The results of an analysis of data from the SERP-Е-184 experiment devoted to studying mechanisms of the production of charmed particles in proton–nucleus interactions at 70 GeV and their decays are presented. The data in question were obtained upon irradiating the SVD-2 active target consisting of carbon, silicon, and lead plates with a beam of 70-GeV protons. A detailed simulation on the basis of the FRITIOF7.02 and GEANT3.21 code packages made it possible to optimize event-selection criteria and to calculate the detection efficiency for Λ c + baryons. After selecting a signal from the threebody decay of a Λ c + baryon, the inclusive cross section for its production at near-threshold energies, its lifetime, and the parameter of the A dependence of the cross section were found. The Λ c + -baryon yields are tabulated along with data from other experiments and theoretical predictions.
Описана конструкция калориметра мягких фотонов установки СВД-2. Апертура прибора 210 × 210 мм. Приведены первые результаты его испытания в ходе физического набора статистики в эксперименте E-190 на ускорителе У-70 ИФВЭ.
The design of the soft photon calorimeter for the SVD-2 experiment is described. The aperture of the calorimeter is 210 × 210 mm. The first results of its testing in the course of data acquisition in the E-190 experiment at the U-70 accelerator of the Institute for High Energy Physics are presented.
The stages of development and the current status of the versatile “Spectrometer with a Vertex Detector” setup designed for physics experiments at the U-70 accelerator of the Institute for High Energy Physics (Protvino) is described. The main detectors of the setup are the vertex detector based on silicon microstrip detectors, the wide-aperture magnetic spectrometer based on multiwire proportional chambers, and the lead-glass hodoscope γ detector. In the setup, there is a fast two-level trigger system for selecting required particle interactions. The key characteristics of the setup systems are presented, and the physical results obtained on it are briefly listed.
A measurement of the $ZZ$ production cross section in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$ using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.02\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{fb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC is presented. Twelve events containing two $Z$ boson candidates decaying to electrons and/or muons are observed, with an expected background of $0.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3(\mathrm{stat}{)}_{\ensuremath{-}0.3}^{+0.4}(\mathrm{syst})$ events. The cross section measured in a phase-space region with good detector acceptance and for dilepton masses within the range 66 to 116 GeV is ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{ZZ\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}}^{\mathrm{fid}}={19.4}_{\ensuremath{-}5.2}^{+6.3}(\mathrm{stat}{)}_{\ensuremath{-}0.7}^{+0.9}(\mathrm{syst})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.7(\mathrm{lumi})\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{fb}$. The resulting total cross section for on-shell $ZZ$ production, ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{ZZ}^{\mathrm{tot}}={8.5}_{\ensuremath{-}2.3}^{+2.7}(\mathrm{stat}{)}_{\ensuremath{-}0.3}^{+0.4}(\mathrm{syst})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3(\mathrm{lumi})\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{pb}$, is consistent with the standard model expectation of ${6.5}_{\ensuremath{-}0.2}^{+0.3}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{pb}$ calculated at the next-to-leading order in QCD. Limits on anomalous neutral triple gauge boson couplings are derived.
A search for contact interactions has been performed using dimuon events recorded with the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $42\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. No significant deviation from the standard model is observed in the dimuon mass spectrum, allowing the following 95% C.L. limits to be set on the energy scale of contact interactions: $\ensuremath{\Lambda}>4.9\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$ (4.5 TeV) for constructive (destructive) interference in the left-left isoscalar compositeness model. These limits are the most stringent to date for $\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\mu}qq$ contact interactions.
The Thermalization project is currently under way on the extracted proton beam of the U-70 accelerator at the Institute for High Energy Physics. The main goal of this experiment is to study the collective behavior of secondary particles produced in a multiparticle pp interaction at beam energy E = 50–70 GeV. The region of high charged-particle multiplicities n ch ≥ 10 is investigated. In this region, a significant portion of energy in the center-of-mass system is dissipated on production of secondary particles, which results in formation of a hadronic system. At the initial instant of evolution, the density of this system is high, which may be responsible for the collective behavior of the secondary particles. The investigations are performed at the SVD-2 wide-aperture magnetic spectrometer. A multichannel trigger scintillation hodoscope used to select rare events with a large number of charged particles exceeding the predetermined value is described. The main flow of low-multiplicity events is suppressed by the trigger system by a factor of ∼102.
The ATLAS experiment has measured the production cross-section of events with two isolated photons in the final state, in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. The full data set acquired in 2010 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 37 pb^-1. The background, consisting of hadronic jets and isolated electrons, is estimated with fully data-driven techniques and subtracted. The differential cross-sections, as functions of the di-photon mass, total transverse momentum and azimuthal separation, are presented and compared to the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD.
