3Studies on Four Little-Known Byzantine Wall Paintings in Latmos
    Hatice Ozyurt Ozcan

Located between the provinces of Mu & gbreve;la and Ayd & imath;n, Latmos-Herakleia is a settlement of the Ancient Caria Region. The city, founded on the shores of Lake Bafa, is surrounded by the Be & scedil;parmak Mountains, known as Latmos in ancient times. Unlike other settlements in the Karia region, traces of the Byzantine period here continue from the 7th century until the end ofthe 13th century. The architectural remains indicatingthe region's Early Christian period are limited, and there are no examples of wall paintings. The region is dotted with places of worship, created by shaping hollowed-out rocks, which are covered with wall paintings. This study examines four little-known examples of paintings identified in the locations known as the Vaulted Structure, Karg & imath;cak Cave, and E & gbreve;ri Dere Rock. The aim is to evaluate these paintings, which have not been published and lack scientific recognition, in light of examples from the region and its immediate surroundings and to include them in the Byzantine painting repertoire. These paintings are dated to the mid-13th century for G & ouml;lyaka and to a time frame from the 8th to the early 10th century for Karg & imath;cak. The paintings at G & ouml;lyaka are dated to the mid-13th century, whereas those at Karg & imath;cak are placed within a timeframe spanning from the 8th to the early 10th century. The rock paintings at E & gbreve;ri Dere and the single scene in the church are dated to the late 9th and early 10th centuries.

4Traces of Warfare in a Medieval City: Examples of Tribolos (caltrop) and Arrowheads Found in Amorium Inner Wall Excavations
    Mehmet Kurt,Zeliha Demirel Gokalp

Since ancient times, military strategies as well as the quality of the war material used have played an important role in winning wars that have been fought for political, economic or religious reasons. Archaeological excavations provide important data on the identification of such war materials. In fact, many war materials used for offensive or defensive purposes have been identified in many centres. Amorium, which is located within the borders of Afyonkarahisar province today, is known to have been the scene of military sieges at certain intervals throughout the Middle Ages due to its location on the main road routes in Anatolia. Archaeological excavations carried out in the city further substantiate the information derived from written sources. As a matter offact, various war materials related to these sieges were found in different parts of the city. This study analyzes a group oftribolos (caltrop) and arrowhead finds recovered duringthe excavations in Amorium, which are thought to be related to military sieges. These finds were found in the Inner Wall, which is located in the southwest corner of the Upper City and is considered to be the most protected part of the city. The tribolos (caltrop) samples, all ofwhich are made of iron and produced bytheforgingtechnique, were analysed as asingle type, while the arrowhead samples were evaluated in three different types: flat, quadrangular and triangular. In addition, both types of finds were dated on the basis of written sources, find-space relationship and similar examples found in other centres.

5The Illustrated Ibratnama: A Didactic Manuscript Commissioned by Sultan Murad III
    Hesna Haral

This article tries to evaluate the paintings of Lami Chalabi's Ibratnama housed in the Dallas Museum of Art [Dallas Museum of Art The Keir Collection of Islamic Art [K.1.2014.38]. The manuscript, dated 1587, prepared by the order of Sultan Murad III. The 21 paintings in Ibratnamathat reflect the style of Nakkash Osman or the artists who worked under his guidance and Nakkash Hasan were evaluated in terms of iconography and painting style. When the relationship between text and miniature is considered, the paintings can be divided into four main groups. In the first group, the depictions of the Castles of Rhodes and Belgrade and the conversion of K & imath;z & imath;lelma Church of Budin into a mosque presenta rare historical iconography. The second group includes depictions of karamatabout the famous sufis such as Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, Pir Bakkal, Ibn al-Farid, Awhad al-Din Kirmani and also the Eight Imam Rida. In the third group, there are scenes depicting the gardens of the "realm of truth". The last group depicts the adventures of characters such as a sultan, a prince and a son of a merchant together with giants, jinns and strange creatures they encounter on their journeys in the "realm of imagination (Khayal)."
