enabled systems and lays the foundation for extending model-driven engineering with dedicated ethics modelling patterns.
The Maximum (Minimum) Leaf Spanning Tree problem asks for a spanning tree with the largest (smallest) number of leaves. As spanning trees are often computed using graph search algorithms, it is natural to restrict this problem to the set of search trees of some particular graph search, e.g., find the Breadth-First Search (BFS) tree with the largest number of leaves. We study this problem for Generic Search (GS), BFS and Lexicographic Breadth-First Search (LBFS) using search trees that connect each vertex to its first neighbor in the search order (first-in trees) just like the classic BFS tree. In particular, we analyze the complexity of these problems, both in the classical and in the parameterized sense. Among other results, we show that the minimum and maximum leaf problems are in for the first-in trees of GS, BFS and LBFS when parameterized by the number of leaves in the tree. However, when these problems are parameterized by the number of internal vertices of the tree, they are 𝖶[1] -hard for the first-in trees of GS, BFS and LBFS.
