The roles of teachers and students in English Language Teaching (ELT) are inextricably shaped by underlying philosophical orientations. This literature review investigates how major educational philosophies, including essentialism, progressivism, constructivism, humanism, perennialism, reconstructionism, and critical pedagogy, inform the conceptualization and enactment of teacher and student roles in ELT classrooms. Drawing on a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of eight peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2020 and 2025, this study identifies thematic patterns that reflect the philosophical undercurrents shaping pedagogical practice.
This article aims to present the discussion about the definition of Science Fiction as a genre, including older studies that enable a deeper understanding of the current theory. In addition, I revisit Patrick Parrinder's (1980) initial assertion that Science Fiction should not only be understood as a genre, but also as a mode, which can facilitate the discussion about various works that flirt with science-fictional aspects without really delving into them. Finally, a discussion about the British New Wave as a crisis of the genre is made, to support the theory that Science Fiction should be regarded both as a genre and a mode.
This article examines Zeitgeist, a collaboratively authored German language textbook produced in Brazilian public universities, as a decolonial pedagogical intervention and model of locally grounded materials design. Based on critical document analysis and a reconstruction of the collaborative workflow, the study shows how decolonial principles shaped planning, writing, piloting, revision, and multimodal production. It highlights thematic organization, pluricentric phonetics, authentic texts, participatory authorship, and diverse voices and accents as resistance to Eurocentric textbook models. By presenting this workflow as adaptable, the article offers guidance for Global South contexts working with limited funding and uneven infrastructure. Zeitgeist thus emerges as an epistemic praxis that redefines whose knowledge shapes language education.
This article reflects on how racially and economically marginalized groups can appropriate sociolinguistic resources historically dominated by elites, such as English. By reconfiguring legitimized domains of circulation and the functions of these resources within structures of domination, members of these groups can redirect them toward emancipatory purposes. Based on the discursive practices of three Black Brazilian feminists - Marielle Franco, Anielle Franco, and Pamella Passos - and especially on their intertextual engagements with Concei & ccedil;& atilde;o Evaristo's notion of escreviv & ecirc;ncia, I discuss how English and other semiotic resources, such as institutional literacies, have been reinscribed by them into alternative, affective, and collective domains. Rather than seeking passive inclusion in legitimized spaces, these intellectuals construct insurgent forms of presence, promote critical intrusion into hegemonic domains, and reposition language as a practice of survival, listening, and hope. Rooted in the Brazilian context, these reconfigurations also resonate with transnational experiences of contesting linguistic colonialism.
Auto/biographical writings by authors who have become caregivers for people with dementias, such as Alzheimer's disease, have been published since the 1980s, particularly in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe. Similar Brazilian texts, however, have begun to appear with greater frequency only over the past decade. This study seeks to provide the first comprehensive survey of all works of this kind published in Brazil, with attention to the referential and representative nature of the corpus in relation to statistical data on caregivers of people with dementia. Accordingly, we will examine issues of gender, location and conditions of care, race or ethnicity, and social class of the authors and their relatives, along with a brief commentary on the paratextual resources found in the works. We will then propose two primary modes for classifying caregiver narratives-a tragic mode and a pragmatic mode-in order to discuss, in a more pedagogical manner, the formal configurations of this subgenre and the key questions raised in similar texts, such as the presumption of identity loss in the person with dementia and the ethical tensions involved in narrating and reflecting upon the burdens of the caregiving experience without reproducing culturally pervasive stigmas and stereotypes surrounding dementia and ageing, nor violating the privacy of someone incapable of understanding or consenting to their participation in the process. Finally, we will undertake a more detailed analysis of Elaine Tavares's Boa noite, seu Tavares (2025), which will serve both to exemplify the characteristics of the two modes discussed above and to offer a glance into the ethical/social paradigm of life writing. Along the way, we will seek to systematize the main theoretical contributions that have addressed similar objects, with the aim of facilitating the further development of these questions in future research.
Emojis are graphic representations used to convey an idea, emotion or feeling. These symbols are very popular in online communications such as social networks, SMS and instant communication applications such as WhatsApp. The present work reports the student experience in an interactive written activity carried out in a rural municipal school in Minas Gerais, simulating a conversation through WhatsApp. The objective of this paper is to investigate, in a class of 10 students of Elementary School II (9th year), the use of emojis according to their function, following Yus (2014). After the activity, data were compiled, and a qualitative analysis of emoji use was performed. The results indicate that most students are unaware of the function of emojis and use them arbitrarily, not adapting them to the text they produce through the association of writing and image.
Kumaravadivelu (2016) states that non-native foreign language teachers are subaltern intellectuals who must act collectively to undo the knots that bind them to hegemonic thinking. With this in mind, in this article, we present an English language teaching unit for high school students, based on the concepts of the grammar of decoloniality (Kumaravadivelu, 2016), intercultural linguistic education (Mendes, 2022) and critical sociointeractional literacy (Tilio, 2019). The lessons that are a part of the teaching unit are based on videos that address negative stereotypes about the African continent, developed by the Nigerian influencer Charity Ekezie. Thus, aspects that address issues such as power imbalance and subalternity, issues that we can relate to the concept of coloniality, in addition to aspects linked to reflexivity and the development of critical consciousness, are approached during the proposed activities. These subjects encompass the following reflections: (i) how stereotypes about subjects who are in a subordinate condition can be questioned and deconstructed, and (ii) how the practice of foreign language classrooms itself can strengthen colonized conceptions, such as that of a native speaker, being reproduced through imported teaching materials, among other artifacts that replicate ideologies of hegemonic groups.
This paper investigates the relationship between language education and decoloniality, with a focus on teacher agency in the use of teaching materials. Framed within the engaged Applied Linguistics (Souto Maior, 2022), it understands English teaching as a space for the unlearning of social structures (Fabr & iacute;cio, 2006). This qualitative study analyzes Unit 4 of the textbook "Moderna Plus" (Almeida, 2020), approved by PNLD 2021 (Brasil, 2021), which addresses social justice but presents limitations in its treatment of racism. The findings indicate that teacher agency is essential to expand the proposed discussions and foster more critical practices. The study concludes that ongoing teacher education and the use of supplementary materials strengthen language education as a space for social transformation.
This paper analyzes the music video The Body Electric (2014), by the band Hurray for the Riff Raff, as a cultural artifact that engages decolonial multiliteracies practices. Grounded in the work of Duboc and Menezes de Souza (2021), I define decolonial multiliteracies as critical meaning-making practices that integrate multiple languages and media to destabilize colonial structures of power, knowledge, and representation. I argue that the work performs a "grammar of resistance" by subverting the naturalization of gender-based violence in popular culture. Drawing on Judith Butler's (2018) theory of performativity, I examine how the song and video reinscribe discourses of violence, creating cracks in their normative logic. The intermedial reference (Rajewsky, 2012) to Botticelli's painting The Birth of Venus is analyzed through the lens of coloniality critique, challenging Eurocentric representations as discussed by Walter Mignolo (2017) and Maria Lugones (2020). Finally, I propose the analysis of the video as a pedagogical gesture toward decolonial language education, weaving together meaning-making practices that aim to dismantle architectures of oppression and insurgent dissident epistemes, thus materializing social justice in the fabric of the sensible.
