Background: Depression is a prevalent disorder characterized by both somatic and affective symptoms. The relationship between childhood trauma and somatic symptoms is not a simple direct association, it suggests the involvement of underlying gene-environment interactions. Objective: This study examined whether OPRL1 gene methylation moderates the relationship between childhood trauma and somatization in individuals with depression. Methods: A total of 107 patients diagnosed with depressive disorders and hospitalized at a mental health center between May and October 2022 were included. Participants completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, Hamilton Anxiety Scale, and Hamilton Depression Scale. Blood samples were collected to assess OPRL1 gene methylation levels. The moderating effect of OPRL1 methylation on the association between childhood trauma and somatic symptoms was examined using PROCESS macro for SPSS. Results: Childhood trauma was positively associated with somatization, while OPRL1 gene methylation was negatively associated with somatization severity. Regression analyses confirmed that moderate and high OPRL1 methylation levels significantly attenuated the impact of childhood trauma on somatic symptoms, independent of depression severity. Conclusions: Higher OPRL1 methylation buffer childhood adversity's impact on somatic symptoms, advancing understanding of biological differences in depression.
Nightmare Distress Questionnaire (NDQ) is commonly used to assess nightmare distress. The psychometric properties of the Chinese version of NDQ (NDQ-CV) have been shown to be satisfactory in the general population of Chinese adolescents. This study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of NDQ-CV in adolescents with psychiatric disorders. A total of 536 patients with psychiatric disorders aged 10-19 years old were recruited from Shandong Mental Health Center in China between October 2021 and March 2022. A structured questionnaire including NDQ-CV was used to measure nightmare distress, nightmare frequency, sleep duration, insomnia, daytime sleepiness, and depressive symptoms. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed to assess the factor structure of NDQ-CV in adolescents with psychiatric disorders. The mean age of the participants was 15.30 +/- 1.95, and 61% was female. Fifty-two percent of participants were diagnosed with depressive disorder. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the revised one-factor model was most suitable to interpret the structure of NDQ-CV. The internal consistency reliability coefficient was 0.94. The total scale score was significantly correlated with nightmare frequency, gender, sleep duration, insomnia, daytime sleepiness, and depressive symptoms. Furthermore, there were significant differences in NDQ-CV total scores between adolescents with psychiatric disorders and the general adolescent population. The NDQ-CV has satisfactory reliability and validity and is suitable to assess nightmare distress in adolescents with psychiatric disorders. Further studies are needed to investigate the psychometric properties of NDQ-CV in clinical and healthy adult populations.

Studies have previously demonstrated that anxious attachment shapes the association between childhood traumatic experiences and somatic pain; however, it remains unclear how this relationship is influenced by anxious attachment in patients with depression. This study investigated how anxious attachment influences the relationship between childhood traumatic experiences and pain symptoms in depressed patients from a social psychological perspective. A total of 139 adult patients with depression participated in this study; the level of depression was assessed by a psychiatric professional. Childhood trauma, pain symptoms, and attachment dimensions were tested by various questionnaires. The moderating role of anxious attachment in the trauma-pain association was examined using the PROCESS Model 1. Our findings showed that in depressed patients, childhood maltreatment had a significant positive impact on the severity of pain ratings. Moreover, anxious attachment influenced the relationship between childhood trauma and pain symptoms. Our study indicated that anxious attachment is not necessarily a negative outcome for depressed patients; moderate levels of anxious attachment alleviate childhood trauma-related pain symptoms in individuals with highly traumatic experiences. Understanding the traumatic experiences and attachment styles of depressed patients with pain complaints can help to develop intervention strategies.
Background: Nightmares are common in patients with psychiatric disorders. Patients with psychiatric disorders often experience depressive symptoms. Nightmares have been associated with depressive symptoms among adolescents. Previous studies have explored the mediating role of nightmare distress in the relationship between frequent nightmares and depressive symptoms in the general adolescent population. We aimed to explore the associations between frequent nightmares, nightmare distress, and depressive symptoms in Chinese adolescent patients with psychiatric disorders. Methods: A total of 408 adolescents participated in this study. A self-administered questionnaire was used to measure nightmare frequency, nightmare distress, depressive symptoms, and covariates. Linear regressions and mediation analyses were performed to examine the associations between nightmare frequency, nightmare distress, and depressive symptoms. Results: The mean age of participants was 15.31 +/- 1.88 years, and 152 (37.3%) were boys. The prevalence of frequent nightmares in adolescent patients with psychosis was 49.3%. Girls reported more frequent nightmares and had significantly higher scores of depressive symptoms and nightmare distress. Patients with frequent nightmares had higher scores of nightmare distress and depressive symptoms. Frequent nightmares and nightmare distress were significantly associated with depressive symptoms. Nightmare distress had a full mediating effect on the correlation between frequent nightmares and depressive symptoms. Conclusions: In Chinese adolescent patients with psychiatric disorders, frequent nightmares and night-mare distress were associated with depressive symptoms, whereas the association between frequent nightmares and depressive symptoms was mediated by nightmare distress. Interventions for nightmare distress may be more useful in reducing depressive symptoms in adolescent patients with psychiatric disorders.(c) 2023 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
The 8-item Youth Self-rated Insomnia Scale (YSIS) was developed to assess insomnia severity in the past month among youths. The YSIS has satisfactory psychometric properties in the general adolescent population. This study examined psychometric properties of the YSIS in a large sample of adolescent psychiatric patients. A total of 536 patients aged 10–19 years were consecutively recruited from the outpatient department of Shandong Mental Health Center between December 2021 and March 2022. Patients completed a structured questionnaire consisting of the YSIS scale and questions about sleep duration, nightmares, psychiatric history, depression, psychiatric and sleep medications, and demographics. Patients were diagnosed following the ICD-10 criteria. Of the participants, the mean age was 15.30 years (SD = 1.95), 61.0

Objective: This study aims to develop a simplified Chinese version of the "Memory for Intentions Test" (MIST), evaluate its reliability and concurrent validity, explore the inter-relationships among the MIST variables and the relationships between the MIST variables and socio-demographic factors. Method: Two hundred healthy, Chinese-speaking adults of the Han community participated in this study. Form A of the Chinese MIST and two prospective items of the Rivermead Behavioural Memory Test, Second Edition (RBMT-II, Chinese version) were administered to all participants to evaluate internal consistency, split-half reliability, and concurrent validity. Twenty of these participants were assessed twice on Form A with a two-week interval to examine test-retest reliability. They were also assessed on both Form A and Form B to examine alternate-form reliability. Results: The findings of the study indicated good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = .833) and excellent split-half reliability (r = .924-.930) among the six subscales of the Chinese MIST, although the internal consistency was low (Cronbach's alpha = .129) for individual PM trials. We also found adequate concurrent validity (rho = .722, p< .001), test-retest reliability (rho = .716, p < .001), and alternate-form reliability (rho= .828, p < .001). Conclusions: The Chinese MIST demonstrated suitable reliability and concurrent validity in the Chinese-speaking population. The present study provides a new standardized prospective memory test for the Chinese population, which would enhance future clinical research in this field on the Chinese mainland.
Background: Neural precursor cell-expressed developmentally downregulated 4 (NEDD4) polymorphisms and childhood trauma (CT) are associated with schizophrenia. However, whether NEDD4 interacts with CT on symptoms of schizophrenia remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the gene–environment interaction effect. Methods: We recruited 289 schizophrenia patients and 487 controls and genotyped rs2303579, rs3088077, rs7162435, rs11550869, and rs62043855 in their NEDD4 gene. Results: We found significant differences in the rs2303579 and rs3088077 between the two groups. Patients with the rs2303579 CC genotype had higher scores compared with other genotype (P = 0.026) in the test of positive schizophrenia syndrome scores, whereas patients with the rs3088077 TT (P = 0.037) and rs7162435 CC genotypes (P = 0.009) had higher scores compared with the other genotypes in the test of excitement factor. Patients with a family history of psychosis (FH+) reported higher negative scores (P = 0.012) than those without. Patients exposed to physical abuse (PA) reported a lower language learning and memory score (P = 0.017) and working memory score (P = 0.047) than those not. Patients exposed to sexual abuse (SA) reported a lower reasoning and problem-solving skills score (P = 0.025); those exposed to emotional neglect (EN) reported a lower social cognition score (P = 0.044); and those exposed to physical neglect reported a lower social cognition score (P = 0.036) but higher visual learning and memory score (P = 0.032). Rs3088077 could interact with EN to increase risk for schizophrenia. Optimal model rs62043855 × EA, rs3088077 × rs7162435 × rs11550869 × SA × EN and rs2303579 × rs7162435 × rs11550869 × rs62043855 × EA × PA could explain positive symptom, excitement symptom and working memory, respectively, in FH+ group. Conclusion: The study highlighted that the combined interaction of NEDD4 and CT may be associated with symptoms of schizophrenia especially for those with FH+.
AIMS:Pain and depressive symptoms are prevalent in adolescents. Data on the association between pain and depressive symptoms in the general adolescent population are limited. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prospective associations of headache, stomachache, and other nonspecific pain with depressive symptoms in a large sample of Chinese adolescents.METHODS:A total of 7072 adolescents who participated in the baseline survey and were followed up 1 year later were included in the prospective analysis. Participants completed a self-administered questionnaire to assess three types of pain (headache, stomachache, and other nonspecific pain) and demographics. Depressive symptoms were assessed by the Center for Epidemiology Studies Depression Scale. Logistic regression models were conducted to evaluate the associations between pain and depressive symptoms.RESULTS:The prevalence and incidence rates of depressive symptoms significantly increased with elevated pain frequencies. After adjusting for insomnia symptoms and other adolescent and family covariates, frequent headache (OR=2.39, 95% CI =1.37-4.16) and other nonspecific pain (sometimes pain: OR=1.57, 95% CI =1.14-2.15; frequent pain: OR=2.78, 95% CI =1.33-5.82) were significantly associated with increased risk of depressive symptoms 1 year later. Study limitation: Pain and depressive symptoms were self-reports.CONCLUSIONS:The findings suggest that frequent pain is associated with subsequent depressive symptoms. Further research is needed to determine the causal relationship between pain and depressive symptoms in adolescents.
Aim: To explore the mental health status and the quality of sleep, and their relationship in patients with chronic prostatitis. Methods: A total of 200 patients with chronic protatitis were involved in the study. The mental health status and the quality of sleep were evaluated with Pittsburgh sleep quality index(PSQI), symptom checklist (SCL-90) and self-made related factors inventory. Results: There were 51.5% of the patients with problem of sleep. The factors of SCL-90(except human relationship and hostility), total score, SAS and SDS total score of patients with PSQI ≥ 8 were significantly higher than those with PSQI≤7; the higher the score of PSQI was, the higher the scores of SCL-90 factors, total score, SAS and SDS were(F = 1.424 - 34.648, P < 0.01 - 0.05). The quality of sleep was positively related to somatization, compulsion, depression, anxiety, panic and insanity of SCL-90, and there was also a positive relation of sleep quality with other seven factors and total score(r = 0.0097 - 0.6317, P < 0.01 - 0.05). The quality of sleep was influenced by multiple factors, they were sexual dysfunction, local uncomfort of body, age of first episode, negative life events and bad relation with spouse in order(r = 0.009 2 - 0.056 1). Conclusion: Sleep disorder is one of the main symptoms in patients with chronic protatitis, and it has a close relation with mental health status, anxiety and depression.
