The SR-micro-XRF method was used to search for microparticles of extraterrestrial matter in the bottom sediments of Lake Zapovednoye, located 60 km from the epicentre of the explosion of the Tunguska cosmic body (TCB) in 1908. The material of bottom sediments dating back to 1908–1910 was studied. The samples for the study were prepared in the form of a powder applied to a conductive adhesive tape, which made it possible to combine the data of optical observations, electron microscopy, and micro-XRF scanning. The experiments were carried out at the Large-Scale Research Facilities "Kurchatov Centre for Synchrotron Research" using a confocal X-ray microscope developed at the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics SB RAS. The data obtained indicate the presence of microparticles with an increased Ni/Fe ratio, possibly of extraterrestrial origin.
We have tried to accurately describe and generalize spatial distribution of the spread function for different cases of alignment of an X-ray polycapillary lens in angular and transverse coordinates. A series of experiments is carried out to determine the spread function of the lens in the areas corresponding to significant changes of the area of its focus in the longitudinal direction. An analysis of the results allowed us to propose two approximating models that can potentially approximate spread function with satisfactory accuracy for most typical cases of lens adjustment. A detailed analysis of the results of three series of experiments to determine the SF in a vast region of space with different cases of adjustment of a polycapillary lens made it possible to show that the models are universal and in good agreement with experimental SF distribution.
An anomalous layer enriched with chemical elements indicating the presence of terrigenous matter was discovered in the sediment core of Zapovednoe Lake located 60 km from the epicenter of the Tunguska event (1908) using synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (SR–XRF). Radioisotope measurements indicate that the age of the layer is consistent with the date of the catastrophe. Apparently, the anomalous layer was formed as a result of an intense terrigenous matter inflow from the water catchment area due to massive forest falls and subsequent wildfires caused by the Tunguska event. Thus, it is established that targeted searches for microparticles of extraterrestrial origin can be carried out in the discovered and dated anomalous bottom sediment layer.
A medieval Russian bronze pendant icon with enamel images, dated to the period from the 12th to the first half of the 13th century was studied. The investigation was performed using neutron and synchrotron tomography, X-ray fluorescence analysis, and neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis. The product was found to have no strips dividing enamels of different colors, whereas strip fragments were revealed deep in the enamel layer. The pendant fabrication technology has been reconstructed.
Two samples of the Chelyabinsk meteorite are examined via scanning synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence microanalysis. The spatial distribution of several chemical elements is studied, and the patterns of localization are obtained for germanium and copper. The most pronounced correlations between elements are investigated: the relationship between the germanium and copper localization and specific minerals.
Abstract The general layout for Specialized Synchrotron Radiation Source 4th generation SSRS 4 is under development by leading of National Research Center “Kurchatov institute”. In the framework of a collaborative project with European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) supported by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the applied research on determination of the configuration and key technical parameters for the control and beam diagnostic systems for 4th generation Specialized Synchrotron Radiation Source – SSRS- 4 is going on. The preliminary view of the proposed control and diagnostic system is presented and discussed. SSRS-4 inherits the experience of the scientific community including a great ESRF expertise in control system development (as founder of TANGO), robust diagnostics and long operational experience on ESRF’s accelerator.
