The development of approaches to the creation of new materials with functional properties is one of the main directions for progress of their application in various fields. This work proposes an approach to surface modification of polyamide-12 (PA) powder with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to impart electrical conductivity and create a material suitable for selective laser sintering (SLS) 3D printing. A previously unknown transition in the conductivity character change with increasing SWCNTs content on the surface of polymer powder particles, demonstrating a change in the state of the electrically conductive network from quasi-planar to spatial, was discovered. The main parameters of the resulting powders were also studied, which determine the possibility of their use for the SLS method: flowability, compactability, transmittance and morphology. As a result, a simple method of new materials obtaining based on PA/SWCNTs with high electrical conductivity was proposed, which are suitable for application in 3D printing.
The emerging versatile realm of graphene/metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) composites has boosted the development of energy storage and gas sensing systems. However, with the advancements in deriving composites of more complex designs, the explicit understanding of their physics with respect to chemistry and morphology began to fade. Here, we aspire to hint at the effect of ZnO nanoparticles on aminated graphene, bundling theoretical modeling with thorough experimental examination (Transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron, X-ray absorption fine structure and valence-band photoemission spectroscopies, and temperature-dependent sheet resistance measurements). Starting with setting up the framework for modeling the Am-ZnO composite with its thorough verification by experimental probing, we stepwise examine the material's properties. The effect of ZnO surface chemistry on bonding, often neglected theoretically, is highlighted by core-level spectroscopy. In turn, band structure and charge localization alterations induced by ZnO NPs are pointed out experimentally, supplemented with the developed method for conductivity calculations. Given these results, the role of graphene, NPs, and their interface in chemiresistive signal appearance is further featured. Taken together, our results give a hint at the mechanisms underlying the interaction between the metal oxide NPs and derivatized graphene, advancing the engineering of such composites for practical applications.
The polymerization filling method is used to obtain nanocomposites based on ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and graphene at with an ultralow content of 0.0065–0.019 vol %. The melting points and degrees of crystallinity of the obtained composites are close to the corresponding characteristics of unfilled UHMWPE. The strain-strength properties under the tension of the samples of the obtained composites are studied depending on the content of graphene. It is shown that the tensile strength of the composites increases significantly with an increase in the graphene content to 0.012 vol % compared to unfilled UHMWPE with a subsequent decrease. The relative elongation changes in a similar way.
A new method of using the detonation nanodiamond with positive and negative zeta potential as a spacer for aerogels based on graphene oxide is presented. It is shown that the dosed addition of detonation nanodiamonds' particles to the suspension of graphene oxide hydrosol made it possible to triple the specific surface area of the resulting aerogel compared to graphene oxide aerogel, and this effect is more significant when nanodiamonds with a positive zeta potential are used. It was also shown that aerogels derived from graphene oxide and detonation nanodiamond with a positive zeta potential have a specific morphology with graphene oxide platelets being twisted. This effect is discussed in terms of the change in the average zeta potential of the initial mixtures. Keywords: two-component systems, carbon materials, colloid chemistry.
Polymer composites of a segregated network structure are dielectric polymer granules coated with electrically conductive nanoparticles at a low content, the quantity of the junctions between the granules determines the composites' mechanical properties, and the percolation network formed by the nanoparticles determines the electrical conductivity. Here, the morphology and electron‐transport properties in reduced graphene oxide (rGO)‐filled composites with a segregated structure based on polyvinyl chloride (PVC), poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐tetrafluoroethylene) (P(VDF‐TFE)), and ultrahigh‐molecular‐weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) are studied. Optical and electron microscopies study of the microtome‐formed cross sections have shown the morphology to be dependent on the polymer—the thinnest rGO layers are in UHMWPE‐based composites, the thicker rGO layers are in PVC‐ and P(VDF‐TFE)‐based ones. The electrical conduction of the composites and the rGO‐paper occurs through the same hopping conduction mechanisms within the wide temperature range, which allows to use the composites in applications where pure rGO is considered. Owing to thicker rGO layers open to the environment, PVC‐ and P(VDF‐TFE)‐based composites are more attractive, rather than the UHMWPE ones, in applications where layered materials are needed, for example, in lithium‐ion batteries or supercapacitors. The UHMWPE‐based composites look more promising as electrically conductive materials when mechanical strength is important.
Conductive polymer composites (CPCs) with nanocarbon fillers are at the high end of modern materials science, advancing current electronic applications. Herein, we establish the interplay between the chemistry and electrophysical properties of reduced graphene oxide (rGO), separately and as a filler for CPCs with the segregated structure conferred by the chemical composition of the initial graphene oxide (GO). A set of experimental methods, namely X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, van der Paw and temperature-dependent sheet resistance measurements, along with dielectric spectroscopy, are employed to thoroughly examine the derived materials. The alterations in the composition of oxygen groups along with their beneficial effect on nitrogen doping upon GO reduction by hydrazine are tracked with the help of XPS. The slight defectiveness of the graphene network is found to boost the conductivity of the material due to facilitating the impact of the nitrogen lone-pair electrons in charge transport. In turn, a sharp drop in material conductivity is indicated upon further disruption of the π-conjugated network, predominantly governing the charge transport. Particularly, the transition from the Mott variable hopping transport mechanism to the Efros–Shklovsky one is signified. Finally, the impact of rGO chemistry and physics on the electrophysical properties of CPCs with the segregated structure is evaluated. Taken together, our results give a hint at how GO chemistry manifests the properties of rGO and the CPC derived from it, offering compelling opportunities for their practical applications.

In this paper, we suggest a previously unknown template-directed polymerization strategy for producing graphene/polymer aerogels with elevated mechanical properties, preservation of the nanoscale pore structure, an extraordinary crystallite structure, as well as tunable electrical and hydrophobic properties. The suggested approach is studied using the reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) system as an example. We also develop a novel method of ethylene polymerization with formation of UHMWPE directly on the surface of rGO sheets prestructured as the aerogel template. At a UHMWPE content smaller than 20 wt %, composite materials demonstrate completely reversible deformation and good conductivity. An ultrahigh polymer content (more than 80 wt %) results in materials with pronounced plasticity, improved hydrophobic properties, and a Young's modulus that is more than 200 times larger than that of pure rGO aerogel. Variation of the polymer content makes it possible to tune the electro-conductive properties of the aerogel in the range from 4.8 × 10-6 to 4.9 × 10-1 S/m and adjust its hydrophobic properties. The developed approach would make it possible to create composite materials with highly developed nanostructural morphology and advanced properties controlled by the thickness of the polymer layer on the surface of graphene sheets.

The composite samples with the graphene filler content of 0.014 to 0.05 wt % have been prepared via the in situ polymerization. The effect of the ultralow content of graphene on the set of wear-resistant and tribological properties of the synthesized composited based on ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene has been studied. Weas resistance of the synthesized materials under conditions of high-speed impact of a water-sand suspension, wear during microcutting and friction wear resistance have been investigated. Furthermore, the friction coefficient on steel has been determined. The introduction of graphene into the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene has improved the resistance to abrasion during microcutting and has increased the wear resistance under the action of the water-sand suspension (the free abrasive wear).

Developing new polymer composites with special properties for 3D printing is one of the most attractive tasks. In our study, we have developed new polymer powders based on rGO-coated polyamide suitable for Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) printing. The obtained materials were characterized using optical microscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and dielectric spectroscopy. The size distribution of the powder particles, the angle of rest after an avalanche, the compactibility (Hausner ratio), the optical properties (absorption and transmission) of the powder monolayer, and the electrical conductivity of the obtained materials have been studied. It has been shown that the developed powders are suitable for the use in the framework of the SLS method, and can be applied to remove static electricity, as well as in reflective screens for electromagnetic radiation.
The development of new electrically conductive polymer composites is one of the most important research areas of composite materials science community nowadays. This work is devoted to the preparation and study of electrically conductive polymer composites with a segregated network structure with mixtures of reduced graphene oxide/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (rGO/MWCNTs) in various ratios. At a fixed value of the total mass fraction of rGO/MWCNTs (1 wt.%), the set of samples with different rGO/MWCNTs ratio was obtained and examined via scanning electron microscopy, wide range dielectric spectroscopy and tested under compression. We have shown that the use of graphene oxide in a mixture with MWCNTs makes it possible to significantly improve the uniformity of MWCNTs distribution during the formation of a filler layer on polymer particles, which leads to an increase in the electrical conductivity of the composites in comparison with samples containing only rGO or MWCNTs. It was also shown adding 1 wt.% of rGO to the polymer increases the elastic modulus by 18% compared to the pure polymer. In turn, adding of MWCNTs, there is a drop in the elastic modulus by a quarter. It was found that fillers do not affect the plastic flow initiation stress of the material, which is 21 ± 1 MPa.
