Jeff Keller said, “Attitude is everything”. Indeed, attitude is everything and is a vital component of human personality. The world perceives us by our attitude; but have you thought about what is an attitude, how it gets anchored in our persona, what are its components, how many types of attitudes are found in humans, how its awareness evolved in us, can attitudes be changed and what importance does it have in our life? This paper attempts to answer the above questions. Needless to say, attitude is a small thing which makes a big difference!
It is indeed paradoxical to think about thought. But not only me but innumerable thinkers have been thinking about where do the thoughts come from? In this paper while taking cognizance of other thinkers, I have added my own thoughts on the subject. As per me, thinking is also a sense like five known senses-seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching. And like these senses, there is a sense organ for thinking and there is a portion of brain which does the processing of thinking signals which after reaching its sense organ get into the processing zones in the brain and get processed to manifest the thought perception. Where does this sense organ reside and from where thoughts emerge and reach this sense organ and where and what are the portions of the brain which do the processing-these are the questions which this paper tries to find answer.
Pain hurts, be it physical or mental (non-physical). None of us escape it but how many of us have given a thought to which pain is more severe the physical or non-physical. Just consider the famous lines by C.S. Lewis -” Mental pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it is more common and also harder to bear. The frequent attempt to conceal mental pain increases the burden; it is easier to say, “My tooth is aching” than to say, “My heart is broken”. These lines speak volumes about the emotional pain’s intensity over the physical pain. In this paper, we shall be delving deep into facets of pain both physical as well as non-physical and shall understand their meanings, their comparative imprints on the affected person, the brain processes underlying both types of pain, and ways and means of treating both pains. Also, we shall examine whether the end results of pain are always negative or sometimes the pain leaves a “spark” which proves to be a great positive game-changer.
Hypnotism, the study of hypnosis has many facets which may not be known to the common man. This paper will make the readers aware of the origin of Hypnosis and will take them on a journey of the history of hypnosis, acquaint the readers to the stalwarts in the field and enlighten them on the evolution of this mysterious field. We shall explore the process in detail and shall learn how hypnosis is done, what effect does it leave on the subject being hypnotized, what changes happen in the body and the brain of the subject, how the subject responds to the suggestions of the hypnotizer, how the patients suffering from pain, addiction and psychiatric disorders respond positively and get treated by hypnotherapy. We shall also explore the dark side of hypnosis and shall see the similarity between hypnosis and parapsychological phenomena and how hypnosis can help in parapsychological research. We shall also examine whether the hypnosis phenomenon is scientific. On the whole, we shall be looking at many perspectives of hypnosis in the paper.
Human emotions are part and parcel of human life. Since the mind is never without thoughts, humans are never without emotions because emotions are embedded in thoughts. When I started researching this topic, I was overwhelmed by its vastness. In this paper, I have restricted myself to understanding the meaning and defining human emotions and explored different kinds of emotion; examined the impact of emotions on our body; peeped into brain activities during emotions. I have also dwelt on the historical background or emotions and their significance on our work life and touched briefly on the enormous topic of emotional intelligence and have included a comparison of IQ (Intelligence Quotient) with EQ (emotional intelligence quotient).
The human mind is very innovative. It creates wonder by inventing to meet needs. Someone rightly said necessity is the mother of invention. With the need of communicating instantly, the human mind developed telephones, thus, conquering time and distance for the hearing sensation. But the further quest prompted it to conquer time and distance for the seeing sensation and we had video calling and live telecasts on TV. But the real conquering of time and distance by the human mind in totality will happen when it can devise ways and means to teleport sense of smelling, tasting, and touching so that the whole environment containing all five senses is brought in our close proximity from thousands of kilometers so that we can, not only, see and hear but also can enjoy the smell, taste, and touch. Thus, in the real sense, the incidents are brought to us eliminating the barrier of time and distance. For this to happen, the human mind has to advance the technology to ensure that the remaining senses of smell, taste, and touch reach us instantly from over thousands of kilometers — we have already done it for sight and sound. Can the human mind do it?
Consciousness is a widely discussed topic but the real understanding is still elusive. In scientific parlance it is considered a “Hard Problem.” In normal parlance we are conscious when others see us alert, able to think and perform activities in normal way. But when we become inert and are unconscious in Coma, even the Doctors are unable to tell when we shall be able to regain consciousness. Why? Because no one on this earth knows what is consciousness, where does it reside and how it goes off from the body and how does it come back. Brain and mind do have correlation with consciousness because the neural circuitry does impact working of our body and even slight damage results in very evident change in motor and mental functions. The motor and mental actions performed by the body happen only after manifestation of consciousness but how it manifests is not known. It may or may not reside in brain circuitry, I say this, because major portion of brain is still unexplored. If Neuroscience advances to find its location in brain circuitry then it would mean that consciousness is not immortal and dies with our death but till then we can assume it to be eternal and it may even reside outside our body; may be in ether. Thinkers have given deep thoughts and attempted to give explanation about consciousness. This paper tries to assimilate the attempted explanations and adds the authors own logical thinking to come to an updated understanding about consciousness which still falls short of a final view as many questions still need answer before a final understanding on consciousness can surface up.
Perception, many a time, manifests in bizarre ways. Sometimes we look at things but do not see/perceive them and at other times we perceive the things that do not exist. Brain is the area where perception is processed and even slight damage to the brain turns perception into bizarre events. There are people born with a brain circuitry which makes them perceive a color when they look at a digit and there are instances when a person possesses a brain which makes him/her remember minutest details of every day spent in his/her life. These are few of the bizarre happenings detailed in this paper. Perception, scientifically, is said to happen through the use of known five senses-seeing, hearing, smelling, touching, and tasting but there are occasions when we perceive without use of these senses, maybe there is a really a sixth sense. Perception has many bizarre manifestations and this paper takes a look at them. It is interesting to be aware about them.
