We describe our kt-resummation model for total cross-sections and show its application to pp and ¯pp scattering. The model uses mini-jets to drive the rise of the cross-section and soft gluon resummation in the infrared region to transform the violent rise of the mini-jet cross-section into a logarithmic behaviour in agreement with the Froissart bound.

A previously successful model for purely hadronic total cross-sections, based on QCD minijets and soft-gluon resummation, is here applied to the total photoproduction cross section. We find that our model in the gamma p case predicts a rise with energy stronger than in the pp -pbarp case.
We present the predictions of a model for proton-proton total cross-section at LHC. It takes into account both hard partonic processes and soft gluon emission effects to describe the proper high energy behavior and to respect the Froissart bound.
Inclusion of down to zero-momentum gluons and their k(t) resummation is shown to quench the too fast rise of the mini jet cross-section and thereby obtain realistic total cross-sections.

We describe a QCD motivated model for total cross-sections which uses the eikonal representation and incorporates QCD mini-jets to drive the rise with energy of the cross-section, while the impact parameter distribution is obtained through the Fourier transform of the transverse momentum distribution of soft gluons emitted in the parton-parton interactions giving rise to mini-jets in the final state. A singular but integral expression for the running coupling constant in the infrared region is part of this model.
We discuss the effect of infrared soft gluons on the asymptotic behaviour of the total cross-section. We use a singular but integrable expression for the strong coupling constant in the infrared limit and relate its behaviour to the satisfaction of the Froissart bound, giving a specific phenomenological example.
AIM:A series of 5 patients with osteonecrosis of the jaws possibly related to the use of bisphosphonates is presented. A brief review of the literature is also proposed.METHODS:A retrospective review of patients who received bisphosphonates and who developed osteonecrosis of the jaws following minor oral surgery was performed.RESULTS:In all 5 patients, a tooth extraction preceded the onset of osteonecrosis of the mandible. Patients were on chronic use of intravenous bisphosphonates. The presenting lesions was a nonhealing extraction socket and an exposed jawbone. Biopsy of the bone lesions showed no evidence of metastatic involvement. Antibiotic therapy, conservative debridement and, in some cases, bone sequestrectomy were performed.CONCLUSIONS:Osteonecrosis of the jaws appears to have a relationship with the use of bisphosphonates. It is important that medical oncologists and dentists become aware of this possible complication in order to perform minor oral surgery prior to starting bisphosphonates treatment.
The DEEPSSI project is a steam injector research programme. Among thermal-hydraulic passive systems, the steam injectors (also called "condensing ejectors" or "steam jet pumps") are very interesting apparatus with very specific characteristics (high velocity, very low pressure). The envisaged reactor application is the Steam Generator Emergency FeedWater System (EFWS) of Pressurised Water Reactors (PWRs). The heart of this project is the development and the testing of an innovative steam injector design. Three experimental facilities are involved: CLAUDIA in France, IETI in Italy and IMP-PAN in Poland. In these facilities, different design options have been tested and some significant improvements of the initial design have been obtained.In addition to the experimental studies, the development of a steam injector computational model has been undertaken in order to model industrial systems based on steam injectors. The one-dimensional module of the system code CATHARE2 has been chosen to be the basis of this model. The first results obtained have confirmed the capabilities of CATHARE2 to describe the steam injector thermal-hydraulics. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
M-mode and two-dimensional echocardiograms were obtained in a patient with aortic dissection (De Bakey type 1). The M-mode echocardiogram showed an image resembling to an aortic valve with a left coronary cusp and eccentric diastolic echoes. The M-mode and two-dimensional echocardiograms recorded at a more distal level showed that this image was produced by the systo-diastolic movements of the torn intima. Such an echocardiographic finding should suggest the presence of an aortic dissection.
With ever increasing frequency potentially dangerous interactions are reported between Cardiac Glycosides and other drugs, particularly the antiarrhythmic one. The AA, carried out this work with the intent of studying the possible modifications produced by Q and A on the SDL. First of all the AA. retrospectively studied the SDL of patients treated with the associations Q-D and A-D and this SDL was compared with the SDL of patients treated with D alone. Then 10 subjects treated sequentially, at first with D alone and after with the Q-D (5 p.) and A-D (5 p.) association, were studied. The results obtained confirm the data of other AA. regarding the Q-D interaction; in fact, in the presence of this antiarrhythmic drug, the SDL increase significantly following the concomitant pharmacological effects of the Cardiac Glycosides. The SDL on the contrary seem not be influenced by the A-D association. The AA. then reviewed the literature about the mechanism of the Q-D interaction. The majority of the AA. agree outlining a reduction of the Volume of Distribution and of D Clearance, in consequence of the concomitant administration of Q, which would explain the high SDL obtained. In conclusion the AA. suggest, when the Q-D association is mandatory, a 50% reduction of the D maintenance dose and to check periodically the ECG and SDL.
