ABSTRACT The decarbonization of hard‐to‐abate sectors, including aviation and maritime transport, is essential to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Power‐to‐fuels (PtF) pathways offer a technically feasible solution, particularly with the growing deployment of renewable energy. However, their large‐scale implementation faces significant economic and technical challenges. Meeting future demand for sustainable fuels will require substantial investment in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis capacities, estimated at €6.5–10.2 billion. In parallel, large‐scale electrolysis capacities are needed to provide hydrogen, with investment costs estimated at three times those of synthesis plants. This publication reviews current developments in electrolysis technologies and component manufacturing, assessing their potential to reduce costs, enhance economic competitiveness, and accelerate the large‐scale deployment of PtF pathways.
ABSTRACT The analysis presented in this article focuses on provisions of the European Union (EU) emissions trading system (ETS) for carbon dioxide that is captured in stationary installations for chemical utilization (CCU). The evolution in EU ETS legislation over more than two decades has led to challenges for CCU pathways with regard to monitoring, reporting, and allowance surrender obligations. This article attempts to trace the development from an engineering perspective. A look ahead suggests that CCU strategies could benefit from the formal expansion of the scope of the EU ETS, which has recently begun to take shape.
ABSTRACT This research involved the synthesis of an Ni–Mo–S modified graphitic carbon nitride nanocomposite, which was then utilized for the photoreforming of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) under UV light. The system achieved an effective PET degradation. High‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC) analysis indicated the generation of low‐molecular‐weight products like ethylene glycol, formic acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid, and hydrogene. The modified catalyst showed higher reported activity than pristine g‐C 3 N 4 and the exclusion controls. Optical spectra, impedance measurements, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis were consistent with changes in light absorption, interfacial charge transfer, and specific surface area. The improved catalytic performance can be attributed to better charge separation and synergistic interactions between the g‐C 3 N 4 and Ni–Mo–S components. This study showcases an effective method for the upcycling of plastic waste.
ABSTRACT Gas chromatography (GC) is an important tool in analytical chemistry and large amounts of data are routinely produced. Despite the advances in the available software, the analysis of a dataset can still be a time‐consuming task, in part due to the manual or semi‐automated marking of peaks. An automation of this tedious task is proposed in this work.
