There are a group of patients who present themselves for the treatment of depression and/or anxiety, with or without panic attacks, who have psychophysiological diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome, recurrent urinary track infections, cardiac dysrhythmias, allergies, or asthma. These patients also have an almost pan-drug intolerance. The psychiatric and medical literature is becoming replete with combinations and permutations of various affective, psychophysiological and medical disorders. It seems that we are dealing with diverse manifestations of the same disease. Among my patients are a number with the DSM 111 diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder. All function well cognitively, some have difficulty in object relationships. The major difficulty for each was affective dyscontrol. All had psychophysiological diseases and/or medical disease as well as drug intolerance. There is both a psychoanalytic model and a biomolecular model that help to explain the interrelationship between anxiety and somatic disease.
