Human recombinant erythropoietin adsorbed on poly(butyl)cyanoacrylate nanoparticles and administered intraperitoneally in a dose of 0.05 mg/kg exhibited a neuroprotective effect in experimental intracerebral posttraumatic hematomas (hemorrhagic stroke) and reduced animal mortality. Human recombinant erythropoietin, native and adsorbed on lactic and glycolic acid copolymer-based nanoparticles, exhibited no antistroke effect on this model. Analysis of reverse transcription PCR products showed that human recombinant erythropoietin adsorbed on poly(butyl)cyanoacrylate nanoparticles more than 2-fold increased the expression of BDNF and NGF neurotrophins in the rat brain frontal cortex and hippocampus.
The study of 820 histories was carried out in order to ascertain characteristic features of clinical course of acute pneumonia in the conditions of Afghanistan. All these patients underwent treatment in the Central Military Hospital of the 40th Army in Kabul in 1980-1989. The immunity status, the the level of peroxide oxidation of lipids (POL), and the state of antioxidant system (AOS) were also studied in 132 patients. The clinical course of pneumonia in comparison with its manifestation on the territory of Russia was characterized by pronounced intoxication of an organism, broncho-obstruction, vast inflammatory infiltration, hyperactivization of the immune system, POL, and AOS exhaustion. All these factors correspond to the syndrome of disadoptative disorders. Medications recommended for complex treatment: antioxidants, immunoglobulins, albumin, low-molecular dextrans.
Clinical symptoms of the initial stage of the disease (before the onset of pathognomonic signs of amoebiasis--the formation of ulcers in the colon) have been analysed in 287 patients with intestinal amoebiasis (IA). The following variants of the clinical pattern have been identified: slow-progressing IA (59.2% of the patients examined) and fast-progressing IA (40.8% of the patients examined). In 5 patients with body eight deficit and clinical manifestations of vitamin C and B deficiency the disease assumed a fulminant course. The patients' condition was considered severe or very severe already on the first days of the infection. The results of endoscopic studies (rectoromanoscopy, fiber colonoscopy) demonstrate that the formation of amoeba-induced damages in the colon mucosa takes place by the 6th-14th day of the disease onset.
A probe was constructed containing a fragment of DNA replica of hepatitis A virus (HAV) RNA within bacteriophage M13 single-stranded DNA which allowed 10(-12) g of viral RNA to be tested. Hybridization of 32P-labeled probe with total RNA from 559 samples of blood, saliva, and urine from patients with viral hepatitis A revealed the presence of HAV RNA in 14% of the samples. In the 1st week of the jaundice period HAV RNA was detected in 40% (15 positive samples out of the 39 tested), in the 2nd week 26% (14 out of 54). HAV RNA was demonstrated in 20 out of 236 blood samples from subjects in a focus of HA outbreak. Six out of 9 subjects subsequently developing the disease were detected 7-10 days before the onset of the clinical symptoms. The proposed method may be useful for detection of HAV carriers in the latent period for their isolation in order to prevent further development of epidemic.
Fibrocolonoscopy findings from 131 diarrhea patients proved the procedure valuable for early diagnosis of amebiasis and control of the treatment efficacy. Fibrocolonoscopy helps to establish the true picture and the scope of the colon mucosa involvement, identification of dysenteric ameba trophozoites in the mucosal bioptic specimens being the final diagnostic criterion. The procedure facilitates regulation of the treatment duration. In the study the recovery in the mild disease was documented 25-30 days after the treatment onset, in moderate-severity contamination it took 40-45 days to eliminate the infection.
The state of immunity was studied in 28 burned patients with deep lesions on skin before and after autodermoplasty. In 23 patients with a complete take of transplants the immune indices were within normality. In 5 patients with a complete on partial lysis of the transplanted skin there was an increased amount of "active" T-lymphocytes, "stable" T-lymphocytes and lymphocytes forming rosettes with autoerythrocytes. After immunodepressive therapy the immune indices became normal and the following autodermoplastic procedures gave a successful grafting.
