Background. The reasons and consequences of people's activity on social networks have not been sufficiently studied. Most studies have focused on identifying the dangers and risks associated with posting self-portraits on social networks, but it is an open question as to whether such behavior serves to increase people's psychological well-being. Objective. We asked ourselves what are the main motives for publishing selfies and whether online activity contributes to psychological well-being. Design. Our study involved 96 respondents from Moscow, mainly psycho logy students, who provided information about their activity on social networks, and completed questionnaires on their motivation, social support, and psychological well-being. Results. Three main motives for publishing selfies were identified: 1) to increase self-esteem; 2) maintain social contacts; and 3) preserve and exchange information. The higher the ratio of selfies taken to preserve information, the higher was the user's psychological well-being. We found significant differences between the characteristics of those participants with high and low activity, and larger and smaller numbers of "friends" in social networks. For those with high activity, their sense of psychological well-being was largely determined by interaction with others. For these persons, communication (including with virtual contacts) was the important resource of well-being. The other group was less dependent on others, and for them, psychological well-being was not related to their activity on social networks. Conclusion. Our results confirm the connection between the personality traits and characteristics of the respondents' network behavior and their psychological well-being. The study showed that the type of correlation constellation differs between groups of respondents depending upon how much or how little they are oriented toward social support.
The article considers various approaches to the study of wisdom, the development of philosophical and psychological understanding of this phenomenon. The typical dynamics of research approaches is shown - from wisdom as a cognitive or personal characteristic to a holistic multi-aspect phenomenon. The similarities and differences of existing explicit theories are demonstrated, as well as the culture, age and gender-related features of implicit ideas of wisdom and peculiarities of its manifestation. In this regard, the limitations of existing methods for measuring wisdom are noted. Prospects for further research are indicated.
The current study examined the topic of application and experiencing the anesthesia as an interdisciplinary medical and psychological issue. The connection of deep personal meanings and experiences of both the subject of anesthesia (child) and their parents was noted. Mothers' ideas about anesthesia, in connection with their teenage children's surgery for a benign tumor of the musculoskeletal system has been scrutinized. The study involved adolescents aged 12-16 (n = 44) who underwent surgery under endotracheal general anesthesia (n = 27) or regional anesthesia (n = 17) and their mothers. We used the "Perceived Stress Scale" (for adults and for children), the authors' "Perception of Anesthesia" questionnaire, and the Color attitude test. Mothers whose children got endotracheal general anesthesia had higher scores on Help and Right Choice descriptors than those whose children got the regional anesthesia. Child's and mother's anxiety level were related before and after surgery according to the data from the Color test, but their levels of perceived stress correlated only before surgery. Mothers with high level of stress differ from other groups by the "Uncertainty, unknown" factor, but do not differ by the "Acceptance of the situation" factor. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of mutual communication between the doctor, the patient and his or her social environment for maintaining the patient's psychological well-being during treatment and for the success of such treatment.
The work examines the perception of faces by adolescents and their mothers under the stress associated with the surgery. We hypothesized that stress can facilitate attribution of negative emotions to neutral faces, while feelings of support from the mother and others can play the opposite role. This means that the bias of emotions attributed to neutrals can be used to assess the level of stress. The study involved: adolescents N1 = 46, 12—17 years old, (M = 14.02, SD = 1.57), 59% boys who were treated in the department of pediatric bone pathology and adolescent orthopedics of National Medical Research Center of Traumatology and Orthopedics named after N.N. Priorov, as well as their mothers N2 = 46 (32—51 years old, M = 41.24, SD = 4.47). The following methods were used: Social support questionnaire SOZU-22, Varga-Stolin parental attitude questionnaire, Perceived stress scales for children and adults, Pain scale. Respondents were asked to chose the most suitable adjective to each of 11 images of emotionally neutral faces. The hypotheses put forward were generally not confirmed. For mothers, despite the absence of changes in the level of stress after child’s surgery treatment, the frequency of choosing positive emotions significantly increases and the frequency of attributing negative emotions to neutral faces decreases. In children, there is a significant decrease in stress after surgery, but the change in the assessment of neutral faces is associated not with the stress level, but with the assessment of pain, as well as with the characteristics of the mother’s attitude and characteristics of social support. At the same time, differences were revealed between the results of girls and boys.
The actual problem of interdisciplinary projects organizing is discussed. The purpose of the article is to justify the principles of planning and conducting the interdisciplinary medico-psychological research, in identifying its features in comparison with pseudo-interdisciplinary approaches. Types of interdisciplinary research are examined, distinctions are made between the true and pseudo-interdisciplinary approaches. The principles of true interdisciplinary research are formulated — the principle of choosing the object of study, the principle of determining the coordinates of the subject area of research, the hypothetico-deductive principle of interdisciplinary research and the principle of unity of interdisciplinary project methodology. The content of each principle is revealed by the example of medico-psychological research currently being carried out by the team of employees of the Institute of Psychology RAS and the National Medical Research Center of Traumatology and Orthopedics named after N.N. Priorov. It is shown that the system-structural approach to conducting the interdisciplinary medico-psychological research consists in coordinating theoretical constructs and empirical variables in accordance with the given coordinates of the research subject field and specific criteria for assessing the physical and mental state of the object of study. It is shown that the selected criteria allow, without leveling the specifics of individual scientific disciplines — medicine and psychology — to form a unified subject field of research and to develop an approach relevant for solving scientific and practical problems.
This work is devoted to study of the perception and recognition of features and characteristics of a human face that determine such important characteristic of man, as his health. However, the ambiguity of the interpretation of the term “health” in psychological literature leads to certain difficulties in operationalization of this concept and formalization of criteria of its assessment. The results of the study indicate the need for the study of perception, not only concerning the permanent characteristics of the human face, but also the importance of taking into account the variable parameters - facial expressions and complexion
Trends in psychological researches devoted to the problem of face perception by different kinds of animals as a source of subjective significant information are discussed. Broaden interpretation of term "face" that makes it possible to use it for not only man or primates, but for other animals including invertebrates as well is proposed. Application of evolutional approach to researches on face perception is based. Original methodological approaches and new findings on perception of face as an "organ" of social interaction, sign of individual differentiation, and source of situational cognitive and emotionally significant information are presented. Faces are shown to be significant objects for many animals. It is argued that high significance of visual information channel and importance of social interactions are premises for the development of ability for faces' discrimination, categorization and remembering. The results of researches on specific neuronal and behavioral responses of representatives of several kinds of animals to the face as a specific type of visual stimuli are presented. Increase in local activity of homological regions of brain when other individuals are recognized or in response to their emotional sate in man, primates and in sheep too is confirmed. Similar perceptual phenomena such as inversion effect, effect of "own race", etc. are marked.
We examined the effect of stimuli and observer's age to the correlation between attractiveness and estimations of kindness, openness, strength, courage and intelligence made by Russian preschoolers (5 year old), school pupils (9-10 years) and University students (19-24 years). We used color photos of four age groups: newborns, 7-year-olds, 20-year-olds and elder people (>65 years). The analysis confirmed the significant positive correlations between attractiveness and the majority of traits’ ratings. The hypothesis about weakening of the correlation between attractiveness ratings and believes about personal traits with observers age has not been confirmed.
The role of experimental factors in sex categorization of faces was studied. When pictures of unknown to probationers faces are presented, such two conditions as static or dynamic picture is used in experiment and open or masked ears are on the picture influence significantly on its sex categorization. Face direction (3/4 to the right or 3/4 to the left) doesn't exert influence on sex categorization of adult faces.
