
Aphthous ulcers are common oral lesions that cause pain and discomfort. In traditional medicine, various medicinal plants have been employed to treat these ulcers due to their analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and tissue-regenerative properties. These remedies typically have fewer side effects than conventional chemical drugs and may help prevent lesion recurrence. This review systematically analyzed Iranian traditional medicine texts alongside peer-reviewed scientific studies from domestic and international databases. Medicinal plants reported as effective for aphthous ulcers were identified, and their pharmacological properties including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, analgesic, and tissue-regenerative effects were examined. spp., Salvia officinalis, Cichorium intybus, Vitis vinifera, and others. The most frequently studied plant families were Lamiaceae, Asteraceae, Rosaceae, and Fabaceae, with fruits, leaves, and flowers being the most commonly evaluated parts. These plants exhibit multiple pharmacological activities that promote healing, reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and may help limit the recurrence of oral lesions. Medicinal plants provide promising complementary strategies for managing aphthous ulcers due to their low side-effect profiles and multiple therapeutic mechanisms. Integrating these plants with conventional treatments could improve clinical and safety.
The Uca crab (Ucides cordatus) is one of the most widely consumed crustaceans in Brazil, with artisanal harvesting methods playing a crucial role in its incorporation into new food products. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the quality of canned Uca crab. After approval from the ethics committee at UFS, Uca crab samples were evaluated for microbiological contamination (Salmonella sp., coagulase-positive Staphylococcus, and E. coli) and physicochemical properties (moisture, pH, acidity, and TBARS). Two formulations of canned Uca crab were developed: F1 (crab in confit tomato sauce with spices) and F2 (crab in olive oil sauce with spices). These formulations were assessed microbiologically (Salmonella sp. and E. coli), sensorially (using 80 untrained panelists for acceptance, purchase intention, and preference), and physicochemically (moisture, pH, acidity, and TBARS). Additionally, the stability of the canned products was evaluated at room temperature. The raw crab samples showed no microbiological contamination, although variations in physicochemical properties between batches indicated a lack of standardization in the preparation process. Both canned formulations showed no microbial contamination, with similar sensory preferences, purchase intentions, and acceptability, except for F2, which had a better appearance. F1 demonstrated higher moisture, pH, and acidity levels, along with lower lipid oxidation, which may be attributed to the specific ingredients used. No microbial proliferation occurred within 30 days, although signs of deterioration were observed. The Uca crab cans exhibited good microbiological and sensory quality, but their physicochemical characteristics and artisanal processing may have contributed to some deterioration.
This study investigated the zootechnical performance of Ross PP broiler chickens with featherless necks, fed diets containing different levels of apparent metabolizable energy (AME) and digestible lysine (DL). 640 animals were used, distributed in 32 boxes measuring 1.5 by 1.5 meters, each containing 20 chickens (10 females and 10 males). The study lasted 42 days, with half of the animals being weighed daily during the first 7 days, followed by total weekly weighings. Comparative analysis of the results revealed that variations in AME and DL levels did not significantly influence broiler performance throughout the study period, but they did exhibit different viability, weight gain, feed conversion, and other relevant growth parameters.
To evaluate the effect of intrauterine clindamycin and gentamicin antibiotic injection after insemination to improve fertility in cows with a history of endometritis, a total of 200 dairy cows from 4 farms were selected and used in two groups such as control and antibiotic groups. In the treatment group, a combination of clindamycin and gentamicin was injected once into the uterus 24 hours after artificial insemination. They were examined for pregnancy in a period of 120 days after insemination with antibiotics or, in case of infertility, for discharge, uterine consistency, and the effect of intrauterine antibiotic injection on subsequent inseminations. The degree of endometritis based on the severity of infection and milk production was assumed to be constant in both the Antibiotic and control groups. The fertility percentage and overall pregnancy rate, and the interval from insemination with antibiotics to pregnancy were compared in the two groups using the chi-square test and the T-test. According to the data, the overall pregnancy rate in the antibiotic-treated group 24 hours after insemination was increased and more than control group. Considering the first or numerous calving cows in both groups, the fertility rate in the multiparous calving cows with antibiotic injection was higher than the control group. Data revealed that fertility rates at the third and higher insemination periods were higher in both the antibiotic treatment and control groups. Additionally, the evaluation of the interval between days of parturition and insemination with antibiotics in the treatment and control groups showed that there were significant differences in the birth status of antibiotic-treated groups and better and natural birth status compared to the control. In conclusion, we may have demonstrated that intrauterine clindamycin and gentamicin antibiotic injection after insemination improved the fertility and overall pregnancy rate, and also natural birth status in cows with a history of endometritis.
