Carson MuCullers, by means of exaggeration and symbolization, through the description of several characters of lower classes, revealed the reality that people had difficulties communicating with and understanding one another during the process of industrialization in American society, and x-rayed the substance of solitude. Therefore, the book is not only a dag- ger to the crime of capitalism, but a shell fired at racialism in America as well.
