The n-alkylammonium halides which have thermal transitions above room temperature adopt either a monoclinic or an orthorhombic form when recrystallized at temperatures below the lowest transition. On heating a transition to a tetragonal structure occurs but on subsequent cooling the crystals do not return to their original form but to a different monoclinic structure.

Long chain secondary ammonium chlorides, bromides and iodides crystallize in a preferred orientation. Values of the basal spacings of the salts indicate hydrocarbon chains oriented towards each other between planes of the ionic heads. The inclination angle of the chains was found to be 40°.
The extraction equilibria in the system aqueous hydrochloric acid – uranyl chloride –undiluted tri-n-butoxyethyl phosphate, TBEP, were examined as a function of increasing uranyl concentration (0.44 to 4.41 M) in the initial aqueous solution, the acid content of the initial aqueous solution being kept constant at 6.76 M. The extraction behavior of TBEP is found to be different from that of tributyl phosphate. Evidence has been presented to show that the three ethereal oxygen atoms in the TBEP molecule are, under high organic phase loading conditions, available for participation in complexation. The hydrochloric acid promoted hydrolysis of TBEP and the instability toward light of the TBEP layer containing hydrochloric acid and uranium were also examined.

Evidence, based on physical–chemical measurements of the organic layers, has been presented to show that tributyl phosphate extracts hydrobromic acid as its disolvate in medium acid concentrations, and probably as monosolvate in high concentrations. The determination of water in the tributyl phosphate phases indicates that at low and medium acid concentrations the acid is extracted as its tetrahydrate, and at high concentrations as an unhydrated species. From these results, the formation of [(TBP)2.HBr.(H2O)6] and [TBP.HBr. (H2O)3] could be deduced.
