The salient features of X-80, a European X-ray Astrophysics Mission, and a candidate for selection as the next satellite in the European Space Agency's scientific programme, is described.

Abstract Results are reported from an all-sky survey carried out at high X-ray energies (13-180 keV) from August 1977 until January 1979 using data obtained with the UCSD/MIT Hard X-Ray and Low-Energy Gamma-Ray Instrument on the HEAO 1 satellite. Visual displays are presented which indicate qualitatively the location, intensities, and time variability of the detected high-energy X-ray sources. A model-dependent procedure for the quantitative analysis of the sky survey data is described. The results of this procedure are presented in tabular form and include fitted count rates in four broad energy bands for about 70 sources. All sources which were detected at a level of statistical significance of not less than about 6 sigma were clearly evident in the visual displays of sky survey data. The survey is therefore complete, except in regions of source confusion, down to an intensity level of about 1/75 of the Crab Nebula in the 13-80 keV band. Forty-four sources were detected in the 40-80 keV energy band, and 14 were detected in the 80-180 keV band. Although most of the detected sources are galactic, seven are extragalactic. On May 8, 1980, we conducted a 90 minute observation on hard X-ray emission (15-200 keV) from Her X-1, using a large area (∼ 1500 cm2), low background balloon borne X-ray telescope. The energy resolution of the telescope was ∼ 17% FWHM at 60 keV. Her X-1 was at binary phase 0.0725 and 2.7 ± 0.5 days after turn on in the 35 day cycle.

Abstract The 1.24-sec pulsations of Her X-1 in the energy range 13-75 keV have been analyzed in data obtained from the UCSD/MIT experiment on HEAO 1 during observations of the source on three dates in February 1978 and three in August 1978. Observational results are (1) the main pulse broadens somewhat with increasing energy; (2) the pulsation light curve undergoes pronounced changes at the leading edge of the main pulse from day to day; (3) spectral hardening within the main pulse is confirmed; (4) a 40-60 keV spectral feature in the spectrum is confirmed; (5) this feature is resolved, the pulse width broadening is greater than 20%, and its centroid varies with pulsation phase; and (6) the 13-75 keV spectrum does not noticeably vary from day to day, except for an overall intensity factor. Some implications of these results for the prevailing models of Her X-1 and the HZ Her-Her X-1 system are briefly discussed. A spectral feature, apparently an absorption line, has been observed at an energy of 20.1 ± 0.5 ke V in the pulsed flux of 3.61 s X-ray pulsar 4U0115 + 63 using the UCSD/MIT instrument on HEAO 1. The line strength, expressed as equivalent width, is 3.1 ± 0.5 ke V. Although essentially unresolved, the feature has a depth more than 60% of the continuum flux. If the feature arises by cyclotron resonance absorption near the magnetic poles of the neutron star, it implies a magnetic field of between ≈1.8 and ≈2.5 × 1012 G depending on the gravitational redshift (≲5–40%).
THE first detection of high-energy (13–120 keV) X rays from the vicinity of the quasar 3C273 is reported here. This object is one of three quasars associated with X-ray sources1–3. Low energy (2–10 keV) X rays3–5 and γ rays (50–500 MeV)6 have been previously observed.
