A new method of using the detonation nanodiamond with positive and negative zeta potential as a spacer for aerogels based on graphene oxide is presented. It is shown that the dosed addition of detonation nanodiamonds' particles to the suspension of graphene oxide hydrosol made it possible to triple the specific surface area of the resulting aerogel compared to graphene oxide aerogel, and this effect is more significant when nanodiamonds with a positive zeta potential are used. It was also shown that aerogels derived from graphene oxide and detonation nanodiamond with a positive zeta potential have a specific morphology with graphene oxide platelets being twisted. This effect is discussed in terms of the change in the average zeta potential of the initial mixtures. Keywords: two-component systems, carbon materials, colloid chemistry.
The properties of multilayer (up to 80 layers) nanoperiodic (period up to ~12 nm) Al 2 O 3 /Ge and Al 2 O 3 /Si/Ge/Si systems annealed in a nitrogen atmosphere at temperatures from 700 to 900°C are studied using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray techniques of photoelectron spectroscopy, diffractometry, and reflectometry, and optical methods of photoluminescence and Raman scattering. In Al 2 O 3 /Ge samples annealed at 700°C, the formation of Ge nanocrystals with a size of ~3 nm is detected, which disappear at 800–900°C, when nanocrystals of the Al 6 Ge 5 semiconductor phase of large size (>100 nm) grow. The introduction of separating layers of Si (Al 2 O 3 /Si/Ge/Si) leads to the formation of nanocrystals of the SiGe x alloy at a temperature of 800°C, above which the size of the crystallites of this phase is about ~3–4 nm. The data obtained using X-ray techniques are in good agreement with the results of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. In the Al 2 O 3 /Ge samples, photoluminescence is observed at room temperature at ~2.1 eV, and in the Al 2 O 3 /Si/Ge/Si samples, there is an additional luminescence peak at ~1.4 eV. Hydrogenation of the samples by annealing in a hydrogen atmosphere at 500°C enhances the luminescence intensity.

In this paper, we suggest a previously unknown template-directed polymerization strategy for producing graphene/polymer aerogels with elevated mechanical properties, preservation of the nanoscale pore structure, an extraordinary crystallite structure, as well as tunable electrical and hydrophobic properties. The suggested approach is studied using the reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) system as an example. We also develop a novel method of ethylene polymerization with formation of UHMWPE directly on the surface of rGO sheets prestructured as the aerogel template. At a UHMWPE content smaller than 20 wt %, composite materials demonstrate completely reversible deformation and good conductivity. An ultrahigh polymer content (more than 80 wt %) results in materials with pronounced plasticity, improved hydrophobic properties, and a Young's modulus that is more than 200 times larger than that of pure rGO aerogel. Variation of the polymer content makes it possible to tune the electro-conductive properties of the aerogel in the range from 4.8 × 10-6 to 4.9 × 10-1 S/m and adjust its hydrophobic properties. The developed approach would make it possible to create composite materials with highly developed nanostructural morphology and advanced properties controlled by the thickness of the polymer layer on the surface of graphene sheets.
We have studied the nature of optically induced short-range magnetic fluctuations occurring at 10-nm length scale during ultrafast demagnetization in ferromagnetic Co/Pt multilayers. The time resolved probing of magnetization dynamics was performed with femtosecond soft x-ray pulses at the European x-ray free-electron laser. A transient high -q magnetic scattering accompanying and directly correlated to the destruction of the maze domain network has been observed at picosecond time scale in the wave vector region of 0.2-0.8 nm-1. This high-q scattering has a purely magnetic nature and is ascribed to the optically induced short-range magnetic fluctuations developing in the disturbed but not fully destroyed magnetic domain network. Finally, we have simulated the optically induced response of the domain system using a two-temperature atomistic spin model and have concluded that the reason behind the high-q scattering is the laser-driven heating inducing thermal fluctuations of the domain magnetic structure.

Nowadays, a solvent-free method for production of high performance fibers directly from ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) reactor powder is being actively developed. It causes the interest in the morphology of the reactor particles and their behavior in thermal and mechanical fields. Changes in the phase composition in virgin particles of ultra-high molecular-weight polyethylene reactor powders and in particles of powders compressed at room temperature under different pressures were studied in real time using synchrotron radiation with heating in the range of 300–370 K. It was found that the content of the monoclinic phase in reactor powders depends on the type of catalyst used for synthesis and on the applied pressure. It is shown that there are monoclinic phases of different nature: a structurally stabilized monoclinic phase formed during synthesis, and a monoclinic phase resulting from plastic deformation during compaction at room temperature. The behavior of these phases in temperature and mechanical fields is compared.
The derivatization of graphene to engineer its band structure is a subject of significant attention nowadays, extending the frames of graphene material applications in the fields of catalysis, sensing, and energy harvesting. Yet, the accurate identification of a certain group and its effect on graphene’s electronic structure is an intricate question. Herein, we propose the advanced fingerprinting of the epoxide and hydroxyl groups on the graphene layers via core-level methods and reveal the modification of their valence band (VB) upon the introduction of these oxygen functionalities. The distinctive contribution of epoxide and hydroxyl groups to the C 1s X-ray photoelectron spectra was indicated experimentally, allowing the quantitative characterization of each group, not just their sum. The appearance of a set of localized states in graphene’s VB related to the molecular orbitals of the introduced functionalities was signified both experimentally and theoretically. Applying the density functional theory calculations, the impact of the localized states corresponding to the molecular orbitals of the hydroxyl and epoxide groups was decomposed. Altogether, these findings unveiled the particular contribution of the epoxide and hydroxyl groups to the core-level spectra and band structure of graphene derivatives, advancing graphene functionalization as a tool to engineer its physical properties.
The artificial olfaction units (or e-noses) capable of room-temperature operation are highly demanded to meet the requests of society in numerous vital applications and developing Internet-of-Things. Derivatized 2D crystals are considered as sensing elements of choice in this regard, unlocking the potential of the advanced e-nose technologies limited by the current semiconductor technologies. Herein, we consider fabrication and gas-sensing properties of On-chip multisensor arrays based on a hole-matrixed carbonylated (C-ny) graphene film with a gradually changed thickness and concentration of ketone groups of up to 12.5 at.%. The enhanced chemiresistive response of C-ny graphene toward methanol and ethanol, of hundred ppm concentration when mixing with air to match permissible exposure OSHA limits, at room-temperature operation is signified. Following thorough characterization via core-level techniques and density functional theory, the predominant role of the C-ny graphene-perforated structure and abundance of ketone groups in advancing the chemiresistive effect is established. Advancing practice applications, selective discrimination of the studied alcohols is approached by linear discriminant analysis employing a multisensor array's vector signal, and the fabricated chip's long-term performance is shown.

The new applications of nanodiamond in biology and nuclear physics require the use of products with a low content of impurities. One of the possible methods for obtaining a high-purity nanodiamond is the recently developed laser synthesis method. The aim of this work was to study the state of aggregation of laser synthesis nanodiamond particles in aqueous suspensions and to test the possibility of deaggregation of laser nanodiamond. The process of deaggregation of a laser synthesis nanodiamond is investigated. It was shown that the previously described process of deaggregation by milling with baking soda and the usual process of deaggregation give almost the same results.A solid phase from a colloidal solution of a laser synthesis nanodiamond has been isolated and investigated. The low content of impurities in the studied product was confirmed (less than 0.1% at.), the Raman, IR, and EPR spectra were studied.

The facile synthesis of biografted 2D derivatives complemented by a nuanced understanding of their properties are keystones for advancements in biosensing technologies. Herein, we thoroughly examine the feasibility of aminated graphene as a platform for the covalent conjugation of monoclonal antibodies towards human IgG immunoglobulins. Applying core-level spectroscopy methods, namely X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopies, we delve into the chemistry and its effect on the electronic structure of the aminated graphene prior to and after the immobilization of monoclonal antibodies. Furthermore, the alterations in the morphology of the graphene layers upon the applied derivatization protocols are assessed by electron microscopy techniques. Chemiresistive biosensors composed of the aerosol-deposited layers of the aminated graphene with the conjugated antibodies are fabricated and tested, demonstrating a selective response towards IgM immunoglobulins with a limit of detection as low as 10 pg/mL. Taken together, these findings advance and outline graphene derivatives’ application in biosensing as well as hint at the features of the alterations of graphene morphology and physics upon its functionalization and further covalent grafting by biomolecules.
The advent of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) has revolutionized fundamental science, from atomic to condensed matter physics, from chemistry to biology, giving researchers access to X-rays with unprecedented brightness, coherence and pulse duration. All XFEL facilities built until recently provided X-ray pulses at a relatively low repetition rate, with limited data statistics. Here, results from the first megahertz-repetition-rate X-ray scattering experiments at the Spectroscopy and Coherent Scattering (SCS) instrument of the European XFEL are presented. The experimental capabilities that the SCS instrument offers, resulting from the operation at megahertz repetition rates and the availability of the novel DSSC 2D imaging detector, are illustrated. Time-resolved magnetic X-ray scattering and holographic imaging experiments in solid state samples were chosen as representative, providing an ideal test-bed for operation at megahertz rates. Our results are relevant and applicable to any other non-destructive XFEL experiments in the soft X-ray range.
Periodic multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) attract a lot of attention nowadays being fundamentally interesting from the point of view of interface magnetism. They also provide a suitable test bench for the studies of spatially resolved magnetization dynamics at picosecond time scale conducted at x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) facilities. In the present paper we have developed a novel laser molecular beam epitaxy (LMBE) approach to grow Co/Pt multilayers on crystalline Al2O3 (0001) substrates. By applying Kerr-effect magnetometry to the samples fabricated at different conditions, we have found it essential for the appearance of PMA, to perform metal deposition in 0.03 mbar of argon and to keep Co layer thickness below 4 angstrom. Along with magnetic studies, we have investigated crystal structure and depth resolved layer composition of the fabricated Co/Pt multilayers by applying electron diffraction, x-ray diffraction and x-ray reflectometry. The combined atomic-force/magnetic-force microscopy studies have revealed a very low surface roughness of down to 1 angstrom (for the samples grown at properly optimized growth conditions) and a pronounced labyrinth pattern of magnetic domains with a periodicity of 250 nm appropriate for XFEL studies of ultrafast optical magnetization. The presented LMBE approach to fabricate magnetically ordered heterostructures with a pronounced PMA is supposed to be an important milestone on the way of facilitating future design of nanomaterials for applications in magnetic memories and for fundamental studies of ultrafast magnetization dynamics.
Few-layer graphene on β-SiC(001) functionalized with phenazine dye Neutral Red by means of diazonium chemistry has been studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure, photoemission electron microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and density functional theory calculations. The experimental data reveal the formation of a composite phenazine dye/graphene structure with a large energy gap. The molecules in this structure can be oriented both parallel and perpendicular to the graphene surface. According to scanning tunneling spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, the density of electron states in different surface areas depends on the local short-range order and the molecules’ environment. On the other hand, the photoemission spectroscopy study shows that the bottom layers of the few-layer graphene remain intact, which inherently makes the synthesized layered composite a low-dimensional metal/semiconductor heterostructure. In addition, photoemission electron microscopy imaging shows a high homogeneity of the dye-modified graphene on a micrometer scale.
