This article examines the relationship between cosmology and theology, addressing the question of whether their proper relation should be one of independence, dialogue, or integration. The point of departure is Ian Barbour’s typology of science–religion relations (conflict, independence, dialogue, integration), with particular emphasis on the model of independence. The main reference point is the position of Georges Lemaître—a Catholic priest and cosmologist—who advocated a clear separation between scientific and theological discourse in order to avoid misunderstandings arising from a confusion of epistemological domains. His views are largely consistent with principles developed in the philosophy of science, especially the so-called principle of epistemological and methodological homogeneity, which follows from the widely accepted autonomy of the sciences, philosophy, and theology. At the level of subject research, cosmology and theology should therefore remain independent. However, this independence does not entail isolation, as openness in the form of inspiring dialogue is both possible and desirable. At the meta-subject (philosophical) level, a dialogical engagement should be undertaken to seek answers to fundamental human questions. This dialogue should aim at constructing a coherent vision of reality as a synthesis of various types of knowledge. At the highest (metaphilosophical, axiological) level, the epistemic value of the constructed worldviews should be assessed in order to determine which worldview offers the most coherent and explanatory understanding of reality.
Private property rights and evictions are two sides of the same coin. You can’t have one without the other. If you really own something, anything, you have the right to evict trespassers. If you cannot evict them, then, to that extent, you do not fully, really, own the property in question. The present paper will apply this insight to abortion, regarding the pro-life, pro-choice and evictionism positions on this matter.
This paper aims to reconstruct and analyse the notion of the existence of the external world elaborated by George Berkeley. In order to accomplish this task, I will clarify the notion of existence as regards physical reality following the Berkeleian New Principle. I will examine the motivation for emphasising the importance of the notion of existence in respect of its metaphysical assumptions and possible influences by the closest metaphysical context to Berkeley’s philosophy. The metaphysical exegesis of Berkeley’s work helps to better understand the ambiguity connected to the degree of the external world’s mind dependence in his view. In other words, it helps to understand in what sense the world might be understood in psychologistic terms as a part of the existence of the mind perceiving.
Widać to wyraźnie w analizowanych przykładach z powieści Sándora Máraiego, Ericha Marii Remarque’a i Josepha Rotha.
In his text “Evictionism, Pro-Life and Pro-Choice” (this issue), Walter Block defends evictionism, which he presents as an alternative stance on abortion to the pro-life and pro-choice views. In this text, I point out the shortcomings of this stance. First, I try to show that evictionism is not in fact an intermediate position between pro-life and pro-choice positions. Next, I point out the problems that evictionism faces in relation to the techniques used today to perform abortions. I then discuss the counterintuitive consequences of evictionism, which stem from its underlying belief in the sanctity of property rights.
This short essay is a response to Walter Block’s “evictionist” alternative to the “pro-life” and “pro-choice” arguments over abortion. It addresses Block’s use of metaphors in the ongoing debate surrounding reproductive freedom and abortion in contemporary liberal democracies. It focuses specifically on Block’s libertarian framing of the pregnant woman as a “landlord” and the fetus as an “intruder” or “squatter”. The essay argues that these images are problematic and unlikely to help advance debate on reproductive liberty, abortion in particular, beyond its current impasse.
Tekst rekonstruuje kluczowe pojęcia leibnizjańskiej dynamiki, w szczególności koncepcję vis activa primitiva i jej rolę w wyznaczaniu zarówno porządku fenomenalnego, jak i metafizycznego.
This paper critically evaluates the libertarian theory of evictionism as a proposed solution to the moral and legal problem of abortion. Evictionism, defended by Walter Block, attempts to reconcile pro-life and pro-choice intuitions by distinguishing between eviction (removal of the fetus) and killing, grounding the permissibility of abortion in absolute property rights and bodily autonomy. The paper systematically examines Block’s defence of evictionism, addressing key claims such as those about the status of the fetus as a trespasser, the absoluteness of property rights, and the acceptability of lethal eviction in early pregnancy. Drawing on thought experiments and the principle of proportionality, I argue that evictionism fails to account for moral responsibility toward dependent beings and leads to ethically implausible conclusions. Furthermore, I show that evictionism contradicts the proviso Block himself accepts, ultimately concluding that the theory is internally inconsistent.
The present paper argues that Professor Walter Block’s evictionism is not a solution to the abortion dilemma. Being a response to Professor Block’s recent article published in the current issue of the journal, my piece submits (in some respects once again) that evictionism should be rejected because—contrary to what it claims—(1) the unwanted fetus is not a trespasser, (2) there are insufficient reasons to support the premise that our life and thus our concomitant self-ownership status begins at the moment of conception, (3) evictionism entails positive duties, (4) evictionism conflicts with the homestead principle, (5) instead of being an original solution to the abortion dilemma, evictionism collapses into a well-known doctrine of doing and allowing, and (6) eviction is not the gentlest way possible of securing the woman’s rights.
In the article I reconstruct the essential terms of the Stoic semiotics. I believe a careful philological analysis seems to be a key for elucidating statements appearing in sources which commonly are regarded as unclear or self-contradictory, and for bringing to light a highly original theory of reference, with special regard to the notion of lekton (meaning of a sentence). Since the Stoics quite consistently differentiate between two synonymous verbs hyphestanai and hyparkhein, I propose to introduce two modes of existence: “dependent on phantasia” and “dependent on the somaton”, respectively. Given the analysis of axiomata (proposition) and some other detailed concepts, it becomes possible to reconstruct an interesting, ontologically economic theory of a great explanatory value, whereby true propositions remain tightly connected to the real world, whereas false propositions entail a looser relationship, but the existence of such propositions in the world is sufficiently corroborated.
I am very grateful to Professors Artur Szutta, Łukasz Dominiak, Paul Wojda and Piotr Lipski for commenting on my essay “Evictionism, Pro-life and Pro-choice,” published in this issue. I have been writing about evictionism as an alternative to the well-known attempts to solve the conundrum of abortion for many decades. I have not made much headway in publicizing this viewpoint to the present date. It is my hope that these four splendid essays will rectify that deficiency. More important, the reactions of these four eminent philosophers have forced me to look far more deeply into my own writings on this subject. None of the four have yet seen their way clear to embrace this viewpoint. It is my hope that this response of mine will set them on this path.
Dlatego też opisuję to zagadnienie z uwzględnieniem zagadnienia wartości wiedzy, definicji wiedzy, problemu sceptycyzmu i struktur wiedzy, zagadnienia celu poznawczego, praktycznych uwarunkowań atrybucji wiedzy, problemu etyki przekonań, przede wszystkim kwestię odpowiedzialności epistemicznej i woluntaryzmu przekonaniowego.
Jacoba Böhmego, Carla Gustava Carusa, Friedricha Schelling i Karla von Hartmanna.
The question of whether human beings are more prone to do evil or good is typically framed in psychological terms, focusing on human predispositions to determine whether “evil” tendencies outweigh “good” ones, or vice versa. This approach has given rise to a variety of views on human nature, ranging from the two classical extremes—the Hobbesian view, which holds that humans are inherently evil, to the Rousseauian view, which sees them as intrinsically good—to more nuanced positions situated between these poles. In this paper, a different line of inquiry is proposed: instead of approaching the issue from the perspective of the subject (i.e., human predispositions), it is examined from the standpoint of the object—the nature of good and evil themselves. The thesis is advanced that if human beings are indeed more inclined to do evil than good, the explanation may lie not only in their psychology, but also in the very structure and character of good and evil—specifically, in the fact that good actions are more difficult to perform than bad ones. The nature of this difficulty is also explored in the paper by analyzing both the external and internal aspects of human actions.
Następnie streszczono część historyczną i współczesną monografii. W zakresie współczesności omówiono modele przywództwa transakcyjnego, transformacyjnego, służebnego, autentycznego i charyzmatycznego.
