Twin-screw extrusion with its capacity to handle high-viscosity polymers can be used to create a continuous emulsification process without solvents but presently this approach is challenging to make stable due to the uncertain role of mixing. To address this challenge, the influence of mixing was studied by examining several process- and material-related factors in this work. From the results, the kinetics of interfacial area growth between the polymer and water phases was described in terms of nucleation, propagation and termination stages, with the latter stage ideally corresponding to the dilution zone where phase inversion occurs. The nucleation stage was found to be strongly dependent on early water solubilization in the polymer, controlled by the acid number of the polyester, to determine the initial water fraction feasibly dispersed within this oil-like phase prior to the dilution zone (referred to as the emulsion boundary). Propagation was influenced by surfactant concentration and strongly affected by residence time, with a longer dispersion zone or lower feed rate allowing for higher cumulative shear strain and a greater chance to completely emulsify the polymer. Ideally, these kinetic stages correspond with the physical zones of the machine else varying degree of emulsification are shown to result.Highlights Early water solublization in the polyester is dependent on the acid number Higher residence time impacted mixing more than shear rate Water fraction dispersible in the melt was strongly affected by mixing Emulsion boundary was adjustable by amount of mixing and surfactant
Solvent-free extrusion emulsification (SFEE) is a recently developed process for producing submicron particles of high viscosity polymers using a twin-screw extruder without hazardous solvents. Its rate dependency on mixing for catastrophic phase inversion makes the process knowingly sensitive to a variety of variables, included the manner by which it is started up. This study examined how transient dynamics at the beginning affects steady-state operations by varying the time for the surfactant-containing feed stream to reach its setpoint rate into the process, to better understand the mechanism of SFEE. The results showed that the path taken to reaching the setpoint conditions (i.e. transition time) determined process stability and whether successful emulsification occurred, not the actual setpoint conditions chosen. Combining particle size and residence time measurements with prior studies’ data related to the rate of reactions benefiting interfacial growth between the polymer/water phases and inline rheological findings, this unusual transient sensitivity was attributed to insufficient surface-active species present creating a persistent segregated regime of the flow field in the first half of the dispersion zone that exhibits an unstable phase morphology. Returning to the desired operating window was only possible once this segregated regime was purged from the process. The study offers a continuous processing perspective to this phenomenon previously observable in batch for high viscosity oil phase systems.
Emotion&speech-based human facial animation technique can be considered as a useful application in many artificial intelligent systems. Given a speech signal, the recognizer output a sequence of the phoneme and emotion pairs. Thereby, we calculate the sequence of viseme and expression pairs accordingly, which are subsequently transformed to a consistent and synchronous video describing facial animation. This article introduces a novel facial animation technique that can intelligently generates real human face animation videos by leveraging an emotional speech. More specifically, we first extract acoustic features sufficiently discriminative to the emotion and phoneme pairs by deploying a multi-label feature selector. And the corresponding sequence of phoneme and emotion pairs are computed. Then, we propose a low-rank active learning paradigm for discovering multiple key facial frames that can best represent the above phoneme and emotion pairs in the feature subspace. Theoretically, the designed active learning is highly tolerant to video frame noises. Subsequently, we associate each phoneme and emotion pair with a key facial frame, based on which the well-known morphing technique fits the associated key facial frames to a smooth animated facial video. It focuses on generating multiple transitional facial frames between pairwise temporally adjacent key frames. Experiments have demonstrated that the synthesized facial videos look real, smooth, and synchronous with different male/female speeches.
