This work will approach from a critical and interdisciplinary point of view the work of Sancho en la Guerra (1885) by the author Lucas Lucio Venegas. This story, difficult to catalog, will be used to reflect the impact that the Guerra del Pacífico had on the Chilean soldiers and the civilians, by using the character of “Sancho” as an interlocutor. In this text themes such as antiwarism, criticism of the Generals, as well as a clear political intention that overlaps through literary resources, are revealed. We believe it’s necessary to put into consideration these aspects, which undoubtedly reflect a principle of counter-discourse, an serve as a denunciation of the national-state account of the war phenomenon.
One of the most significant bellicose events of the Viceroyal period in the Kingdom of New Galicia, which today is Western Mexico, was the Mixton War (1541-1542), fought by some groups of Indigenous people from the Northern part of New Galicia, among them the Caxcans, also known as Teules Chichimec. These were moments of tension and instability that brought about a great military mobilization, forming the largest Novo-Hispanic army headed by Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza, who personally went to the area in conflict, after the death of Pedro de Alvarado in one of the battles of this insurrection, an unfortunate event that took place. This war is documented in the historical sources with large gaps in their information, among the details are announced the different spaces where bloody battles took place, in some cases with detailed descriptions, but other narrations are extremely vague, which is why several questions arise respect to the location of the places of the clashes. On this occasion, the discussion on these spaces offers their location following the methodology of battlefield archaeology: revision of historical accounts and cartography, landscape analysis, and archaeological prospection.
: Battlefield archeology in Latin America has had growth and development in the last 25 years. In the particular case of Mexico, there is more and more research on this topic. The Mexican Revolution was a movement that began in 1910 because of injustices, polarization, the concentration of wealth in a few, and social inequality. In this armed movement a series of battles, seizures, raids and skirmishes occurred that formed the bloodiest civil war in the history of this country. In the north of México, mainly, the revolutionary insurgency formed the División del Norte headed by Francisco Villa who fought the federal army in different war events, one of them was the Toma de Torreón in the Comarca Lagunera in March-April 1914. In This work applied the theory and methodology of battlefield archeology on the La Pila hill, located in the city of Gómez Palacio, Durango.
Through the analysis of historical documents such as plans, lithographs and descriptions of combatants, this research explores the characterization of the fortifications built by the Mexican army to defend the city of Monterrey, Nuevo León during the Mexican-United States War (1846-1848) with the aim of understanding what its design and functionality was in the context of the conflict, to enrich the knowledge of this important event. The analysis of this type of elements provides a more complete vision of defensive tactics and contributes to knowledge about the evolution of military architecture in response to armed conflicts, opening the door to future comparative research with other battlefields related to this stage crucial part of Mexican history.
This multidisciplinary study examines the Battle of Ahualulco, a key event during the Reform War, through the analysis of archaeological, documentary, and computational sources. Developed by the Laboratory of Structures and Social Dynamics (LEDS) at the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí, this research seeks a deeper understanding of the conflict by contrasting historical sources with material evidence and spatial analysis. The study highlights the importance of this battle as a decisive moment for the conservatives, as it halted the liberal advance toward Mexico City. Through the integration of computational tools and spatial analysis, the research reveals discrepancies between traditional narratives and archaeological evidence, particularly concerning the strategy that secured the conservative victory. The significance of controlling Divisadero Hill, a strategic point that decisively influenced the course of the battle, is emphasized, while conventional narratives of the confrontation are critically reexamined. This approach allows for the formulation of alternative hypotheses and offers a critical reinterpretation of the events, underscoring the importance of the landscape in military planning and the commanders' ability to adapt to a challenging environment.
Atalaya is a town in the Magdalena district, in Buenos Aires province, which developed, an industrial zone related to the production of leather and salted meat between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The characteristics of this coastal area and its stream provided favorable conditions for the establishment of the salt industry. A total of six salting plants were built on both banks of the Bu & ntilde;irigo stream during the years 1871 to 1877, one of which is the "El Uno" salting plant, established by Repetto y Cia. in 1872. On this paper, we present our research findings following our work at the Saladero Repetto y Cia. site, based on the integration of different lines of evidence. We include the survey and mapping of the archaeological structures and their integration with the analysis of a diverse corpus of documents from different repositories. These data is articulated with information from interviews with the local inhabitants regarding the significance of the town's industrial past.
At the request of the National Commission of Monuments, Sites and Historic Assets of the Nation, in coordination with the Municipality of Ensenada and the National University of Rosario, the enhancement of the Fuerte Barrag & aacute;n National Historic Monument in the town of Ensenada, province of Buenos Aires, was carried out. For such purposes, the archaeological and heritage intervention of the site was carried out, in which archaeologists, teachers and students of the anthropology career of the National Universities of Rosario and La Plata, employees of the Municipality of Ensenada, museologists, restorers and public officials, among others, participated. From this phenomenon, mechanisms of construction of collective memory were developed centered on the links between material culture, space, official history and national identity. This work aims to present the results of the enhancement and the analysis of social representations around the strategies of dissemination, custody and conservation of the site considering the perspectives of the different actors involved. Actions aimed at appropriation and recovery are part of the processes of reaffirmation of the identity of social groups, who construct representations about the archaeological site.
