Maroun proposes an investigation of how Twitter (the platform now rebranded as X) can serve as a tool of resistance to mainstream media's power to drive narratives and influence public discourse. Through a close analysis of French Afrofeminist Rokhaya Diallo's 21 October 2020 post (tweet) and its quote tweets in defence of her appearance on 28 minutes on ARTE, he suggests a novel way of understanding how social media users interact with mainstream media narratives and mobilise platforms to circulate counternarratives of resistance. Her tweet, which has garnered over 1.5 million views, both provides her with a platform to counteract injurious claims and enables Twitter/X users to engage in remembering the 28 minutes appearance and debat. Drawing on Michael Rothberg's concept of multidirectional memory, Maroun shows how the various functions of Twitter/X (reposts/retweets, quote tweets and comments) disrupt dominant media narratives. This article argues that Twitter/X affords users a multimedia, dialogical approach to constructing memory.
