In this paper, we report the detection of the very-high-energy (VHE, 100 GeV < E < 100 TeV) and ultra-high-energy (UHE, E > 100 TeV) γ-ray emissions from the direction of the young star-forming region W43, observed by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observation (LHAASO). The extended γ-ray source was detected with a significance of ∼16 σ by KM2A and ∼17 σ by WCDA, respectively. The angular extension of this γ-ray source is about 0.5 degrees, corresponding to a physical size of about 50 pc. We discuss the origin of the γ-ray emission and possible cosmic ray acceleration in the W43 region using multi-wavelength data. Our findings suggest that W43 is likely another young star cluster capable of accelerating cosmic rays (CRs) to at least several hundred TeV.
This study profiled the rumen (RM), small intestine (SI), and large intestine (LI) of 24 samples collected from eight 6-month-old Qianqiu goats (body weight 28.40 ± 1.80 kg), with the samples equally divided into three groups. A combination of methods was used, including 16S rRNA sequencing, untargeted liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) metabolomics, Orthogonal Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (OPLS-DA), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment, and weighted gene co-expression network analysis-based module detection (WGCNA) with network integration. An uncommon composition of organisms dominated the SI: the hydrogenotrophic methanogens Methanobrevibacter (SI 24.51%; RM 1.92%; LI 2.19%) and Methanosphaera (SI 0.43%; RM 0.02%; LI 0.02%), together with the acetogen Acetitomaculum (SI 1.58%; RM 0.34%; LI 0.11%), were markedly more abundant compared to the RM or LI. Correlation and pathway analyses indicated that Methanobrevibacter was positively correlated with a steroid-type lipid metabolite (r = 0.52, p < 0.05) and with bile-acid-related metabolites. Acetitomaculum was positively correlated with several metabolites: 4-Hydroxyphenyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (r = 0.79, p < 0.05), 2-Aminoethyl dihydrogen phosphate (r = 0.76, p < 0.05), 1-Myristoyl-2-stearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (r = 0.76, p < 0.05), and 1,2-Dioleoyl-sn-Glycero-3-Phosphocholine (r = 0.74, p < 0.05). Together, these data define a small-intestinal microbial–metabolite module in Qianqiu goats characterized by elevated abundances of specific methanogens and acetogens in the SI. Specific positive correlations were identified between these taxa and metabolites associated with lipids and bile acids.
We report the detection of an extended very-high-energy (VHE) γ-ray source coincident with the location of middle-aged (62.4 kyr) pulsar PSR J0248+6021, by using the LHAASO-WCDA data of live 796 d and LHAASO-KM2A data of live 1216 d. A significant excess of γ-ray induced showers is observed both by WCDA in energy bands of 1–25 TeV and KM2A in energy bands of >25 TeV with 7.3σ and 13.5σ, respectively. The best-fit position derived through WCDA data is R.A. = 42.06° ± 0.12° and Dec. = 60.24° ± 0.13° with an extension of 0.69°±0.15° and that of the KM2A data is R.A.= 42.29° ± 0.13° and Dec. = 60.38° ± 0.07° with an extension of 0.37° ±0.07°. No clear extended multiwavelength counterpart of this LHAASO source has been found from the radio band to the GeV band. The most plausible explanation of the VHE γ-ray emission is the inverse Compton process of highly relativistic electrons and positrons injected by the pulsar. These electrons/positrons are hypothesized to be either confined within the pulsar wind nebula or to have already escaped into the interstellar medium, forming a pulsar halo.
The ultra-high-energy (UHE) gamma-ray source 1LHAASO J0007+7303u is positionally associated with the composite SNR CTA1 that is located at high Galactic Latitude b ≈ 10.5°. This provides a rare opportunity to spatially resolve the component of the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) and supernova remnant (SNR) at UHE. This paper conducted a dedicated data analysis of 1LHAASO J0007+7303u using the data collected from December 2019 to July 2023. This source is well detected with significances of 21σ and 17σ at 8–100 TeV and >100 TeV, respectively. The corresponding extensions are determined to be 0.23°±0.03° and 0.17°±0.03°. The emission is proposed to originate from the relativistic electrons accelerated within the PWN of PSR J0007+7303. The energy spectrum is well described by a power-law with an exponential cutoff function dN/dE=(42.4± 4.1)(E 20 TeV)^-2.31± 0.11 exp(-E 110± 25 TeV) TeV−1 cm−2 s−1 in the energy range from 8 to 300 TeV, implying a steady-state parent electron spectrum dN_e/dE_e∝ (E_e 100 TeV)^-3.13± 0.16 exp[(-E_e373± 70 TeV)^2] at energies above ≈ 50 TeV. The cutoff energy of the electron spectrum is roughly equal to the expected current maximum energy of particles accelerated at the PWN terminal shock. Combining the X-ray and gamma-ray emission, the current space-averaged magnetic field can be limited to ≈ 4.5 µG. To satisfy the multi-wavelength spectrum and the γ-ray extensions, the transport of relativistic particles within the PWN is likely dominated by the advection process under the free-expansion phase assumption.
The Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA) is one of the components of Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) and can monitor any sources over two-thirds of the sky for up to 7 h per day with >98 per cent duty cycle. In this work, we report the detection of two outbursts of the Fanaroff-Riley I radio galaxy NGC 1275 that were detected by LHAASO-WCDA between 2022 November and 2023 January with statistical significance of 5.2 sigma and 8.3 sigma. The observed spectral energy distribution in the range from 500 GeV to 3 TeV is fitted by a power law with the best-fitting spectral index of alpha = -3.37 +/- 0.52 and -3.35 +/- 0. 29, respectively. The outburst flux above 0.5 TeV was (4.55 +/- 4.21) x10(-11) cm(-2) s(-1) and (3.45 +/- 1.78) x10(-11) cm(-2) s(-1), corresponding to 60 per cent and 45 per cent of Crab Nebula flux, respectively. Variation analysis reveals the variability time-scale of days at the TeV energy band. A simple test by one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model reproduces the data in the gamma-ray band well.
The attenuation length of the muon content in extensive air showers provides important information regarding the generation and development of air showers. This information can be used not only to improve the description of such showers but also to test fundamental models of hadronic interactions. Using data from the LHAASO-KM2A experiment, the development of the muon content in high-energy air showers was studied. The attenuation length of muon content in the air showers was measured from experimental data in the energy range from 0.3 to 30 PeV using the constant intensity cut method. By comparing the attenuation length of the muon content with predictions from high-energy hadronic interaction models (QGSJET-II-04, SIBYLL 2.3d, and EPOS-LHC), it is evident that LHAASO results are significantly shorter than those predicted by the first two models (QGSJET-II-04 and SIBYLL 2.3d) but relatively close to those predicted by the third model (EPOS-LHC). Thus, the LHAASO data favor the EPOS-LHC model over the other two models. The three interaction models confirmed an increasing trend in the attenuation length as the cosmic-ray energy increases.
We report the detection of a γ-ray bubble spanning at least 100deg^2 in ultra high energy (UHE) up to a few PeV in the direction of the star-forming region Cygnus X, implying the presence Super PeVatron(s) accelerating protons to at least 10 PeV. A log-parabola form with the photon index Γ(E) = (2.71 ± 0.02) + (0.11 ± 0.02) ×log_10 (E/10 TeV) is found fitting the gamma-ray energy spectrum of the bubble well. UHE sources, `hot spots' correlated with very massive molecular clouds, and a quasi-spherical amorphous γ-ray emitter with a sharp central brightening are observed in the bubble. In the core of ∼ 0.5^∘, spatially associating with a region containing massive OB association (Cygnus OB2) and a microquasar (Cygnus X-3), as well as previously reported multi-TeV sources, an enhanced concentration of UHE γ-rays are observed with 2 photons at energies above 1 PeV. The general feature of the bubble, the morphology and the energy spectrum, are reasonably reproduced by the assumption of a particle accelerator in the core, continuously injecting protons into the ambient medium.
Fowl adenovirus serotype-4 (FAdV-4) is highly lethal to poultry, making it one of the leading causes of economic losses in the poultry industry. However, a small proportion of poultry can survive after FAdV-4 infection. It is unclear whether there are genetic factors that protect chickens from FAdV-4 infection. Therefore, the livers from chickens uninfected with FAdV-4 (Normal), dead after FAdV-4 infection (Dead) or surviving after FAdV-4 infection (Survivor) were collected for RNA-seq, and 2,649 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified. Among these, many immune-related cytokines and chemokines were significantly upregulated in the Dead group compared with the Survivor group, which might indicate that death is related to an excessive inflammatory immune response (cytokine storm). Subsequently, the KEGG results for DEGs specifically expressed in each comparison group indicated that cell cycle and apoptosis-related DEGs were upregulated and metabolism-related DEGs were downregulated in the Dead group, which also validated the reliability of the samples. Furthermore, GO and KEGG results showed DEGs expressed in all three groups were mainly associated with cell cycle. Among them, BRCA1, CDK1, ODC1, and MCM3 were screened as factors that might influence FAdV-4 infection. The qPCR results demonstrated that these 4 factors were not only upregulated in the Dead group but also significantly upregulated in the LMH cells after 24 h infection by FAdV-4. Moreover, interfering with BRCA1, CDK1, ODC1, and MCM3 significantly attenuated viral replication of FAdV-4. And interfering of BRCA1, CDK1, and MCM3 had more substantial hindering effects. These results provided novel insights into the molecular changes following FAdV-4 infection but also shed light on potential factors driving the survival of FAdV-4 infection in chickens.
Objective: To explore the correlation between pulmonary quantitative CT measurement indicators and respiratory symptoms in patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods: A total of 186 patients with COPD in stable stage who visited in the outpatient department of Beijing Hospital from March 2021 to February 2022 were prospectively included. Demographic data, respiratory symptoms and lung function were collected. The original DICOM data of high-resolution CT (HRCT) were processed using the FACT medical imaging information system and the pulmonary emphysema index pixel index-950 (PI-950) and the airway wall thickness (4-6 T) and the percentage of airway area (4-6 WA%) of the 4-6 generation bronchi which represent the segmental and subsegmental bronchi were measured automatically. According to the modified British medical research council dyspnea scale (mMRC, 0-1 point for low score group, 2-4 points for high score group), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease assessment test (CAT, score<10 points for low score group,≥10 points for high score group), cough, expectoration and wheezing (asymptomatic group and symptomatic group), they were divided into two groups as dependent variables. The relationship between imaging parameters and the above symptoms was evaluated using a logistic regression model. Results: The study ultimately included 186 patients who met the inclusion criteria, including 162 males and 24 females, aged (68.9±9.3) years old. There were 83 patients in the high mMRC group, 120 patients in the high CAT group, 146 patients in the cough group, 154 patients in the expectoration group, and 65 patients in the wheezing group. The age and emphysema parameter PI-950 in the high score group of mMRC were higher than those in the low score group, while the percentage of the forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) predicted value (FEV1 pred) after medication, the percentage of carbon monoxide diffusion volume (DLCO) predicted value (DLCO pred), and the percentage of the maximum midexpiratory flow (MMEF) predicted value (MMEF pred) after medication were lower than those in the low score group (all P<0.05). The age of the high CAT group was higher than that of the low score group, while FEV1 pred and MMEF pred after medication were lower than those of the low score group (all P<0.05). The proportion of males, patients with smoking history, and smoking index in the cough group were higher than those in the non cough group, while the 4 WA% was lower than that in the non cough group (all P<0.05). The proportion of males, patients with smoking history, smoking index, and PI-950 in the expectoration group were higher than those in the non expectoration group, while FEV1 pred after medication and 4 WA% were lower than those in the non expectoration group (all P<0.05). The 5 WA% and 6 WA% of the wheezing group were higher than those of the non wheezing group, while MMEF pred after medication was lower than that of the non wheezing group (all P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that after adjusting for demographic characteristics, smoking, combined diseases, lung function and other confounding factors, for every 10% increase in PI-950, the likelihood of developing more severe dyspnea for the patients (high score group according to mMRC) increased by 67.3% (OR=1.673, 95%CI: 1.052-2.658); Every 10% increase in 6WA% increased the likelihood of wheezing by 3.189 times (OR=4.189, 95%CI: 1.070-16.395). No correlation was found between various imaging indicators and cough, expectoration, and CAT scores (P>0.05). Conclusion: Quantitative CT measurement indicators in stable COPD patients can explain the presence and severity of respiratory symptoms, the pulmonary emphysema indicator is associated with dyspnea, and the percentage of proximal airway wall area is associated with wheezing.
China is rich in goat breeding resources. Officially recognized local goat breeds are mainly distributed in agro-ecological regions. The population structure and matrilineal origin of native Chinese goats can be used to formulate protection and utilization strategies for these genetic resources. In this study, the genetic structure and maternal origin of native Chinese goats were investigated using mtDNA D-loop sequences. A total of 329 goat samples from 25 Chinese indigenous goat populations and five introduced goat breeds from abroad were collected; these populations were distributed in four ecogroups designated as Southwest, South-central, the North China Plain, and Foreign-ecogroup. A larger average number of nucleotide differences and richer nucleotide diversity were observed in South-central and Foreign-ecogroup, whereas these were lower in Southwest. The 216 haplotypes divided into several haplogroups, of which HapA contained 99 haplotypes distributed in Southwest, the North China Plain, and Foreign-ecogroup with high frequency (0.53-0.77), whereas the frequency of HapA in South-central was <0.09. HapB was mostly found in South-central (0.5538) and was distributed to the North China Plain (0.2667), while it was rare in Southwest (<0.08) and Foreign-ecogroup (<0.07). According to the estimation of kinship and ancestry, HapA had five ancestors (A2, A3, A5, A10, and A12), HapB had a single maternal ancestor (A8), and HapC had two maternal ancestors (A1 and A4). This study showed that native Chinese goat breeds were mainly divided into three haplogroups (HapA, HapB, and HapC) and goat populations have expanded in the ecological regions.
In the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), one square kilometer array (KM2A), with 5242 electromagnetic particle detectors (EDs) and 1171 muon detectors (MDs), is designed to study ultra-high energy gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic ray physics. The remoteness and numerous detectors extremely demand a robust and automatic calibration procedure. In this paper, a self-calibration method which relies on the measurement of charged particles within the extensive air showers is proposed. The method is fully validated by Monte Carlo simulation and successfully applied in a KM2A prototype array experiment. Experimental results show that the self-calibration method can be used to determine the detector time offset constants at the sub-nanosecond level and the number density of particles collected by each ED with an accuracy of a few percents, which are adequate to meet the physical requirements of LHAASO experiment. This software calibration also offers an ideal method to realtime monitor the detector performances for next generation ground-based EAS experiments covering an area above square kilometers scale.
Background Runs of homozygosity (ROH) are continuous homozygous regions typically located in the DNA sequence of diploid organisms. Identifications of ROH that lead to reduced performance can provide valuable insight into the genetic architecture of complex traits. Here, we systematically investigated the population genetic structure of five Anhui indigenous pig breeds (AHIPs), and compared them to those of five Western commercial pig breeds (WECPs). Furthermore, we examined the occurrence and distribution of ROHs in the five AHIPs and estimated the inbreeding coefficients based on the ROHs (F ROH ) and homozygosity (F HOM ). Finally, we identified genomic regions with high frequencies of ROHs and annotated candidate genes contained therein. Results The WECPs and AHIPs were clearly differentiated into two separate clades consistent with their geographical origins, as revealed by the population structure and principal component analysis. We identified 13,530 ROHs across all individuals, of which 4,555 and 8,975 ROHs were unique to AHIPs and WECPs, respectively. Most ROHs identified in our study were short (< 10 Mb) or medium (10–20 Mb) in length. WECPs had significantly higher numbers of short ROHs, and AHIPs generally had longer ROHs. F ROH values were significantly lower in AHIPs than in WECPs, indicating that breed improvement and conservation programmes were successful in AHIPs. On average, F ROH and F HOM values were highly correlated (0.952–0.991) in AHIPs and WECPs. A total of 27 regions had a high frequency of ROHs and contained 17 key candidate genes associated with economically important traits in pigs. Among these, nine candidate genes ( CCNT2 , EGR2 , MYL3 , CDH13 , PROX1 , FLVCR1 , SETD2 , FGF18 , and FGF20 ) found in WECPs were related to muscular and skeletal development, whereas eight candidate genes ( CSN1S1 , SULT1E1 , TJP1, ZNF366 , LIPC , MCEE , STAP1 , and DUSP ) found in AHIPs were associated with health, reproduction, and fatness traits. Conclusion Our findings provide a useful reference for the selection and assortative mating of pig breeds, laying the groundwork for future research on the population genetic structures of AHIPs, ultimately helping protect these local varieties.
Objective: To explore the prognosis of patients with leptomeningeal metastasis (LM) and epidermal growth factor receptor mutated (EGFRm) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with different kinds of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). Methods: From January 2016 to June 2021, the clinicopathological data of 70 patients confirmed by histologically or cytologically EGFRm LM who received different types of TKIs in Cancer Hospital of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences were retrospectively analyzed. According to treatment patterns, patients were divided into the first-and second-generation EGFR-TKIs treatment group and the third-generation EGFR-TKIs treatment group [Osimertinib 80 mg once a day], and the prognosis and prognostic factors (with Cox proportional hazards model) of patients in different treatment group were assessed. The next-generation sequencing (NGS) of paired samples of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma from 64 patients at the time of LM diagnosis was performed simultaneously. Results: There were 20 males and 50 females in 70 EGFRm NSCLC patients with LM. The age ranged from 35 to 69 years, with a median age of 56 years. A total of 24 patients received the first-and second-generation EGFR-TKIs treatment, and 46 received the third-generation EGFR-TKIs treatment. Twenty-four patients developed disease progression on the first-and second EGFR-TKIs treatments, followed by treatment with the third-generation EGFR-TKIs (Osimertinib) in 12 cases, chemotherapy or anti-angiogenesis therapy in 4 cases, and the optimal supportive treatment in 8 cases. Among the 70 patients, 18 had partial response (PR), 48 had stable disease (SD), and 4 had progressive disease (PD). The objective response rate (ORR) and disease control rate (DCR) were 26% (18/70) and 94% (66/70), respectively. The median follow-up time was 16.5 months. The median progression-free survival (PFS) was 5.3 months(95%CI: 2.8-7.8)in the first-and second-generation EGFR-TKIs and 10.8 months (95%CI: 7.9-13.6) in the third-generation EGFR-TKIs, and the difference was statistically significant (P=0.019). The median overall survival (OS) was 14.9 months (95%CI: 9.7-20.0) and 15.7 months (95%CI: 13.3-18.1) in the two groups, respectively, but no statistical differences was observed (P=0.713). Univariate analysis showed that the PFS of patients with EGFRm LM were related to gender and different types of EGFR-TKIs (P˂0.05). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that male (HR=2.30, 95%CI: 1.31-4.03, P=0.004) and the first-and second-generation EGFR-TKIs (HR=2.03, 95%CI: 1.20-3.41, P=0.008) were independent risk factors for PFS in patients with EGFRm LM. The EGFR mutation was detected in 61 (95%) CSF and in 27 (42%) plasma samples. Conclusion: In EGFRm NSCLC patients with LM, the dose of Osimertinib 80 mg (once a day) has a significant PFS benefit compared with the first-and second-generation EGFR-TKIs.
Columnar grain structures (CCS) often distinct in steel ingots, which have to be refined and homogenized during forging. In this investigation, simulation of deformation and dynamic recrystallization of austenitic stainless steels with CCSs were carried out by macroscopic, mesoscopic (microscopic) and nanoscale simulation techniques. (1) Using molecular dynamics simulation method, the nano-CGSs model with different loading directions was simulated. The results show that the deformation stresses are anisotropic with variation of angles between the loading direction and the columnar crystal growth direction. The higher stresses present at the 0° and 90° angles due to higher dislocation density; However, the lower stresses present at the angles from 30° to 60° due to higher stacking faults and twins. (2) The cellular automata (CA) fractal rules were proposed to simulate nucleation and grain growth of dynamic recrystallization by introducing weighted variables considering Σ3 twin nucleation rate for the twinning-promoted recrystallization. The CA method of nucleation at primary columnar crystal boundaries, secondary dendrites and deformation bands was proposed to simulate the joint nucleation. (3) The coupling simulation of macroscopic thermal parameters by finite element method, solidification of columnar structures and hot deformation dynamic recrystallization by CA was realized.
The Kilometer Square Array (KM2A) of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) aims at surveying the northern gamma-ray sky at energies above 10 TeV with unprecedented sensitivity. Gamma-ray observations have long been one of the most powerful tools for dark matter searches, as e.g., high-energy gamma-rays could be produced by the decays of heavy dark matter particles. In this letter, we present the first dark matter analysis with LHAASO-KM2A, using the first 340 days of data from 1/2-KM2A and 230 days of data from 3/4-KM2A. Several regions of interest are used to search for a signal and account for the residual cosmic-ray background after gamma/hadron separation. We find no excess of dark matter signals, and thus place some of the strongest gamma-ray constraints on the lifetime of heavy dark matter particles with mass between 10^5 and 10^9 GeV. Our results with LHAASO are robust, and have important implications for dark matter interpretations of the diffuse astrophysical high-energy neutrino emission.
We investigate the extinction coefficients of atmospheric aerosol over the Large High Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), located at the Haizi Mountain, Daocheng County, China. The Aerosol Optical Depth(AOD), the column-integrated extinction coefficient(EC), is obtained by MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS) from 2011-2018. The data of extinction coefficients over LHAASO have been analyzed by Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) satellite during 2011-2017. Our results show that the AOD and EC have a yearly variation with the peak values in July, August and September, and less in the other months, which suggests that the atmospheric aerosols over LHAASO has its special characteristics. Over LHAASO the EC of the atmospheric aerosols are very small, which is consistent with other studies. The maximum values of EC occurred around 6 similar to 7km altitude. Due to the bigger error of EC, more CALIPSO data to be utilized for the variability of EC over LHAASO.

The Crab Nebula is a bright source of gamma rays powered by the Crab Pulsar's rotational energy through the formation and termination of a relativistic electron-positron wind. We report the detection of gamma rays from this source with energies from 5 × 10-4 to 1.1 peta-electron volts with a spectrum showing gradual steepening over three energy decades. The ultrahigh-energy photons imply the presence of a peta-electron volt electron accelerator (a pevatron) in the nebula, with an acceleration rate exceeding 15% of the theoretical limit. We constrain the pevatron's size between 0.025 and 0.1 parsecs and the magnetic field to ≈110 microgauss. The production rate of peta-electron volt electrons, 2.5 × 1036 ergs per second, constitutes 0.5% of the pulsar spin-down luminosity, although we cannot exclude a contribution of peta-electron volt protons to the production of the highest-energy gamma rays.
