physicist and science organizer, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), member of RAS Presidium, and research supervisor of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna. Viktor Anatol'evich was born on December 11, 1941 in the town of Taiga, Novosibirsk region (now Kemerovo region). He entered the PhysicoMathematical Department of the Far Eastern State University and, in 1964, graduated from the Physical Department of Leningrad State University, the Chair of Theoretical Physics, headed by V A Fock. V AMatveev's scientific work began at the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics at JINR in Dubna. There, in 1967, he defended his candidate thesis, ``Dispersion sum rules and the questions of elementary particle symmetry,'' and, in 1972, his doctoral thesis, ``A quasi-potential method in the high-energy strong-interaction theory.'' Viktor Anatol'evich Matveev is a brilliant representative of N N Bogoliubov's school. There, under Bogoliubov's guidance in an inimitable and benevolent atmosphere of scientific creativity, Matveev's talent as a researcher in the area of theoretical physics flourished. In 1965±1966,VAMatveev, togetherwithBVStruminskii and A N Tavkhelidze, carried out studies that played the key role in the formulation of the quark hadron theory. In these studies, the comprehensive development of the color quark model and the quark theory of electromagnetic and weak meson and baryon decays was fostered, electromagnetic mass splitting in isotopic hadron multiplets was explained, and higher hadron resonances were interpreted as quark system excitations. V A Matveev and the group of his co-authors were awarded the 1973 Lenin Komsomol Prize for the series of studies, ``Approximate methods of quantum field theory in high-energy physics.'' A very important research area of V A Matveev's is the search for dynamic symmetries in high-energy physics and the discovery on their basis of general laws apparent in particle interaction. In a series of studies, performed together with R M Muradyan and A N Tavkhelidze, the self-similarity principle was formulated, which made it possible to develop a unified approach to the description of scale-invariant behavior of deep inelastic and inclusive high-energy processes. The well-known Matveev ±Muradyan ±Tavkhelidze quark counting rules expressing the general laws of elastic hadron scattering were obtained on the basis of notions concerning scale invariance and the model of quasi-independent quarks. In 1987, this work was registered as a discovery. Widely known is V A Matveev's contribution to the development of quantum field theory methods, the elaboration of relativistic quark models of hadrons, the formulation of the quark nuclear theory and analysis of themanifestations of quark degrees of freedom of atomic nuclei, and the examination of the vacuum structure in gauge theories. V A Matveev put forward the conception of a hidden color of nuclei, which plays an important role in describing the structure of experimentally observed multiquark hadron states, and pointed out the essential importance of quark degrees of freedom for the comprehension of the nuclear structure at small distances. The problem of baryon matter instability for ultrahigh baryon densities was first stated and solved in a series of studies by V AMatveev carried out together with V A Rubakov, ANTavkhelidze, V F Tokarev, andME Shaposhnikov. There was a widespread reaction to the analysis, performed by V A Matveev, together with N V Krasnikov, of the potential of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN with the aim of searching for supersymmetry in the physics of fundamental interactions.
