This study investigated whether anxiety mediates the relationship between life satisfaction and compulsive buying. A quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional study was conducted with a convenience sample of 328 Brazilian adults aged 18 to 56 years (M = 24.7, SD = 6.33; 51.8 % male). Participants completed the Satisfaction with Life Scale (α = .85), the State Anxiety subscale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (α = .91), and the Richmond Compulsive Buying Scale (α = .88). Descriptive and inferential analyses were conducted using IBM SPSS 24.0. Mediation was tested using PROCESS Model 4, with 5,000 bootstrap resamples. The results showed a significant negative relationship between life satisfaction and compulsive buying (B = –.10, p = .038), a negative association between life satisfaction and anxiety (B = –.21, p < .001), and a positive association between anxiety and compulsive buying (B = .50, p < .01). The indirect effect of life satisfaction on compulsive buying through anxiety was significant (b = –.11; 95 % CI: –.16, –.05). These findings indicate that lower life satisfaction increases anxiety, which in turn predicts compulsive buying. Taken together, the results highlight the importance of addressing emotional well-being and anxiety in individuals with low life satisfaction to reduce the risk of compulsive buying behavior.
Religious andspiritual aspects have relevant implications for mental health. This studyevaluatedthe positive and negative effects of numinous variables on psychological distress in a sample of 367 Colombian adults. Using an explanatory design, the Assessment of Spirituality and Religious Sentiments (ASPIRES) was applied to measure religious participation and crisis, while religious orientation was assessed with the Age Universal I-E Scale-12, emotions toward God with the Emotions Toward God Questionnaire, and psychological distress with the General Health Questionnaire-12. A structural equation model was constructed to explain psychological distress based on the functional relationships established between religious involvement, religious crisis, intrinsic religious orientation, and positive and negative emotions toward God (chi 2/gl = 2.07, RMSEA = .054, CFI = .993, TLI = .978, NFI = .986, NNFI = .978, GFI = .993, AGFI = .950, SRMR = .019). A second multigroup model compared the effects of variables on practicing and non-practicing believers (chi 2/gl = 2.16, RMSEA = .080, CFI = .972, TLI = .915, NFI = .951, NNFI = .915, GFI = .989, AGFI = .928, SRMR = .032). The results suggest differential mechanisms of influence on distress; moreover, these mechanisms vary by believer type. The findings of the study offer important contributions for the design of strategies of social intervention and at the level of psychological therapy, considering the role of the numinous on mental health.
The objective of this study was to analyse how modifications to traditional sports games (TSG) adapted to the COVID-19 standard affected primary school pupils' emotional experiences, particularly by gender. A total of 93 primaryschool students participated. The Games and Emotion Scale for Children was usedto assess the type and intensityofemotion. After implementingCOVID-19 measures inTSG, participants experienced positive emotions more intensely than negative emotions. Individual games showed a tendency towards higher values of positive emotions than the other games with higher motor interaction. As for negative emotions, cooperation-opposition games elicited more negative emotional appraisal. No significant differences in the experience of positive and negative emotions were observed when comparing competitive and non-competitive games, nor did they differ by sex. The results revealed that changes to the games did not alter the emotional experience, indicating that physical education practitioners can modify the games' structural and functional aspects to achieve other pedagogical objectives without affecting students' emotional behaviour.
Adolescence is marked by increased risk-taking. Dual Systems Models explain this stage as an imbalance between the socioemotional reward and cognitive control systems. This study applies such models to explore neurocognitive aspects of contraceptive method (CM) use in adolescents. We analyzed trajectories of risk propensity, self-regulation, and consideration of future consequences (CFC), controlling for sex and socioeconomic status, in a sample of adolescents from Montevideo (Uruguay). A simple prospective longitudinal panel design was used with two time points, T1 (314 cases) and T2 (49 cases), separated by 20 months. Behavioral tasks (BART, Stoplight, Tower of London), the CFC scale, and questionnaires were used. A decrease in risk propensity and immediacy was observed, aligningwiththe inverted U-shapeddevelopmentofthe rewardsystem. No changes were found in self-regulation or CFC-Future, consistent with models proposing a plateau in the development of the cognitive control system. Decreased risk propensitywas associated with lower use of ineffective CM at last sexual intercourse. These findings highlightthe importance of understanding neurocognitive developmentand its implications foradolescentsexual and reproductive health, particularly in Global South contexts.
This study aimed to conduct the cultural adaptation and analysis of the factorial structure and reliability of the reduced version of the organizational climate test FOCUS-93 in a sample of Colombian employees. The test was administeredto 569 participants, with a mean age of33.98years (SD = 11.14, range:18-68years), including240 men (42.40%) and 326 women (57.60%), with three missing data points (0.53%), and an average reported job tenure of 5.15 years (SD = 6.04). The cultural adaptation was carried out through expert evaluation, and validation was performed usingfactor analysis. The findings indicate thatthe questionnaire should be expandedto14 items and support the original model composed of four dimensions (support, innovation, orientation, and rules), as these showed the best factorial fit indices (CFI = 0.99, RMSEA = 0.04) compared to other proposed models. In addition, adequate indicators of structural fit (CFI = 0.99, TLI = 0.99, RMSEA = 0.04) were observed in both unidimensional and orthogonal structures, as well as in a second-order model. The test also showed favorable values in terms of internal consistency, supporting its reliability in both the total assessmentand in itssubscales. Finally, theoretical aspects related to the measurement of organizational climate and its dimensions were analyzed in order to provide a comprehensive view of the instrument's validity and robustness.
The aim of this study was to integrate and analyse recent research on risk and protective factors associated with sextingamongschool-agedchildren andadolescents under18years of age. A narrative reviewwasconductedfollowing SANRA criteria using the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Fourteen empirical studies published between 2020 and 2023 that addressed factors associated with sexting in school populations were selected, and a thematic analysis alongside a qualitative assessment of methodological quality was performed. The findings were organised into five categories: demographic and socioeconomic factors, psychological factors, peer dynamics, contextual factors, and the influence of technology. Specifically, increasing age, belonging to sexual or ethnic minority groups, lowself-control, peer pressure, and dysfunctional family dynamics were associatedwith greater involvement in sexting, particularly when it occurred under pressure or without consent. In contrast, parental monitoring, stable family structure, school connectedness, religious involvement, and personal strengths such as authenticity and a sense of justice emerged as protective factors. Sexting is a complex phenomenon influenced by multiple factors that interact at different levels of the developmental ecosystem. Evidence-based prevention is therefore required, particularly within the school environment.
There is considerable discussion in the scientific literature about whether perfectionism is beneficial, harmful, or unnecessary. The Scale of Perfectionism and Excellencism (SCOPE) was developed to assess the pursuit of perfection as opposed to the pursuit of excellence. This study aimed to investigate the validity indicators of the internal, external, convergent, and discriminant structures, as well as the reliability of the SCOPE for Brazilian adults. Two cross-sectional studies with convenience samples were conducted. The results of the confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses in Study 1 (n = 1,814) indicated suitable fit indices for the scale (χ2 = 600.585, df = 208, p < .001, χ2 /df = 2.887, CFI = .984, TLI = .982, RMSEA = .059 (90 % CI [.056, .062])), suggesting a two-factor structure (perfectionism and excellencism). Low positive correlations were observed between perfectionism/excellencism and general psychiatric symptoms, and a low negative correlation between perfectionism and life satisfaction. Perfectionism was a negative predictor of life satisfaction, whereas excellencism was a positive predictor of both psychiatric symptoms and life satisfaction. Study 2 (n = 432) supports the convergent validity of perfectionism and discriminant validity of excellencism with Hewitt and Flett’s Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale. When controlling for perfectionism, excellencism remains positively associated with self-oriented perfectionism (SOP), but the correlation with socially prescribed perfectionism (SPP) disappears. Controlling for excellencism, the association between perfectionism and SOP and SPP remains significant, though somewhat smaller in magnitude. This study provides favorable evidence for using SCOPE among Brazilian adults and valuable insights into the constructs of excellencism and perfectionism.
The family-work interface involves both negative and positive processes. According to the Work-Family Resources Model, contextual family demands tend to generate family-work conflict, while contextual family resources foster family-work enrichment. Building on this framework, the present study focused on the direct effects of family demands and family social support on positive psychological functioning at work, examining also the mediating role of core self-evaluation and the moderating role of Brazilian jeitinho’s creativity. The jeitinho is a culturally specific construct in Brazil, and in this study, we considered only its creative and adaptive dimension, which involves flexible thinking and socially acceptable problem-solving strategies. This quantitative study was developed with 504 male and female Brazilian workers. The results of Structural Equation Modeling indicated that the family’s social support presented a positive relationship (β = .20, p < .001) and that the family’s perceived demands presented a negative relationship (β = –.24, p < .001) with positive psychological functioning at work. Furthermore, the core self-evaluation mediated these relationships, and the creativity of the Brazilian way mitigated the negative relationships between the family’s perceived demands and the core self-evaluation, while enhancing the positive relationships between social support and the core self-evaluation. These findings have important theoretical and practical implications for the family-work relationship, demonstrating how the family context, combined with the creativity of the Brazilian approach, plays a key role in promoting positive psychological functioning at work and fostering a healthier balance between family and work domains.
Research on the relationship between transformational leadership and work climate has revealed interesting findings regarding how a leader can influence and improve employees’ perception of a company. However, the mediating role of psychological safety in this relationship is still unclear. This study examines the mediating role of psychological safety in the relationship between transformational leadership and organizational climate. Data were collected from 558 workers of public and private companies in Colombia, using a quantitative approach with a correlational-predictive and cross-sectional design. The hypotheses involved in the proposed mediation model were tested using structural equation modelling, specifically the partial least squares (PLS-SEM) technique with the SmartPLS version 4. The results confirmed the mediation of psychological safety, with an indirect effect of transformational leadership on organizational climate through psychological safety of .203, with a 95 % confidence interval between .129 and .297. In summary, this study demonstrates the positive indirect influence of transformational leadership on organizational climate mediated by psychological safety. These findings have implications for team and organizational management.
The aim of this study was to analyze the internal structure of the short version of the Coping Responses Inventory (CRI-SF) with a sample of 987 individuals aged between 18 and 63years (M = 29; SD = 9.86) from the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Three models were compared using confirmatory factor analyses: Model 1, which tested the fit of the 24 items of the CRI-SFto the approach and avoidance factors; Model 2, which tested the fit of the 24 items to four dimensions according to focus and method; and Model 3, which tested the fit of the 24 items to eight dimensions with second-order approach and avoidance factors. RespecifiedModels 1 and 2showedadequate fit, with the following values : chi 2(CL) = 650.18 (146), RMSEA (IC 90 %) = .07 (.07-.08), SRMR = .08, CFI = .92, TLI = .91, CFI = .96, PNFI = .73, AIC = 46629.55, y chi 2 (CL) = 747.55 (146), RMSEA (IC 90 %) = .06 (.06-.07), SRMR = .07, CFI = .93, TLI = .92, CFI = .97, PNFI = .79, AIC = 51908.43, respectively, and invariance by gender. Model1 showed higher reliabilityvalues. Based on the results and the underlying theoretical model, a valid and reliable short form of the CRI-SF was obtained, consisting of 19 items that measure four factors.
Although the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) has been used to study the construct in Mexican populations, the versions employed in such research have not been specifically adapted for this population. Based on this, the objective of this study was to adapt and determine the factor structure of the MBI-HSS in Mexican public servants. To this end, an instrumental study was conducted that details the process of scale adaptation and cross-validation using a convenience sample of1,551 publicservants. The total sample was divided into two parts: one to conduct an exploratory factor analysis, and the other to perform a confirmatory factor analysis (to verify whether the structure found in the first sample was reproduced in the second). The procedure showed that the MBI-HSS differs from the original version, as although it retains a three-factor structure, it does so with only 17 items. Nevertheless, the CFA indicated that the results of the first sample were reproduced in the second with good fit (CFI = .952, TLI = .949, RMSEA = .053, IC 90 % [.049-.057], SRMR = .067). Furthermore, the reliability indices were adequate for the three subscales-depersonalization (omega = .792), emotional exhaustion (omega = .890), and personal accomplishment (omega = .776)-and the invariance analyses showed item equivalence regarding sex, age, and university education.
