We have carried out a detailed investigation of eclipsing binary star NT Aps using high cadence photometric observations from the TESS satellite and time-series spectra from EFOSC2 at ESO's New Technology Telescope.a We have, for the first time, determined precise system parameters for this W UMa-type late-type contact binary. Our analysis indicates that the system is composed of two solar-like stars with mass ratio of q=0.31 and orbital period of 0.29475540 +/- 0.00000035 days. These values are typical for common envelope contact binaries. However, the system does not exhibit strong magnetic activity in the form of frequent flaring and large starspots, even if large flare rates have been earlier predicted for this system. This lack of strong magnetic activity further strengthens the earlier indications that the contact binaries are less magnetically active than those of detached chromospherically active binaries with similar parameters.
Study Objective The aim of this study is to improve the effectiveness of infertility treatment in patients with POI using new surgical technologies with comprehensive diagnosis of thyroid function. Design Level II, Canadian Task Force Setting National Referral Center, Department of Operative Gynecology. Patients or Participants A comprehensive treatment of infertility was performed in 127 patients of reproductive age with POI, including the stages of outpatient counseling, preoperative preparation of the examined patients with comprehensive diagnosis including thyroid function, surgical treatment and postoperative management with ovarian function stimulation in the presence of conditions and indications. Interventions All patients included in the study underwent a one-stage surgical method for activating of ovarian function during surgery according to the method of Prof. L.V. Adamyan. Measurements and Main Results Using new variants of enzyme immunoassay, a significantly higher frequency of detection of serum autoantibodies to steroidogenic enzymes, FSH, estradiol, progesterone and thyroid peroxidase was shown in patients with POI compared with women with normal ovarian reserve. The clinical efficacy of complex treatment of infertility in patients with reduced ovarian reserve was evaluated with the development of their own clinical and laboratory criteria for the appropriateness of using methods of surgical activation of ovarian tissue from the standpoint of reproductive function. Conclusion It has been established that infertility treatment in patients with reduced ovarian reserve, subable to use methods of surgical activation of ovarian tissue, can be effective in women under 40 years of age with idiopathic premature ovarian insufficiency at occult and biochemical stages, in the absence of combined factors of infertility. Also, the results obtained contribute to the identification of the most effective autoimmune markers of premature ovarian failure, which can be used for diagnosis, clarification of pathogenesis and search for new approaches to therapy of early stages of the disease.
A detailed investigation of the magnetic properties of young Sun-like stars can provide valuable information on our Sun's magnetic past and its impact on the early Earth. We determine the properties of the moderately rotating young Sun-like star kappa Ceti's magnetic and activity cycles using 50 years of chromospheric activity data and six epochs of spectropolarimetric observations. The chromospheric activity was determined by measuring the flux in the Ca II H and K lines. A generalised Lomb-Scargle periodogram and a wavelet decomposition were used on the chromospheric activity data to establish the associated periodicities. The vector magnetic field of the star was reconstructed using the technique of Zeeman Doppler imaging on the spectropolarimetric observations. Our period analysis algorithms detect a 3.1 year chromospheric cycle in addition to the star's well-known ~6 year cycle period. Although the two cycle periods have an approximate 1:2 ratio, they exhibit an unusual temporal evolution. Additionally, the spectropolarimetric data analysis shows polarity reversals of the star's large-scale magnetic field, suggesting a ~10 year magnetic or Hale cycle. The unusual evolution of the star's chromospheric cycles and their lack of a direct correlation with the magnetic cycle establishes kappa Ceti as a curious young Sun. Such complex evolution of magnetic activity could be synonymous with moderately active young Suns, which is an evolutionary path that our own Sun could have taken.

ABSTRACT Today, the Far East has several programs that should facilitate the results-based management of the macroregion. However, in their present form these programs will not provide the intended results. It is argued that these programs need to be radically revised on a scientific basis, while integrating the real conditions and factors of the reproduction of the regional economy. While maintaining the macroregion’s extraction of natural resources, there should be a shift toward renewable resources. Increasing the demographic potential of the Far East should be a regional development priority. This requires changing the structure and dynamics of the economy of the Far Eastern Federal District.
The electrical response of an electrolytic cell to an external ac excitation is analysed by solving the equations of the Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) continuum model for two ions (ambipolar) and one mobile ion diffusive systems. The theoretical predictions of the ambipolar system, formed by positive ions of mobility mu(p) and negative ions of mobility mu(m), are investigated in the limit in which one of the mobilities goes to zero. The analysis reveals that these predictions correspond to the ones arising from the one mobile ion diffusive system only in the frequency range omega >> omega(D)mu(m)/mu(p), in which omega(D) is the Debye's frequency. For very low frequencies, it shows that the physical system formed by two mobile ions, one of which has a very low mobility, is clearly distinct from the physical system in which just one of the ions is mobile. We argue that apparent deviations of the experimental spectra from the predictions of the PNP model in the low frequency region, usually interpreted as an interfacial property, may be connected with the difference in the diffusion coefficients of cations and anions.
Here, we report on the detection of a range of quasi-periodic pulsations (20-120 s; QPPs) observed during flaring activity of several magnetically active dMe stars, namely AF Psc, CR Dra, GJ 3685A, Gl 65, SDSS J084425.9+513830, and SDSS J144738.47+035312.1 in the GALEX NUV filter. Based on a solar analogy, this work suggests that many of these flares may be triggered by external drivers creating a periodic reconnection in the flare current sheet or an impulsive energy release giving rise to an avalanche of periodic bursts that occur at time intervals that correspond to the detected periods, thus generating QPPs in their rising and peak phases. Some of these flares also show fast QPPs in their decay phase, indicating the presence of fast sausage mode oscillations either driven externally by periodic reconnection or intrinsically in the post-flare loop system during the flare energy release.
We present the results of a series of short radio observations of six ultracool dwarfs made using the upgraded Very Large Array in S (2-4GHz) and C (4-7GHz) bands. LSR J1835+ 3259 exhibits a 100 per cent right-hand circularly polarized burst that shows intense narrow-band features with a fast negative frequency drift of about -30 MHz s(-1). They are superimposed on a fainter broad-band emission feature with a total duration of about 20 min, bandwidth of about 1 GHz, centred at about 3.5 GHz, and a slow positive frequency drift of about 1 MHz s(-1). This makes it the first such event detected below 4 GHz and the first one exhibiting both positive and negative frequency drifts. Polarized radio emission is also seen in 2MASS J00361617+ 1821104 and NLTT 33370, while LP 349-25 and TVLM 513-46546 have unpolarized emission and BRI B0021-0214 was not detected. We can reproduce the main characteristics of the burst from LSR J1835+ 3259 using a model describing the magnetic field of the dwarf as a tilted dipole. We also analyse the origins of the quiescent radio emission and estimate the required parameters of the magnetic field and energetic electrons. Although our results are non-unique, we find a set of models that agree well with the observations.
We report optical charge-coupled device (CCD) photometry of the recently identified symbiotic star EF Aquilae (EF Aql). Our observations in the Johnson V and B bands clearly show the presence of stochastic light variations with an amplitude of about 0.2 mag on a time scale of minutes. The observations point toward a white dwarf (WD) as the hot component in the system. It is the 11th object among more than 200 symbiotic stars known with detected optical flickering. Estimates of the mass accretion rate onto the WD and the mass loss rate in the wind of the Mira secondary star lead to the conclusion that less than 1% of the wind is captured by the WD. Eight further candidates for the detection of flickering in similar systems are suggested.
Knowledge of the stellar content near the Sun is important for a broad range of topics ranging from the search for planets to the study of Milky Way structure. The most powerful method for identifying potentially nearby stars is proper motion (PM) surveys. All old optical surveys avoid, or are at least substantially incomplete, near the Galactic plane. The depth and breadth of the “Vista Variables in Vía Láctea” (VVV) near-IR survey significantly improves this situation. Taking advantage of the VVV survey database, we have measured PMs in the densest regions of the MW bulge and southern plane in order to complete the census of nearby objects. We have developed a custom PM pipeline based on VVV catalogues from the Cambridge Astronomy Survey Unit (CASU), by comparing the first epoch of JHKS with the multi-epoch KSbands acquired later. Taking advantage of the large time baseline between the 2MASS and the VVV observations, we also obtained 2MASS-VVV PMs. We present a nearIR proper motion catalogue for the whole area of the VVV survey, which includes 3003 moving stellar sources. All of these have been visually inspected and are real PM objects. Our catalogue is in very good agreement with the proper motion data supplied in IR catalogues outside the densest zone of the MW. The majority of the PM objects in our catalogue are nearby M-dwarfs, as expected. This new database allow us to identify 57 common proper motion binary candidates, among which are two new systems within 30 pc of the Sun.
The final, definitive version of this paper has been published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Vol. 464(1): 1247-1258, January 2017, DOI: 10.1093/mnras/stw2357, first published on line September 16, 2016, published by Oxford University Press on behalf of MNRAS.
We present the results of low-resolution optical spectroscopy with OSIRIS/GTC (Optical System for Imaging and Low Resolution Integrated Spectroscopy/Gran Telescopio Canarias) for a sample of ultracool dwarfs. For a subsample of seven objects, based on 2 Micron Sky Survey (2MASS) NIR photometric colours, a 'photometric' spectral type is determined and compared to the results of the optical spectroscopy. For the stars, showing Ha line in emission, equivalent widths were measured, and the ratio ofH alpha to bolometric luminosity were calculated. We find that two dwarfs show the presence of magnetic activity over long periods, LP 326-21 - quasi-constant-like, and 2MASS J17071830+6439331 - variable.
We used the VISTA Variables en Via Lactea (VVV) survey to search for large proper motion (PM) objects in the zone of avoidance in the Milky Way bulge and southern Galactic disk. This survey is multi-epoch and already spans a period of more than four years, giving us an excellent opportunity for proper motion and parallax studies. We found around 1700 PM objects with PM>30 mas yr(-1). The majority of them are early and mid M-dwarfs. There are also few later spectral type objects, as well as numerous new K- and G-dwarfs. 75 of the stars have PM>300 mas(-1) and 189 stars have PM>200 mas(-1). There are only 42 previously known stars in the VVV area with proper motion PM>200 mas(-1). We also found three dM+WD binaries and new members of the immediate solar vicinity of 25 pc. We generated a catalog which will be a complementary to the existing catalogs outside this zone.
