The results of a study of the effect of mechanical energy on the properties of humic acids in the course of mechanical processing of oxidized coal in a planetary mill are presented. It is shown that, upon the mechanical action on coal in the presence of alkaline and oxidizing alkaline reagents in a planetary-type mill with steel balls used as grinding bodies, the yield of humic acids increased by 25–33%; the molecular weight decreased and the concentration of functional groups increased in comparison with those of humic acids obtained by mechanical processing with ceramic balls. A change in the density of balls affects the mechanics of their motion and the amount of energy during the fall.
The colloid-chemical properties of humic acids (HAs) were studied depending on the mechanochemical modification of their structure. An increase in the amount of acidic ionogenic groups and hydrophilic fragments in the composition of modified HAs facilitated a decrease in the excess energy of surface molecules. In an alkaline solution, two types of colloids characterized by a decrease in the energy of adsorption and the constant of adsorption equilibrium were formed as the concentration of HAs was increased.

It is shown that the yield of humic acids increases by 20-30 % during the mechanical treatment of coals with a complex of oxidative-alkaline reagents. Upon the mechanochemical oxidation of the organic matter of brown coals, the molecular weight of humic acids and the percentage of aliphatic fragments in their structure decrease, while the content of phenolic and carboxyl groups increases. Ion exchange processes during the mechanical treatment of coals with mineral salts are accompanied by a decrease in the content of Na+ cations and an increase in Ca2+, Mg2+ cations in the composition of water-soluble humic substances. The concentration of SO42- ions increases in samples of humic substances obtained from coals after mechanical treatment with ammonium sulphate.
An increase in the concentration of acidic surface groups, the sorption exchange capacity of oxidized coal, and the yield of humic acids by 20–40% due to mechanical action with alkaline and oxidizing alkaline reagents was found. According to the IR-spectroscopic data of coals and the potentiometric titration of acidic groups, a decrease in the concentration of carboxyl groups in aliphatic fragments due to their maximum sorption capacity for metal ions was noted. Humic acids were characterized by a significant increase in the number of oxygen-containing groups and stable polyconjugated heteroaromatic fragments as a result of mechanochemical action.

With the use of a voltammetric method, we found that humic acids (HAs) of different origin extracted from soils, sapropels, peats, and brown coals exhibit pronounced antioxidant properties. According to the results of a correlation analysis, it was shown that the antioxidant activity of HAs depends on the concentration of phenolic hydroxyls and carboxyl groups in a range of pH 10–5.5. Peat HAs were characterized by a maximum antioxidant activity.
The mechanical treatment (MT) of brown coals in the presence of a complex of oxidizing alkaline reagents and mineral salts increased the yield of water-soluble humic substances (HSs) by 20–30%. The composition of coals and reagents in the MT affected the concentration of acidic functional groups in humic acids. Ion-exchange processes during the MT of coals with mineral salts were accompanied by an increase in the concentrations of macro and trace elements in the composition of HSs. A significant increase in the antioxidant activity of humic acids was found upon MT with ammonium phosphate and ammonium sulfate. Mineral elements in HSs exhibited physiological activity by influencing the development of wheat roots and seedlings.
The influence of the concentration and composition of humic acids (HAs) on the biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons was investigated. The HAs were obtained from oxidized brown coal by alkaline extraction upon the mechanical treatment of coal in the presence of 3 and 8 wt % NaOH (HA1 and HA2, respectively). It was found that solid-phase alkaline hydrolysis in the presence of 8 wt % NaOH with the subsequent separation of HA2 with water led to an increase in the degree of aromaticity and the number of phenolic groups. The soil microflora stimulated by HA1 and HA2 had an increased destructive oil-oxidizing activity. A decrease in the concentration of phenanthrene in solution due to the formation of a complex upon interaction with humic acids was established by spectrophotometry.
The elemental and structural-group compositions and paramagnetic properties of the humic acids of peat occurring at different depths of peat deposits of various geneses have been investigated. With decreasing the depth of peat occurrence, the extracted humic acids were characterized by a decrease in the Н/С ratio and the amount of carboxyl and methylene groups and an increase in the signal intensity of organic paramagnetic centers (PMCs), which indicated an increase in the aromatic conjugation structure. The change in the amount of PMCs in the humic acids of peat along the depth of a deposit was directly dependent on the Fe 3+ content.
The effect the mechanochemical modification of humic acids has on their surface-active and acid–base properties is studied. The dependence of the surface activity of humic acids on structural changes, concentration, and the pH of the medium are determined. It is shown that in an alkaline medium, associates of humic acids are characterized by the minimum average particle radius, an increased degree of dissociation of acidic groups, and enhanced surface activity at the gas–liquid interface. A neutral or acidic medium facilitates aggregation and an increase in the size of macromolecules of humic acids.
