The illusory truth effect, in which repeated exposure increases trust regardless of accuracy, poses significant challenges to the perceived trustworthiness of health information in digital environments. Although repetition is known to enhance cognitive fluency, little is known about how different modalities influence this effect. Drawing on cognitive fluency and dual-coding theories, this research investigates how repetition and modality interact to shape trustworthiness judgments of health information. Three online experiments were conducted to examine users' perceived trustworthiness of health information across different conditions. Experiment 1 the effect of repetition on messages varying in truthfulness (true vs. false) and familiarity (familiar vs. unfamiliar). Experiments 2 and 3 examined the role of modality (text-only, text-and-image, short video) and cross-modal repetition. Results show that, in the text-only condition, an unfamiliar true message is perceived as more trustworthy than other information. Repetition significantly increases perceived trustworthiness in text-and-image and short video formats, albeit with diminishing returns after two exposures. Cross-modal repetition further amplifies such trustworthiness effects. These findings extend theoretical understanding of the illusory truth effect in multimodal health information environments and offer practical insights for designing interventions to reduce the spread of misinformation on social media.

Mobile health applications (mHealth apps) have surged in popularity for their role in promoting knowledge exchange and providing emotional support among health consumers. However, this enhanced social connectivity via these apps has led to an escalation in privacy breaches, potentially hindering user engagement. Drawing upon the communication privacy management theory, this study proposes a moderated mediation model to link social privacy concerns to user engagement in mHealth apps. An online survey involving 1149 mHealth app users was conducted in China to empirically validate the proposed model. Results indicated that social privacy concerns were negatively related to user engagement in mHealth apps, and perceived privacy of the app partially mediated this relationship. Moreover, perceived control positively moderated the indirect relationship between social privacy concerns and user engagement via perceived privacy. Specifically, the negative impact of social privacy concerns on perceived privacy was mitigated for users who reported higher levels of perceived control, indicating that when users feel more in control of their personal data, they are less affected by concerns over social privacy. Theoretically, this study has the potential to help scholars understand user engagement in mHealth apps from a privacy management perspective. Practically, the results of this study could assist mobile app providers and health professionals in devising evidence-based strategies to enhance social engagement and promote effective and sustainable use of mHealth apps among health consumers.
Investigating the intricate relationship between citation similarity and the citation interval offers vital insights for refining citation recommendation systems and enhancing citation evaluation models. This is also a new perspective for understanding citation patterns. In this study, we used the Library and Information Science (LIS) field as an example to determine and discuss the correlation between citation similarity and the citation interval. Using the methods of data collection, paper title preprocessing, text vectorization based on simCSE, calculation of citation similarity and the citation interval, and calculation of the index per citing paper, this study found the following LIS domain-based results: (i) there is a significant negative correlation between citation similarity and the citation interval, but the correlation coefficient is low. (ii) The citation intervals of the least relevant series of cited papers exhibit a more pronounced susceptibility to citation similarity than the most relevant series of cited papers. (iii) The citation intervals of the most relevant cited papers are more concentrated within 12 years and more likely to be published within the average citation interval, typically from the newer half of the cited paper list and published later within 5 years of the citation half-life. This study concludes that researchers usually pay more attention to the latest and most cutting-edge and strongly relevant existing research than to weakly relevant existing research. Continuous attention and timely incorporation of knowledge into the research direction will promote a more rapid and specialized diffusion of knowledge. These findings are influenced by the accelerated dissemination of information via Internet, heightened academic competition, and the concentration of research endeavors in specialized disciplines. This study not only contributes to the scholarly discussion of citation analysis but also lays the foundation for future exploration and understanding of citation patterns.
Based on the expectancy-value theory, contextual factors related to users’ self-regulated learning (SRL) on medial Q&A platforms were investigated. A theoretical model was developed and validated through an online survey involving 483 participants with experience in health information-seeking on medical Q&A platforms. The empirical analysis yielded three main findings. First, a significant positive relationship existed between searching for health answers and SRL. Second, perceived usefulness of health answers was also positively related to SRL. Third, user satisfaction with the medical Q&A platform partially mediated the relationship between searching for health answers and SRL, as well as the relationship between perceived usefulness of health answers and SRL. This study bridges the gap between the field of self-regulated learning and medical Q&A research, providing valuable insights for improving the well-being of online health information consumers and advancing the information science community.
• In-app purchase culminates in an attractive and convenient shopping environment that encourages impulse buying . • Self-control breakdown fuels cascading negative emotional and behavioral reactions to in-app purchases. • Product appeal moderates complex interdependencies among cognitive, affective, and behavioral reactions to in-app impulse buying. • Affect-Behavior-Cognition model is a fitting theoretical lens for elucidating consumers' post-purchase reactions. Deciphering how consumers react to impulse purchases is vital for sellers to bolster consumers' post-purchase experience and induce subsequent purchase behavior. Contextualized to in-app purchases, this study draws on the Affect-Behavior-Cognition (ABC) model to disentangle the relationships among distinct categories of negative post-purchase reactions and the moderating influence of product appeal on these relationships. Empirical data was collected from an online survey of 376 in-app buyers and Covariance-Based Structural Equation Modelling (CB-SEM) was employed to validate the research model. Analytical results indicate that awareness of breakdown in self-control exerts a positive effect on post-purchase regret while regret positively impact the negative emotions of anger and guilt, both of which in turn drive the concealment of purchased good or service. In-app product appeal is discovered to reinforce the relationships between regret and anger/guilt as well as the relationship between anger and concealment while simultaneously attenuating the relationship between guilt and concealment. This study sheds light on impulsive in-app purchases by delivering a deeper understanding of the interdependencies among constituent post-purchase reactions in the context of in-app impulse buying.
Numerous studies have documented adverse consequences arising from increased technology usage and advocated for a reduction in such usage as a plausible remedy. However, such recommendations are often infeasible and oversimplistic given mounting evidence attesting to users’ growing reliance on technology in both their personal and professional lives. Building on conservation of resources (COR) theory, we construct a research model to explain how mobile application usage, as delineated by its breadth and depth, affects users’ nomophobia and sleep deprivation, which can have negative impacts on users’ health status. We also consider the moderating influence of physical activity in mitigating the effects of mobile application usage on users’ health. We validated our hypotheses via data collected by surveying 5,842 respondents. Empirical findings reveal that (1) nomophobia is positively influenced by mobile application usage breadth but negatively influenced by mobile application usage depth, (2) sleep deprivation is negatively influenced by mobile application usage breadth but positively influenced by mobile application usage depth, and (3) sleep deprivation and nomophobia negatively impact users’ health status, whereas (4) physical activity attenuates the impact of mobile application usage on sleep deprivation but not nomophobia. The findings from this study not only enrich the extant literature on the health outcomes of mobile application usage by unveiling the impact of mobile application usage patterns and physical activity on users’ health but they also inform practitioners on how calibrating usage breadth and depth, along with encouraging physical activity, can promote healthy habits among users.

ABSTRACTBased on the privacy calculus theory, users’ decision‐making on privacy disclosure was traditionally viewed as a trade‐off between perceived values and privacy concerns. However, recent studies suggest that the impacts of users’ cognitive style and platform trust cannot be ignored in the context of social media platforms. From a configurational perspective, this study explores how these factors collectively affect users’ privacy disclosure. Data from 452 respondents on a Chinese social media platform were collected through an online survey. The results suggested that users’ decision‐making on privacy disclosure in social media is a complex process involving different configurations. For field‐dependent individuals, the trade‐off between perceived values and privacy concerns is less important than the role of cognitive style. For field‐independent individuals, beyond the trade‐off between perceived values in different dimensions and privacy concerns, their decisions are also contingent on platform trust.
Purpose As the number of social media users continues to rise globally, a heated debate emerges on whether social media use improves or harms mental health, as well as the bidirectional relation between social media use and mental health. Motivated by this, the authors’ study adopts the stressor–strain–outcome model and social compensation hypothesis to disentangle the effect mechanism between social media use and psychological well-being. The purpose of this paper is to address this issue. Design/methodology/approach To empirically validate the proposed research model, a large-scale two-year longitudinal questionnaire survey on social media use was administered to a valid sample of 6,093 respondents recruited from a university in China. Structural equation modeling was employed for data analysis. Findings A longitudinal analysis reveals that social media use positively (negatively) impacts psychological well-being through the mediator of nomophobia (perceived social support) in a short period. However, social media use triggers more psychological unease, as well as more life satisfaction from a longitudinal perspective. Originality/value This study addresses the bidirectional relation between social media use and psychological unease. The current study also draws both theoretical and practical implications by unmasking the bright–dark duality of social media use on psychological well-being.
Purpose To cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, contact tracing mobile apps (CTMAs) have been developed to trace contact among infected individuals and alert people at risk of infection. To disrupt virus transmission until the majority of the population has been vaccinated, achieving the herd immunity threshold, CTMA continuance usage is essential in managing the COVID-19 pandemic. This study seeks to examine what motivates individuals to continue using CTMAs. Design/methodology/approach Following the coping theory, this study proposes a research model to examine CTMA continuance usage, conceptualizing opportunity appraisals (perceived usefulness and perceived distress relief), threat appraisals (privacy concerns) and secondary appraisals (perceived response efficacy) as the predictors of individuals' CTMA continuance usage during the pandemic. In the United States, an online survey was administered to 551 respondents. Findings The results revealed that perceived usefulness and response efficacy motivate CTMA continuance usage, while privacy concerns do not. Originality/value This study enriches the understanding of CTMA continuance usage during a public health crisis, and it offers practical recommendations for authorities.
Extant literature on measuring the performance of physicians’ knowledge contribution in an online health community (OHC) is limited. To address this gap, this article aims to (1) develop a measurement model for physicians’ knowledge contribution performance; (2) use BP neural network to assign reasonable weight to each indicator of the model; and (3) explore the status and differences of knowledge contribution performance among a group of physicians. Based on the sample of 5407 infectious disease physicians in a Chinese OHC, we propose the measurement model by integrating physicians’ active knowledge contribution (AKC) and responsive knowledge contribution (RKC), covering 11 dimensions of contribution quantity and quality. We employ the BP neural network to optimise the model weights using the initial weight of the model obtained by the entropy method. The Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method is used to evaluate the performance of physicians’ knowledge contribution in the OHC. The results show that it is feasible to use BP neural network to assign model weights. The distribution of physicians’ knowledge contribution performance is uneven; only a few have a high-level knowledge contribution performance. Meanwhile, a significant positive correlation exists between a physician’s title and respective knowledge contribution performance. Our research may contribute to related literature and practices by offering a fine-grained understanding of the performance of physicians’ knowledge contribution.

This study explores the differences between highlight papers and non-highlight papers from the perspective of academic influence as a crucial insight for evaluating scientific research. Three dimensions are considered: journals, papers, and research highlights. We selected 8 academic journals in the field of library and information science, which are published by Elsevier and indexed by SSCI, and analyzed 5,020 academic papers published therein from 2011 to 2020. The results of our empirical study demonstrate that all journals acknowledge the existence of research highlights, although not all online academic papers provide them. In recent years, the number of highlight papers has increased annually, and more importantly, the proportion has also grown steadily. The ETA square coefficient of citations is higher for highlight papers compared to non-highlight papers. Furthermore, in the training of the innovation recognition model, the effect of the training model that uses the research highlights of academic papers with high citation frequency is better, although the PRF value has a smaller difference.
