Purpose: The structural and compositional similarities between dentin and alveolar bone form the basis for utilizing dentin for bone regeneration. Various authors have recommended using treated mineralized, partially demineralized, or demineralized dentin grafts instead of xenografts because of their comparable clinical and radiographic results and lower costs. The current study therefore compared the effect of untreated mineralized dentin grafts (UMDGs) versus xenografts in vertical and horizontal augmentation around dental implants that were immediately placed in the mandibular anterior region. Materials and Methods: A total of 56 patients who required immediate dental implant placement in the mandibular anterior region were randomly allocated to group I (study), where ground dentin was washed with normal saline and placed around the dental implants, or group II (control), where a xenograft was used. The primary implant stability was measured at the time of implant placement. Secondary implant stability, plaque index (PI), bleeding index (BI), probing depth (PD), and keratinized mucosa width (KMW) were assessed at baseline (time of definitive abutment and provisional crown placement) and then at 3, 6, and 12 months. Pain and the number of analgesics consumed were assessed daily during the first postoperative week. Marginal bone loss (MBL) and radiodensity were assessed radiographically. Results: There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of postoperative pain, the number of analgesic tablets consumed, peri-implant mucositis, or peri-implantitis. Both groups showed comparable results for the PI, BI, and PD. Moreover, there was no statistical difference between the groups with regard to primary implant stability and secondary implant stability at baseline and 12 months. Group I showed significantly lower secondary implant stability after loading at 3 and 6 months and significantly greater bone loss and lower bone density before exposure. KMW and MBL after exposure were significantly higher in group I at all time points. Conclusions: Although UMDGs showed similar clinical results to xenografts, including primary and secondary implant stability, they had higher resorption rates than xenografts. Therefore, treatment of the dentin graft is required. Thus, the authors do not recommend using UMDGs.
Heavy metals are considered the most common pollutants in industrial wastewater areas. Out of thirty bacterial isolates, only 3 isolates sighted the highest metal resistance activity for Zn+2, Fe+2, Pb+2, Co+2, Mn+2, Ni+2, and Cd+2. The biochemical and DNA homology identification with similarities 99.58%, 99.79%, and 99.86% of those isolates was identified and deposited in WDCM, respectively, as Enterobacter kobei OM144907 SCUF0000311, Enterobacter cloacae OM180597 SCUF0000312, and Enterobacter hormaechei OM181067 SCUF0000313. The minimum tolerance activity (MIC) of heavy metal concentrations against E. kobei and E. cloacae was 25, 15, and 15 mmol/l for Ni+2, Fe+2, and Mn+2, respectively, and 10 mmol/l for Zn+2, Pb+2, Co+2, and Cd+2, while against E. hormaechei, it is 15 mmol/l for Ni+2, Fe+2, and Mn+2 and 10 mmol/l for Zn+2, Pb+2, Co+2, and Cd+2. The consortium and solitary application of bacterial isolates towards heavy metal removal at 100%, 200%, and 300% industrial wastewater concentrations were conducted and showed that more than 90% removal of Zn+2, Fe+2, Pb+2, Mn+2, Ni+2, and Cd+2 from a non-concentrated polluted sample (100%) was reported by the three strains. With doubling the polluted sample concentration (200%), the highest removal efficiency for Zn+2, Pb+2, Mn+2, Ni+2, and Cd+2 was reported by E. cloacae as 70. 75, 66, 65, and 57%, respectively. Removal efficiency after increasing the polluted sample concentration to 300% showed that E. cloacae removed above 45% of all tested heavy metals except Pb+2. Ultimately, E. cloacae exposed the highest efficiency with recommendations for heavy metals removal under higher concentrations.
Cobalt doped modified borophosphate glasses similar to Hench’s bioglass were successfully synthesized using gradually increasing cobalt ions in addition to another sample of Co free glass. Synthesized samples were studied for their bioactivity through immersion in phosphate solution for different time intervals. FTIR absorption spectral data were collected before and after immersion for a prolonged time intervals. Spectral data reveals appearance of absorption band at 573 cm-1 Splitted into 565 cm-1 and 603 cm-1 after one week of immersion supporting the bone bonding ability and biocompatibility with bone. The change in the calculated N4 value also indi-cate the conversion of both BO3 and BO4 strutural units associated with the formation of hydroxyapatite. Magnetic characteristics meas-ured and calculated through VSM measurements supporting the idea of using such material as a bioactive material that can be used in hyperthermia treatment. Â
AIM OF THE STUDY:We aimed to compare the management of pediatric benign ovarian tumors between an English center and three Egyptian institutions.MATERIALS AND METHODS:This was a retrospective review of all children presenting with benign ovarian tumors between January 2014 and January 2019. A standardized dataset was used to compare between both sides.RESULTS:Eighty-nine patients were included (54 English and 35 Egyptians). Median age at diagnosis in England was 13 years (2-16y), while in Egypt it was 7 years (9m-16y) with P =0.001. Mature teratomas or dermoid cysts were the most common findings in England and Egypt; 75.9% and 82.8% of cases, respectively. The presentation with an acute abdomen represented 27.8% of English and 28.6% of Egyptian patients. Incidentally diagnosed lesions constituted 15% of English patients, whereas none of the Egyptian cases were discovered incidentally. There were variations in diagnostic imaging; England: Ultrasound (USS) (54), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (37), and computed tomography (CT) (only one)-Egypt: USS (35), CT (17), and MRI (only one). Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) was performed in 15% of English and 23% of Egyptian patients (P = 0.334). Ovarian-sparing surgery (OSS) was performed in: England 35%, Egypt 37%; P = 0.851. OSS was performed using MIS in 87.5% (7/8) of English patients and 100% (8/8) of Egyptians. Patients presented as emergencies generally had open oophorectomies: England; 86.7% open and 80% oophorectomy-Egypt; 100% open and 90% oophorectomy. Recurrences or metachronous disease occurred in 5.6% of English and 5.7% of Egyptian patients.CONCLUSIONS:There were no significant differences regarding surgical management, tumor pathology, and recurrence or metachronous disease. However, age, incidental diagnosis, and imaging modalities showed notable differences. MIS was correlated with ovarian preservation, whereas emergency surgery generally resulted in open oophorectomy.
The bulk sediment samples and the finest sediment group (FSG) including (Ø3, Ø4 and <Ø4) were used to estimate the leachable forms of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, Co and Cd at Port Tawfiq and Tersana harbours in the Suez Bay at the northern tip of Suez Gulf using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS).FSG was representing the essential constituents of the seafloor sediments with averages of 71.68% from the total sediments at Port Tawfiq Harbour and 69.47% at Tersana Harbour indicating the deposition under calm conditions.Leachable Fe was the metal carrier for the different heavy metals, the average leachable forms of Fe, Mn and Pb in FSG (53382.81,60048.81µg/g), (625.68,662.54 µg/g) and (55.191, 67.23 µg/g) about two folds in the bulk sediment (26397.11,27761.07µg/g), (219.05,224.22 µg/g) and (26.62, 30.47 µg/g) at both Port Tawfiq and Tersana harours respectively.Zn in FSG (594.40 µg/g) about two folds in the bulk sediments (236.34 µg/g) at Port Tawfiq Harbour, meanwhile at Tersana Harbour Zn in FSG (968.58 µg/g) about four folds in the bulk sediments (265.25 µg/g) respectively.The average leachable of Cu at Port Tawfiq Harbour in FSG (303.50 µg/g) recorded about three folds in the bulk sediments (98.01 µg/g), while at Tersana Harbour (1020.33 µg/g) recorded about five folds in the bulk sediments (98.01 µg/g).At Port Tawfiq Harbour in the FSG, the average leachable Ni (211.47 µg/g) exceeds more than four folds in the bulk sediments (50.13), meanwhile at Tersana Harbour in FSG (507.75 µg/g) about eight folds in the bulk sediments (62.08 µg/g).In the same Manner, the averages of leachable Co in FSG were about one time and half in the bulk sediments at the two studied harbours.
Bone resorption is a chronic, progressive disease and irreversible process that occurs in all patients and can be classified into six different types. There are some of etiological factors that may cause resorbed ridge such as anatomical, prosthodontics, metabolic and systemic factors. The present article, were reviewed the literature concerning on possible mechanism, diagnosis, etiological factors and how to manage and prevent of resorbed ridge for edentulous patients
Aim of the study: To investigate the current management of ovarian tumors in children by the Egyptian pediatric surgical association (EPSA) consultants who are dealing with approximately 80% of these cases in our country. Methods: Following approval of EPSA executive board, an online questionnaire was sent via e-mails on EPSA online group mail to all registered consultants. Repeated reminders were sent biweekly for 6 weeks. Results: Responses were received from 82 consultants (response rate 82/111, 73.87%). Diagnosis: 74.39% of respondents indicated abdomino-pelvic mass as most common presenting symptom. Concerning imaging requested, US and CT were reported by 60.98%. AFP and HCG were requested by 84.15% as serum tumor markers. Surgery: Approximately 50% of respondents perform 1-3 cases per year. Diagnostic laparoscopy was done by 70.73%. Transverse abdominal incision was the commonest in use during surgeries (81.71%). Out of all respondents, 65.85% never encountered intraoperative complications, whereas the remaining 34.15% had different complications (mainly rupture and spillage). Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) was adopted by 53.66% in only benign looking tumors. A total of 69.51% perform ovarian sparing surgery (OSS) in benign masses whenever possible. Follow up: Benign tumors were the most common type observed by 86.59% of respondents. In benign lesions, 28.05% of surgeons never ask for follow up and the remaining 71.95% follow patients with different schedules. Conclusions: There is a paradigm shift toward MIS and OSS in the current practice of EPSA consultants. No actual standard protocol of management is present for ovarian tumors in Egypt and they still fall at the edge between many subspecialties. The results of this survey urge for establishment of uniform guidelines with international reference to be adopted in our nation, in addition to start a national prospective registration system for these tumors which is currently lacking in Egypt.
The current study was carried out at the Department of Genetics, Faculty of Agriculture, Tanta University, Egypt. The Experiment was carried out at a private farm, Kafr El-Sheikh, Egypt, during 2010 and 2015 seasons which including producing somaclones, greenhouse evaluation and field experiment evaluation. Field evaluation experiment was conducted during 2015 season. Four tomato varieties, Super StrainB , Castle Rock, AdvantageII, and Edkawy were used in this study. Ten somaclones has been driven from each variety. Yield and yield components, quality and some physiological characteristics were evaluated for all tomato genotypes . The results showed highly significant differences among somaclones and their original cultivar in all studied traits. Generally, SE10 somaclone driven from Edkawy gave the highest values of plant height, number of leaves and number of clusters, while the highest values of number of branches /plant were produced by SE1 driven from the same variety. The highest values of number of fruit/plant and total yield /plant as well as fruit firmness and fruit weight were recorded by SA6 driven from Advantage II variety. The highest values of chlorophyll content was produced by SS5 driven from Super StrainB. Somaclone SA2 driven from Advantage II variety had the largest size. Somaclone SC7 driven from Castle Rock showed the highest mean of TSS%.
Eleven random primers were used to study somaclonal variation among sixteen somaclones derived from four parental genotypes (Super Strain B, Castle Rock, Advanttage II and Edkawy). Out of eleven random primers used, only six primers (OPA01, OPA02, OPA03, OPA04, OPA05 and OPB11) successfully produced scoreable RAPD bands for all the tested genotypes. DNA amplification with the six different primers generated 285 bands 130 of them were polymorphic and 155 monomorphic bands in all the genotypes studied. Among the primers used, OPA05 produced the highest number of bands (16 bands) while primers OPA04 produced the lowest number (12 bands). RAPD patterns generated by these primers achieved high polymorphic percentage, indicating high level of genetic variations among somaclones and their parental genotypes. Super Strain B cultivar showed the highest number of polymorphic percentage 54.8%, while Advanttage II and Edkawy cultivars showed the lowest percentage of somaclonal variations 42.3% and 42.2%, respectively. The relatively high frequency of variations detected here might bias stable plant propagation. However it could be regarded as a novel source of tomato improvement.
This study aims to investigate the management of Wilms tumor by the Egyptian pediatric surgical association (EPSA) consultants. After approval of the EPSA executive board, a questionnaire was distributed individually to all consultants attending the general assembly of EPSA 2017 annual congress. Of 88 consultants, responses were received from 61. Palpable abdominal mass was indicated by 72.13% of respondents as the commonest presenting symptom. Concerning the imaging requested, computed tomography was reported by 80.33%. Approximately 62.30% of respondents perform 1 to 3 cases annually. Regarding timing of surgery, upfront resection was the most frequently reported by 62.30%. A total of 77.05% perform lymph node sampling during surgeries. Nephron-sparing surgery was adopted by only 26.23%, whereas none of the respondents reported the use of minimally invasive surgery for management. Overall, 93.44% of surgeons ask for a visit every 3 months in the first year postoperatively. Upfront nephrectomy is the commonest procedure for Wilms tumor in the current practice of EPSA consultants, whereas there is consensus against minimally invasive surgery. Surgical guidelines for nephron-sparing surgery are still incomplete and need to be tabulated. This study urges for a nationwide retrospective analysis to establish a uniform protocol with international reference to be adopted in Egypt.
